2003 PTF Mock Draft
This mock is a little bit of what I would do, a little bit of what I think the team should do and a little bit of I have no clue. I am not quite sure I buy the massive run on QB’s at the top of the draft, but we will certainly find out very soon.
Pick 1.1: Cincinnati Bengals
QB Carson Palmer
6’5” / 235lbs / 55 AWR / 95 THP / 86 THA
Analysis: Palmer is certainly the protypical NFL QB with great size and a strong arm. The growing pains may exist early in the career, but that is a certainty with almost any young QB. From the Bengals perspective, as tempting as a player like Anquan Boldin could be, I think you go with the top QB in the draft and if all goes well you are not picking near the top of the draft again any time soon.
Pick 1.2: Detroit Lions
WR Anquan Boldin
6’1” / 220lbs / 95 SPD / 98 AGI / 98 ACC
Analysis: There are a number of really talented players in this draft at their respective positions, but Anquan Boldin may be the best overall player in the draft. He has good size, is super athletic and is ready to play right away. Immediately at 1.2, I think you will see if the run on QBs is legit. I am not convinced that any of the QBs available are significantly better than Harrington is at this stage. I think starting to build around the QB is a good first step and then if Harrington isn’t the guy, you will have your pick of the crop of QBs in the next couple of years.
Pick 1.3: Pittsburgh Steelers
QB Brooks Bollinger
6’1” / 205lbs / 54 AWR / 96 THP / 90 THA
Analysis: Pittsburgh made a decisive move to the 3rd overall pick in the draft. There are plenty of players worthy of this selection, but I think a move up like this has to be for a QB if you don’t currently have a franchise QB rostered. I inserted Bollinger here, but it could really be your pick of any of the top bunch. I imagine everyone at the top of the draft will have these top QBs in for private workouts and that will likely determine who they select. Without that additional data, I like Bollinger’s arm talent next best.
Pick 1.4: Chicago Bears
QB Rex Grossman
6’1” / 225lbs / 60 AWR / 89 THP / 86 THA
Analysis: The Bears can really do any number of things here, but with no actual QB currently rostered, the thought is that the Bears will be taking one pretty high in the draft. Again, I have them going with Grossman as I think he is ready to step in and contribute at a decently high level from the get go, but private workouts will likely determine the actual selection.
Pick 1.5: Dallas Cowboys
WR Andre Johnson
6’3” / 229lbs / 89 SPD / 99 AGI / 92 ACC
Analysis: This pick is the first wild card of the draft for me. The pick could very easily be another QB but I have the Cowboys going with the 2nd WR off the board in Andre Johnson. Big strong, and a good athlete, he is ready to step in on day 1 and be a top WR. If WR isn’t the choice here, there are any number of really strong players that Dallas could select at a number of positions of need including Terrance Newman or offensive lineman like Kris Dielman or Jordan Gross.
Pick 1.6: Arizona Cardinals
CB Terrance Newman
5’10” / 197lbs / 97 SPD / 92 AGI / 97 ACC
Analysis: Next up, I have the Cardinals taking Terrance Newman. A super athletic player out of Kansas State, Newman is a day one starter for almost any team. I think the Cardinals could also have there eye on Troy Polamalu here, but Newman is a stronger player in a number of areas pending what the team might see in a private workout. This is the part of the draft where I start to have no clue of what’s going to happen. Actually, who are we kidding, I’ve had no clue from the jump.
Pick 1.7: Houston Texans
OL Kris Dielman
6’4” / 320lbs / 74 SPD / 90 STR / 69 ACC / 96 PBK / 90 RBK
Analysis: The Texans could plug a few holes here. One thing I don’t see them doing is going QB. David Carr is in a position where he can still reach his full potential, I think the team should do their best to build around him first before rushing to judgement. What better way to build around Carr than to select the best offensive lineman in the draft. In my opinion, Dielman tops this the list of lineman but there are a number of strong ones in this draft. My assumption is that the Texans may take Dielman here and kick him out to LT and be a starter there for 10 years.
Pick 1.8: Jacksonville Jaguars
ROLB EJ Henderson
6’1” / 245lbs / 94 SPD / 80 STR / 96 ACC
Analysis:Pound for pound, Henderson is one of the most talented players in this draft. He doesn’t currently play a premium position, but that’s not to say you can’t move him to one. He is a little bit undersized to play DE (although size may not matter), or with his athleticism you could even debate moving him to the secondary. Either way, Henderson is a freak of nature that you run to the podium and select and then figure out where he can best help you after that.
Pick 1.9: Carolina Panthers
QB Chris Simms
6’4” / 230lbs / 56 AWR / 86 THP / 94 THA
Analysis:The GM-less Panthers are in a unique spot. They have a lot of holes to fill, but to me it makes sense to go after the QB of the future here. After the early run on QBs in the top 4, Simms becomes the 4th QB taken here at 9. Simms is pretty ready to compete right away, although there may be some bumps in the road. I think the Panthers can afford to let him go through the growing pains and in a year or two will look a lot better off for it.
Pick 1.10: Baltimore Ravens
LT Jordan Gross
6’4” / 305lbs / 59 SPD / 92 STR / 76 ACC / 82 PBK / 94 RBK
Analysis: The Ravens have a very strong roster across the board and are in a win now mode. Jonathan Ogden is still a stud at LT, but will start regressing next year. Gross gives the Ravens a solid bookend that could eventually take over for Ogden in a few years but in the meantime they will form a solid pair. Depending on how the board falls in front of them, I could see the Ravens considering a QB here.
Pick 1.11: Seattle Seahawks
RT Marcus Ogden
6’6” / 312lbs / 68 SPD / 92 STR / 83 ACC / 89 PBK / 72 RBK
Analysis: Back to back Tackles going off the board here. Ogden is a super athletic but a little bit raw prospect who will be a stud in a few years. He needs a little work on his technique in the run game. The Seahawks have some pretty glaring holes on the offensive line and with Matt Hasselback and Shaun Alexander are ready to win now. This is a strong pick that will help them in accomplishing those goals.
Pick 1.12: St Louis Rams
MLB Cie Grant
6’0” / 235lbs / 90 SPD / 84 STR / 85 ACC
Analysis: The Rams offense is loaded but there is some work to do on defense. They could probably go a few different ways here, but I have them selecting a freak athlete at the linebacker position. Slightly undersized, Grant is explosive and can fly to the ball. He can help cover up some of the holes that currently exist at the second level of their defense.
Pick 1.13: Tennessee Titans
RT Makoa Frietas
6’4” / 300lbs / 67 SPD / 92 STR / 68 ACC / 83 PBK / 84 RBK
Analysis: The Titans came way up the board here in a trade with the Redskins. What exactly they are after, I am not sure. They have a win now team with a big hole at the offensive tackle spot. If I were in charge, that would probably be the target of this pick. The hope is probably that one of the top OT fall here, but in this mock there was a run right before this pick. With that said, we still have them taking Makoa Frietas who is a solid player with good size and polish. When the draft starts moving tonight, the Titans could very well end up with a player like Jordan Gross or Marcus Ogden here which I think they would be thrilled with.
Pick 1.14: Miami Dolphins
SS Ken Hamlin
6’2” / 208lbs / 88 SPD / 94 AGI / 95 ACC
Analysis: The first of three 1st round picks for the Miami Dolphins. I think there objective could be to just go BPA here. Looking at who is on the board, Ken Hamlin is a really strong pick here. He has great size and athleticism for a safety and depending on how he works out, could even get a look at CB. I think this would be a very solid pick for Miami who is just looking to add talent.
Pick 1.15: Minnesota Vikings
CB Charles Tillman
6’2” / 210lbs / 98 SPD / 85 AGI / 89 ACC
Analysis: The Vikings moved down in a trade with Pittsburgh. There is no doubt that they will be able to score points in bunches this year, but they could use some help on defense in order stop the other team from doing so. Tillman is a tall, uber fast CB from Louisiana. Depending on how he skews, he could be a real good find at this point in the draft. He is a day one starter for a team that could use some help on the backend.
Pick 1.16: Kansas City Chiefs
DT William Joseph
6’5” / 310lbs / 72 SPD / 92 STR / 70 ACC
Analysis: The Chiefs can use some help along both the offensive and defensive line. As the board fell, I think Joseph would be a really strong pick here. He is a DT with good size and movement abilities. I think he is someone that can slot right in as a starter and make the Chiefs DL a whole lot better quickly.
Pick 1.17: New Orleans Saints
WR Kassim Osgood
6’5” / 220lbs / 86 SPD / 87 AGI / 92 ACC
Analysis: The Saints surprisingly let Joe Horn go to Free Agency without a contract offer which leaves a bit of a hole at WR alongside Donte Stallworth. What better way to fill a hole then with a 6’5” 220lbs Kassim Osgood. With a strong private workout and some extra work in training camp, Osgood can be a really formidable player really quickly into his career, and someone who has star potential down the line.
Pick 1.18: Miami Dolphins
LT Jon Stinchcomb
6’5” / 315lbs / 64 SPD / 87 STR / 78 ACC
Analysis: The second pick for the Dolphins adds a strong player on the offensive line where the team has a few holes. Stinchcomb with a little work, can be a 10 year starter on the left side or really anywhere along the OL. He is a good player to add to the fold for any team.
Pick 1.19: New England Patriots
HB Larry Johnson
6’1” / 235lbs / 89 SPD / 85 STR / 96 ACC
Analysis: This is my pick, there are a few areas of need that I have but in all likelihood will probably go BPA. Johnson is a player that I was hoping to slot higher in the mock because he is a really good player but was having trouble finding a fit. If he is here at 1.19, he could be a strong contender for the pick, depending on how the rest of the board falls.
Pick 1.20: Denver Broncos
CB Dennis Weathersby
6’1” / 204lbs / 94 SPD / 99 AGI / 98 ACC
Analysis: Weathersby is a bit raw, but has fantastic size and athleticism. He is the type of the player that you take a chance on and develop over time. The Broncos are in a bit of a rebuild, and have time on their side to let him take his lumps and develop. In a few years, he could easily be one of the top CB in the league.
Pick 1.21: Cleveland Browns
HB Willis McGahee
6’0” / 235lbs / 86 SPD / 87 STR / 96 ACC
Analysis: I am not too sure where I see the Browns going with this pick, but I think adding a great player like McGahee is not a bad option. A super well built, strong RB, McGahee will have a long productive career in the league and is someone you can build an offense around while you develop a young QB.
Pick 1.22: New York Jets
DT Anthony Adams
6’0” / 310lbs / 79 SPD / 94 STR / 72 ACC
Analysis: One area of potential need I saw for the Jets was at DT and I was trying to find a good landing spot for Anthony Adams so this was a good match. Adams is strong and can move. He’s a little bit undersized but I don’t think that will hold him back too much. Pairing him with John Abraham, Bryan Thomas and Shaun Ellis should form a pretty strong DL that will attempt to give Tom Brady and the rest of the division fits.
Pick 1.23: New England Patriots
SS Hanik Milligan
6’3” / 200lbs / 87 SPD / 94 AGI / 93 ACC
Analysis: Again, not entirely sure where I plan to go with this pick but Milligan is a pretty strong player. He is someone that if he tests will in private workouts could go quite a bit higher than this, but even at face value he is going to be a really solid contributor in the secondary for someone. The Patriots could use some help in that area, so adding Milligan would be a welcome sight.
Pick 1.24: Denver Broncos
MLB Antwan Peek
6’3” / 255lbs / 87 SPD / 78 STR / 82 ACC
Analysis:The Broncos are back on the clock and take another super athlete that with some work will be a star at linebacker. Peek has good size and all the makings of someone who will have a good, long and productive career. This would be a home run pick.
Pick 1.25: New York Giants
WR Brandon Lloyd
6’0” / 200lbs / 93 SPD / 80 AGI / 95 ACC
Analysis: The Giants are in a full rebuild mode, so they can go a few different directions here. I opted for Lloyd is an athletic receiver with good size to start to rebuild the receive corps that saw Amani Toomer get traded away earlier this offseason. The Giants could also be an option for a QB here depending on how the board falls and who is available to them.
Pick 1.26: San Francisco 49ers
RE DeWayne White
6’2” / 273lbs / 84 SPD / 79 STR / 86 ACC
Analysis:At 26 I have the 9ers taking the first defensive end of the draft in DeWayne White. He will step right in to start at RE from day one and pair nicely with Andre Carter on the opposite side. The 9ers have a good all around roster, so filling a couple of the holes that remain should be the priority here for a team that is ready to win now.
Pick 1.27: Washington Redskins
C Bruce Nelson
6’5” / 301lbs / 54 SPD / 97 STR / 76 ACC
Analysis: The Redskins made a big move down the board with the Titans nabbing back to back picks here at the end of the 1st round. Nelson is a big strong center who can start from day one. He will pair nicely next to the newly acquired Brian Water who the Redskins signed in Free Agency. The Redskins will be in a unique spot here at the end of the 1st where if the board falls positively can go BPA with back to back picks and do some real damage.
Pick 1.28: Washington Redskins
SS Yeremiah Bell
6’0” / 205lbs / 87 SPD / 99 AGI / 94 ACC
Analysis: Bell is a really solid safety that similar to a few other safeties in this class could move to CB depending on how they test out. Either way, Bell is a ready made starter in the secondary who can step in at either of the safety spots. Pairing Bell up with Champ Bailey and Fred Smoot should give the Redskins a young, capable secondary for years to come.
Pick 1.29: Miami Dolphins
MLB Kawika Mitchell
6’1” / 253lbs / 84 SPD / 76 STR / 81 ACC
Analysis: With the 3rd and final 1st round pick, the Dolphins add a really solid player at MLB in Mitchell. Mitchell doesn’t flash in any one area but is strong across the board and should be able to step in as a day one starter for the Dolphins. If the Dolphins are able to draft Hamlin, Stinchcomb and Mitchell, I think that would be a pretty successful day one of the draft.
Pick 1.30: Dallas Cowboys
QB Tony Romo
6’2” / 230lbs / 55 AWR / 95 THP / 76 THA
Analysis: Another 1st rounder for the Cowboys here and while they didn’t jump at a QB with the 5th pick, instead opting for Andre Johnson, they decide to take the leap here with old/new friend Tony Romo. Romo is a strong armed QB with decent size. He may take some development but has a lot of potential and it will help to have Johnson along with veteran Joey Galloway to throw too.
Pick 1.31: New York Giants
MLB Solomon Bates
6’1” / 243lbs / 91 SPD / 69 STR / 83 ACC
Analysis: The Giants have another pick here at the end of round 1 to continue with their rebuild. Bates is an uber athletic player who can probably play any of the linebacker spots. This pick is one you make and bet on the development of the player. Bates is a bit raw, but with the right work in training camp, he could be a force in a few years.
Pick 1.32: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
C Ryan Pontbriand
6’2” / 255lbs / 72 SPD / 99 STR / 64 ACC / 87 PBK / 94 RBK
Analysis: I really wanted to find a way to get Pontbriand in the 1st round and so here it is. This will be a good measuring stick for the debate on if weight matters. Pontbriand is a solid player in every regard but is a bit undersized. If someone is willing to take a chance on him, it could pay off handsomely down the line.
