Uncapped Potential: GM Fenger’s Favorite Free Agent Signings
By Peter Fenger

Free agency can be a gamble. Players are older, contracts are shorter, and regression is just around the corner. But the teams that play the market well can patch major holes, find leadership, and even stumble into franchise cornerstones. This offseason delivered all of the above.

While some signings were one-year stopgaps and others long-term foundational moves, several front offices struck gold. I’ve combed through the numbers and targeted the best of the bunch — with a spotlight on players who hit 88+ OVR and made an immediate impact on their new homes.

Notable Veteran Signings
Cowboys sign LG Ruben Brown from the Bills
At 31 years old, Brown still has plenty of tread left. His 91 pass block and 92 run block ratings speak for themselves. He’ll anchor the Cowboys’ shifting offensive line, even if only for a one-year deal. Strong awareness and solid strength make him a reliable option in the trenches.

Saints bring back LG Steve Wisniewski
After taking 2002 off, the 36-year-old vet returns to the league with the Saints. He brings elite blocking IQ with 93 pass block and 93 run block. While his strength and burst have declined, he’ll hold his own on the line. He’s a clear rental, but one with immediate value.

Cardinals land DT Ted Washington from the Bears
This 35-year-old is a massive force at nose tackle. With 95 strength and 84 tackle, Ted plugs the middle like few others in the league. His 71 acceleration is enough to buy him one more year of high-level play before age really kicks in. Arizona signed him for two, hoping he can hold the line just a little longer.

Bengals pick up DT Dana Stubblefield from the 49ers
At 33, Stubblefield is past his peak but still offers high-level play for a team in transition. He brings 90 awareness and 88 strength, offering leadership and production on a one-year deal. The Bengals are clearly giving rookie QB Carson Palmer a defense that can hold the line while the offense develops.

Commandos add K Martin Gramatica from the Buccaneers
Another member of the 90+ kicker club, Gramatica brings 92 kick power and 92 accuracy. At just 28 years old, he has a three-year window to deliver consistent points. My only nitpick is that he wasn’t signed longer. Still, Washington upgraded their special teams significantly.

Favorite Free Agent Moves
Chargers sign CB Aeneas Williams from the Rams
Yes, he’s 35. Yes, it’s a one-year deal. But Williams still boasts 95 awareness, 90 acceleration, and 89 speed. He’s got ball skills (75 catch) and instincts that make up for any loss in step. In a division with fast receivers, the Chargers just bought themselves a year of elite coverage and veteran presence in the secondary.

Raiders ink ROLB Junior Seau from the Chargers
This one could be a game-changer. At 34, Seau is aging, but with 97 tackle, 96 awareness, and 83 acceleration, he’s still dominant. Add in 82 speed and 81 strength, and you’ve got one of the few linebackers who can control the edge and call the defense. This is the definition of high-impact short-term value.

The Best Free Agent Signings of the Offseason
Broncos strike gold with K Jeff Reed and P Shane Lechler
Denver made the kind of moves that sets themselves up for a strong future.

Jeff Reed, just 24, comes in with 90 kick power and 89 accuracy and signs a five-year deal. That’s elite value and elite foresight.

Shane Lechler, at 27, brings a booming leg (96 kick power) and a reliable foot on kickoffs and punts. He also inked a five-year contract, locking in elite special teams talent for the foreseeable future.

These weren’t just “fill the roster” moves. They were long-term investments in field position and consistency. With a young offense still finding its identity, these two will get plenty of chances to make an impact every Sunday. Combined with Denver’s strong draft, this free agent class signals a franchise on the rise.

Final Thoughts
From aging legends to under-the-radar specialists, teams across the PTL made savvy moves to improve immediately or set the table for the future. These signings stood out to me based on performance, positional need, and long-term value. Other teams made smart moves too, but when it comes to maximizing impact from the free agent market, these were the best of the bunch.
