Commissioner's Mock Draft
PICKTEAMPLAYERANALYSIS
1.01
QB Eli ManningHe's the most ready to play right now (but not my favorite signal caller in the draft). Breck likes to draft for a bit of a meme, however, and I think the idea of him forcing Manning to play for the Chargers will be too much to pass up.
1.02
QB Philip RiversI'd be an idiot to trade up (giving up my future first) and not taking the franchise signal caller. Vilma has to be considered, but Rivers is the future of the Cardinals and I'm happy to select him here.
1.03
FS Sean TaylorI do think the Lions want a quarterback, but it just doesn't fall their way this year. They suffer another season with Harrington and bring in Sean Taylor to be the stud enforcer on their defense. He's an immediate pro bowler.
1.04
MLB Jonathan VilmaNo surprise here, but the Texans grab the last of the "big 4" players in this draft. Vilma will transform their defense and wreak havoc on opponents for seasons to come. Not a bad price to pay for moving down.
1.05
WR Larry FitzgeraldEveryone has the Browns selected a wide receiver and I think they are spot on. Fitzgerald is a stud who will make a difference in the league. The Browns go BPA at this juncture.
1.06
OG Sean LocklearNew York obviously believes that Romo is "the guy." We'll see how that turns out. However, if he's going to succeed, they need to protect him. Locklear is a very polarizing candidate, but I think he can be a fantastic interior offensive linemen in this league.
1.07
WR Roy WilliamsThis is, of course, presuming a skew up. Ernest Wilford would be the pick, if not for his significant injury concerns. The Bengals instead draft the safer option who is only an inch shorter. Besides, one inch never makes a difference, right?
1.08
WR Ernest WilfordYou know who I think does take a gamble on Wilford? That would be GM Anthony Fernandez. He wants to win and win now. He'll take the gamble on the injury prone wonder in the hopes that he can deliver consistent downfield touchdowns without getting tackled.
1.09
WR Bernard BerrianI do think we will have the "wide receiver run" this year, with Berrian being the last off the board. He's a fast, immediate threat for the Panthers who surprised a lot of people last season. He adds another dynamic to their roster.
1.10
OT Tyson ClaboI'm calling bull of Dolphins brass right now. If they're not drafting an offensive tackle, they are making the wrong decision. If Clabo falls into their lab at 1.10, they need to draft him immediately. He'll be a difference maker for their franchise long term.
1.11
WR Reggie WilliamsOkay, one more wide receiving. Reggie Williams is a great option for a Steelers team that went and got their quarterback last season. He's tall, physical and should be a good long-term option for their team.
1.12
OT Max StarksThe Buccaneers team is aging faster than anyone expected. Starks is a good value pick for them in building up their roster to make sure they are ready to compete when they get their next great signal caller.
1.13
OG Scott WellsThe goal for the Chiefs has to be protecting Byron Leftwich, who proved himself quite capable last year. With Locklear off the board, Wells is likely the best interior OL at this juncture and worth the selection.
1.14
WR Michael ClaytonI was really tempted to take a cornerback here, but Clayton may be too tempting for someone who likes tall receivers. There are some good athletes in this class and he should be a starter on day one in the Big Apple.
1.15
HB Michael TurnerI'm still surprised the Cowboys traded out of the "Sean Taylor Sweepstakes", but getting Drew Brees is well worth the cause. Turner looks like he could be a stud running back, despite his STR being god awful low. I do think he's the pick for America's Team, however.
1.16
CB DeAngelo HallThis is the right move for Houston. Avoid one of the flashy quarterbacks and ensure that you have a stellar defense. Drafting Vilma and DeAngelo Hall is a huge power move for the franchise and signals what the future will be. Tough, gridnose football.
1.17
DT Vince WilforkThe stud is a massive force on the inside of the defensive line. Chicago may look for a quarterback, but Wilford seems like the type of player that could play for the Bears for 15 seasons and retire as the career record holder of DT sacks.
1.18
QB Cody PickettThis is where the next quarterback comes off the board. Carolina moved on from Brooks Bollinger to draft "their guy." They haven't been willing to pay enough to move up into the top 2 yet (I'm listening, Daren), but Pickett is a good consolation prize at 1.18, though he likely never brings them a championship like Rivers would.
1.19
OLB Gilbert GardnerHeh, heh. I'm in danger. Can you imagine what a pair of EJ Henderson and Gilbert Gardner would do to opponents? I'm terrified if this actually happens.
1.20
WR Maurice MannOh, the memories we have of this name from the SFL. A nobody, who somehow, unwittingly, became an absolute stud in the league. Drafted by Leonard Jones, no more! Mann goes much earlier here and fills in a role on a quickly improving Jacksonville squad.
1.21
DT Tommie HarrisThis has to be a defensive tackle and Harris is the best remaining with Wilford off the board. Washington has no interior defensive line and this is a draft purely on need (and talent).
1.22
OT Sean BubinI have to imagine the 49ers have something ready to go at QB and will instead be drafting a top offensive lineman. Bubin is big, strong and fast and has mediocre blocking (that should instantly improve).
1.23
WR Johnnie MorantThe Ravens are going to want to spread the ball out as much as they can. Morant is tall, but could be very fast as well. I like this as a pick for Baltimore.
1.24
CB Keith SmithThe Bengals are going to want to improve their secondary in a division with the Ravens and the Steelers. Keith Smith isn't a sexy name, but I think he's a fantastic player for them at this juncture. He could probably start as their nickel right away.
1.25
OLB Charlie AndersonThe Texans continue to address their defense. After bringing in Vilma and DeAngelo Hall, they bring in one of the strongest outside linebackers in the league and he should help solidify that "new era" in Houston.
1.26
LT Jacob RogersGM Neal Wintermute always drafts for value and at this point, I think he's going to have to consider an athletic wonder like Jacob Rogers (81 ACC). Rogers is still here for a reason, but should fit in well in the climate controlled dome in the Big Easy.
1.27
OLB Raheem OrrThis is about the range I expect Orr to get drafted and I think someone like Breck is going to scoop him up quickly. He's tall (which Breck likes in linebackers) and he could potentially get moved to DE.
1.28
CB Greg BrooksIs there a way to mock a trade? GM Walstead's utter disdain and straight out condemnation of building through the draft in the past is well documented. He has reformed, but if he picks here, I'd guess it's someone like Brooks.
1.29
DT Randy StarksI keep forgetting I have this pick. But my two defensive tackles are a combined 71 years old. Might be time to bring in some new blood and Starks is the best remaining.
1.30
QB Ben RoethlisbergerScrew his age, there is no way that Brad doesn't take Big Ben and try to make it immediately work. Maybe Brett Favre will be available for a 1-2 year rental for someone if this is the case?
1.31
WR Michael JenkinsI almost considered another OL here, just for the memes, but the Dolphins do need some pass catchers as well. Jenkins fills that role nicely and gives them another threat down on South Beach.
1.32
FS Will AllenThis is a good value pick for the Ravens, who would likely move Allen (or Reed) to strong safety. Allen is better than this pick, but at a position people rarely want to draft high. It's likely he falls.
