Prime Time Football- A Look Back at the CB's drafted in the 2003 and 2004 PTF drafts
I thought of doing a quick look back into last year’s draft and maybe do a little review of the CB position. This ended up being anything but a quick review, lol. It ended up being that took parts of 3 days and/or nights. It was a fun way to pass some time though. It was not until doing this article I realized just how good of a draft this was for the CB position. I also realized that in both of PTF drafts they have been ones that while had had lots of 1st round CB’s not many have been over 6 feet tall which is sometimes a pre-requisite for some GM’s before they will draft a CB with a 1st round pick.
Some thing I found out or thought about:
• 22 CB’s were drafted in 2003
• 22 CB’s were also drafted this year
• 5 CB’s were drafted in the 1st round in 2003
• 6 CB’s were drafted in the 1st round this year
• 6 CB’s were drafted in the 2nd round in 2003
• 3 CB’s were drafted in the 2nd round this year
• 0 CB’s were drafted in the 3rd round in 2003
• 4 CB’s were drafted in the 3rd round this year
• 3 CB’s were drafted in the 4th round in 2003
• 1 CB was drafted in the 4th round this year
• 8 CB’s were drafted in rounds 5-7 in 2003
• 8 CB’s were also drafted in rounds 5-7 this year
Last year’s 1st CB, Terrence Newman was drafted 1.08. This year’s 1st CB drafted, DeAngelo Hall was drafted 1.07. Both players have very similar size. Hall is probably the better athlete while Newman might be the better overall player due to his STR and TAK,
Of the 11 CB’s drafted in the 1st round thus far in PTF, only 2 of them were taller than 6 foot. The Titans and GM Mellon drafted Dennis Weathersby (6’1”) at 1.13 last year and the Chiefs GM Ratajczak drafted Charles Tillam (6’2”) at 1.16 last season. None of our 1st round CB’s eclisped the 6 foot mark.
2003 PTF Draft
1st CB taken was with pick #1.08:
Terence Newman- Jacksonville Jaguars, 22 years old, 5’10”, 197# from Kansas State University
Pre Skew: not avail

2nd CB taken was with pick 1.13:
Dennis Weathersby- Tennessee Titans, 22 years old, 6’1”, 204# from Oregon State University
Pre Skew:
Post Skew: SPD 94, AGI 91, ACC 94, AWR 51, STR, 77, CTH 50, JMP 96, TAK 53, INJ 79, TGH 84
2003 stats: 61 TAK, 2 TFL, 1 FF, 4 INT, 23 DFL, 26 CTHA
3rd CB taken was with pick 1.15:
Marcus Trufant- Minnesota Vikings, 21 years old, 5’11”, 197#, from Washington State University
Pre Skew:
Post skew: SPD 91, AGI 91, ACC 97, AWR 61, STR 40, CTH 72, JMP 88, TAK 68, INJ 82, TGH 75
2003 stats: 49 TAK. 3 TFL, 1 SACK, 1 FF, 4 INT, 2 TD, 11 DFL, CTHA 33
4th CB taken was with pick 1.16:
Charles Tillman- Kansas City Chiefs, 24 years old, 6’2”, 210#, from the University of Lafayette
Pre Skew:
Post skew: SPD 94, AGI 87, ACC 91, AWR 53, STR 65, CTH 58, JMP 90, TAK 65, INJ 82, TGH 84
2003 stats: 52 TAK, 3 TKL,
5th CB taken was with pick 1:20:
Ken Hamlin- Denver Broncos
Hamlin does not qualify for this article as while he currently shows as a CB he was drafted as a FS.
Here are a look at the other CB’s taken in the 2003 PTF draft:
Pick 2.06 by the Arizona Cardinals and GM will Cook:
Waine Bacons from the University of Alabama
Key 2003 stats: 41 TAK, 1 SACK, 2 FR, 2 INT, 1 TD, 19 DFL, 15 CTHA
Comment: Bacon has a pretty decent rookie campaign. His DFL to CTHA allowed ratio was pretty sold. Nice pickup Will.
Playoff stats: lol, yeah right he was drafted the Arizona Cardinals and GM Will Cook. Playoffs? They do not know what this term references to.
Pick 2.13 by the Washington Redskins and GM Scotty Gardiner:
Nnamdi Asomugha from the University of California
Key 2003 stats: 25 TAK, 1 TFL, 1 INT, 4 DFL, 18 CTHA
Comment: I am assuming Asomugha was used in as a NCB during his rookie season. With sub 90 in SPD and ACC he may be the Redskins NCB from here on out. If he receives training camp he might be able to earn and keep the CB1 or CB2 spot in Washington. He has good size and can tackle so those two thigns are always helpful.
Pick 2.16 by the Green Bay Packers and GM Brad Barbers
Julian Battler from the University of Tennessee
Key 2003 stats: 16 TAK, 1 Sack, 4 DFL, 4 CTHA
Comment: Here is another CB with good size of 6’2” and 200#+. Battle already has 90+ SPD and ACC. If he earns a training camp spot his SPD could increase to 93 and ACC would go to 96. Battle was traded by the Packers this off season to the Pittsburgh Steelers and GM Wade Pearce for MLB James Harrison. We assume Battle will have an opportunity to earn a starting CB spot for the Steelers. He has the potential to be a very good CB, if he isn’t already considered one. I think his future is bright which is much needed for such a crappy, stinky city like Pittsburgh.
Pick 2.21 by the Cleveland Browns and GM Bill Ryan
Blue Adams from the University of Cincinnati
Key 2003 stats: 21 TAK, 1 TFL, 2 SACK, 1 DFL, 9 CTHA
Comment: While he does not have ideal size at 5’9” Adams could become an interesting player. He falls just short of the 90, 90, 90 platuea but would hit that with a training camp spot. With a training camp spot he could enter this preseason with 91 SPD, 75 STR, 90 AGI, 90 ACC and 90 JMP with 75 TAK. Let’s look at that again: 90 SPD = check, 90 AGI = check, 90 ACC = check, 90 JMP = check, PLUS 75 STR and 75 TAK! Even is he is 5’9” I think he should be considered for a starting CB spot for the Browns and GM Ryan this season.
Pick 2.23 by the New England Patriots and GM Rob Stanley
Andre Woolfolk from the University of Oklahoma
Key 2003 stats: 47 TAK, 6 TFL, 3 SACK, 1 FR, 2 INT, 1 TD, 21 DFL, 25 CTHA
Comment: Wow, what a great rookie season. I am curious as to where Woolfolk playes last season. Was there some safety work in there? I ask due to the combo of TKL and Sacks being 9. That is extremely good production fromm any CB, FS or SS, let alone a rookie. He will not see the 90, 90, 90 #’s as his ACC is 84 but his production proves players can performs with out being in the 90’s in all attributes. GM Stanley is going to win a championship soon, maybe multiple ones in a row. He has a great knack for recognizing talent.
Pick 2,27 by the Chicago Bears and former GM Brent
Asante Samuel from the University of Central Florida
Key 2003 stats: 27 TAK, 3 SACK, 1 INT, 7 DFL, 4 CTHA
Samuel had a solid rookie season in what was a limited capacity. He was able to come out with nearly double the DFL as CTHA with being under 6 foot tall and just 84 JMP.
Pick 4,09 by the Carolina Panthers and also a former GM
Drayton Florence from Tuskegee University
Key 2003 stats: 20 TAK, 1 TFL, 1 SACK, 2 FR, 1 INT, 5 DFL, 8 CTHA
Comment: This was good production from a 4th round rookie CB. I wonder what the future hold for Florence?
Pick 4.23 by the San Diego Chargers and GM Breck
Ricky Manning from the University of California of Los Angles
Key 2003 stats: 25 TAK, 2 SACK, 2 INT, 3 DFL, 9 CTHA
Comment: Another good rookie season from a 4th round CB. Nice drafting Breck.
Pick 4.30 by the Buffalo Bills and GM Tom Collins
Rashean Mathis from Beth Cookman University
Key 2004 stats: 7 TAK, 1 INT, 5 DFL, 2 CTHA, 1 TD
Comment: Mathis has been on the trade block all off season. As mentioned by GM Collins, he would make a very good safety. It seemed as if the price to pick up Mathis may have only been a 2nd or 3rd round pick. I am surprised Mathis still finds himself a Buffalo Bill.
Pick 5.15 by the San Diego Chargers and GM Breck
Torrie Cox from the University of Pittsburgh
Comment: Cox was released by the Chargers and is currently a free agent. I guess this proves a long standing rumor untrue that GM Breck in fact does NOT like Cox,
Pick 5.19 by the New England Patriots and GM Rob Stanley
Ike Taylor from the University of Louisiana of Lafayette
Comment: Did not play much for the Patriots last season and traded to GM Tim Miller and the Oakland Raiders this off season.
Pick 5.21 by the Cleveland Browns and GM Bill Ryan
Frank Walker from Tuskegee University
Comment: Walker Was released by GM Ryan and the Cleveland Browns and is currently a free agent.
Pick 6.14 by the Buffalo Bills and GM Tom Collina
Sammy Davis from the University of Texas A&M
Comment: Did not record a stat in 2003 but is still on the Buffalo Bills roster.
Pick 6.32 by the Tampa Bay Bucs and GM Ian Coyle
BJ Tucker
Comment: Tucker was released by GM Coyle Ryan and the Tampa Bay Bucs and is currently a free agent. Rumor has it that GM Cook of the Arizona Cardinals is looking to bring in Tucker for a workout as GM Cook is said to be proud of his skills with BJ’s. We will keep our eyes out for additional info as it becomes available.
Pick 7.06 by the Phildelphia Eagles and GM Gary Cohen
Michael Lehan from the University of Minnesota
Key 2003 stats: 17 TAK, 1 FR, 4 DFL, 10 CTHA, 1 KR
Comment: Nice pick Gary. When you are able to get stats like these from a 7th round pick it is a complete success.
Pick 7.22 by the New York Jets and GM Briston Redford
Terrence McGee from Northwestern State University
Key 2003 stats: 23 TAK, 1 FF, 1 INT, 2 DFL, 12 CTHA
Comment: See above comments on Lehan but only with more production. McGee enjoyed a good rookie season with 20+ TAK from being taken at nearly the end of the draft.
Pick 7.28 by the Pittsburg Steelers and GM Wade Pearce
DeJuan Groce from the University of Nebraska
Comment: Groce was released by GM Pearce and the Steelers and then later signed as a free agent by GM Rodany Mendez and the Detroit Lions. Groce did not record a stat in 2003 but is still on the Lions roster.
Pick 7.29 by the Pittsburg Steelers and GM Wade Pearce
Kevin Garrett from Southern Methodist University
Comment: Groce was released by GM Pearce and the Steelers and is currently a free agent.

2004 PTF Draft
1st CB taken was with pick 1.07:
DeAngelo Hall- Cincinnati Bengals, 21 years old, 5’10”, 200#, from Virginia Tech University
Pre Skew:
SPD 92
AGI 99
ACC 99
AWR 57
STR 52
CTH 56
JMP 89
TAK 59
INJ 99
TGH 96
Post Skew:
SPD +4 to 96
AGI -4 to 95
ACC stayed at 99
AWR +2 to 59
STR +4 to 56
CTH stayed the same at 67
JMP +7 to 96
TAK stayed the same at 59
INJ stayed the same at 99
TGH + 3 to 99.
Comment: Now that is what you call a good skew! Sure the AGI went down quite a bit but Hall received increases in SPD, AWR, STR, JMP, TAK & TGH. He will no doubt be the best defensive back on the Cincinnati Bengals roster. Due to the amazing skew and nearly INJ/TGH combo I would agree that Hall was the CB best suited to be able to step into a starting role during week 1 of the 2004 regular season. Plus, something I had not even thought about at first is that he is only 21 years old. For a GM to be able to land such a quality player at pick 1.07, he must come from a a legendary Madden GM family.
2nd CB taken was with pick 1.10:
Ahmad Carroll- Miami Dolphins, 22 years old, 5’10”, 190#, from the University of Arkansas
Pre Skew:
SPD 93
AGI 94
ACC 93
AWR 60
STR 54
CTH 54
JMP 89
TAK 56
INJ 71
TGH 85
Post Skew: Not available to me at the times of this article.
SPD +2 to 95
AGI stayed the same at 94
ACC -1 to 92
AWR -3 to 57
STR stayed the same at 54
CTH +1 to 55
JMP stayed the same at 89
TAK +2 to 58
INJ +5 to 76
TGH -3 to 82
Comment: Carroll will be a good CB for the Dolphins and GM Felipe. He enters the league with 95 SPD, 94 AGI and 92 ACC. He will no doubt have a starting spot for the Dolphins at either CB1 or CB2.
3rd CB taken was with pick1.11:
Nathan Vasher- San Diego Chargers, 23 years old, 5’10”, 185#, from the University of Texas
Pre Skew:
SPD 97
AGI 91
ACC 93
AWR 56
STR 48
CTH 55
JMP 98
TAK 65
INJ 91
TGH 90
Post Skew:
SPD -2 to 95
AGI +5 to 96
ACC +4 to 97
AWR +2 to 58
STR +9 to 57
CTH +3 to 58
JMP -3 to 95
TAK -4 to 81
INJ -1 to 90
TGH +9 to 99.
Comment: DAMN! I had to do a double take! Sure he is 5’10” like the twp revious CB’s but this could have been a top 3 pick. Who cares about the -2 to SPD as hes still at 95 (I do not think there is any noticeable diff from 95 to 99) He got two +9's and then +9 in AGI/ACC combo. Vasher will be a stud, just a shorter stud. Great job Breck!
4th CB taken was with pick 1.25:
Jeremy LeSueur- Houston Texans, 24 years old, 6’0”, 204#, from The Shithole University of Meat Chicken.
Pre Skew:
SPD 91
AGI 98
ACC 96
AWR 65
STR 57
CTH 22
JMP 91
TAK 78
INJ 77
TGH 90
Post Skew:
SPD stayed the same at 91
AGI -9 to 90
ACC -4 to 92
AWR -1 to 64
STR +3 to 60
CTH +4 to 26
JMP -3 to 88
TAK stayed the same at 78
INJ -1 to 76
TGH -9 to 81.
Comment: There is a large step down from Nathan Vasher who was taken at 1.11 and LeSueur who was taken at 1.25. This is of course due to LeSueur being taken 14 spots later. LeSueur is an interesting player. He is taller than the other CB’s take at 1.08, 1.11 and 1.11. I think that is going to help him. I love his 78 TAK. GM AC will never have to add progression points to TAK for LeSueuer. He also hit the 60 STR plateau as well as entering the PTF with 90+ in SPD, ACC & AGI. He may not as sexy as the three previous shorter CB’s but I think LeSueur is going to be sneaky good. Obviosuly LeSueuer’s age of 24 years scared some GM’s away. I would not have been too afraid of this as he could be looking at as many as five training camps. I think this was a nice pick AC.
5th CB taken was with pick 1.28:
Keith Smith- St Louis Rams, 22 years old, 5’11”, 191#, from McNeese State University
Pre Skew:
SPD 95
AGI 99
ACC 96
AWR 58
STR 63
CTH 52
JMP 88
TAK 48
INJ 75

6th CB taken was with pick 1.21:
Keith Smith- St Louis Rams, 22 years old, 5’11”, 191#, from McNeese State University
Pre Skew:
SPD 88
AGI 88
ACC 84

AWR +1 to 62
STR -4 to 64
CTH stayed the same at 55
JMP -8 to 87
TAK +1 to 68
INJ +4 to 70
TGH -2 to 70
Comment: On the surface, to me as I write this article it seems as if this might have beena reach as we end out the 1st round. I say this part due to Spencer not hitting the 90, 90, 90 plateau without have a specific attribute that really jumos out and makes him cover for the 88 AGI and 88 ACC, He has nice TAK for a rookie CB of 68. Also, it will not take him long before he reaches the 90, 90,90 plateau that was previously mentioned. Tom is one hell of a GM though and I have no doubt that he will find a way to get the most out of Spencer. This was also the first CB who could have a bit of an INJ concern. However, I will say that Spencer’s 50 INJ rating is only some of the players in this year’s draft could dream of.
Here is a look at CB’s taken outside of the 1st round in this year’s draft: (no comments given for players taken after the 2nd round.)
Pick 2.04 by the Atlanta Falcons and GM Peter Fenger:
Derrick Strait from the University of Oklahoma
Comment: Strait has 90+ in SPD, ACC and JMP prior to his provate workout. A good skew could allow him to enter the season as a starter for the Falcons as his INJ and TGH ratings are fine.
Pick 2.19 by the Seattle Seahawks and GM Rock
Von Hutchins from the University of Mississippi
Comment: 99 SPD, 97 AGI, 96 ACC & 99 JMP, what is there not to like, this guy should have been a top 5 pick, right? Well he has ratings of 6 in INJ and 12 in TGH. Those are the reasons for him dropping into the 2nd half of round 2. I really do not know what to expect from a top tier CB with bottom of the barrel INJ and TGH ratings. This could be a steal for the Seahawks.
Pick 2.20 by the New Orleans Saints and GM Wintermute
Greg Brooks from the University of Southern Mississippi
Comments. I know Brooks was originally being looked at very early on by GM Roberts of the Carolina Panthers. The INJ concerns are what allowed Brooks to fall. With pre PW attributes of 97 SPD, 76 STR, 95 AGI, 99 ACC, 99 JMP and 68 TAK he would have been a can not miss prospect and top 10 pick had it not been for his 17 INJ and 0 TGH ratings. GM Wintermute is not the type of GM who misses on picks or trades. We should know early on if his gamble was worth it. If it was this is another absolute steal. If Brooks does get injured his 0 TGH should mean the injury could land him on the injured list for quite some time.
Pick 3.10 by the Miami Dolphins and GM Feleipe Lopez
Rich Gardner
Pick 3.13 by the New England Patriots and GM Rob Stanley
Keiwan Ratliff
Comment: I will go ahead and comment on this one as I saw his actual #’s: 90 SPD, 93 AGI, 93 ACC and good INJ of 75 & TGH of 82. This was a great pick and backs up why I said earlier GM Stanley is going to be a force to be reckoned with.
Pick 3.19 by the Baltimore Ravens and GM Norbert
Michael Waddell
Pick 3.28 by the Arizona Cardinals and GM Will Cook
Vontez Duff
Pick 4.03 by the Detoit Lions and GM Rodany Mendez
Bruce Thornton
Pick 5.01 by the Green Bay Packers and GM Brad Barber
Joey Thomas
Pick 5.14 by the New York Jets and GM Briston Redford
Ricardo Colclough
Pick 5.22 by the San Francisco 49’ers and GM Brady Tinnin
Dunta Robinson
Pick 5.23 by the Baltimore Ravens and GM Norbert
Chris Thompson
Pick 5.30 by the New York Giants and GM Ro Mendez
Chris Gamble
Pick 6.17 by the Chicago Bears and the PTF commissioner team
Will Poole
Pick 6.33 by the San Francisco 49’ers and GM Brady Tinnin
Jason David
Pick 7.05 by the Cleveland Browns and GM Bill Ryan
