2004 Season Predictions
By Tommy Collins

AFC North: The Browns still haven’t filled out their roster, they’re going to fill it with guys who have been combed through multiple times. The Ravens are expected to develop QB Cody Pickett and even though their run game and defense will do well, I think this limits how far they can go this year. The Bengals are still developing Carson Palmer, he will be a stud when he gets there, but he isn’t there yet. The Steelers, who acquired Donovan McNabb in a blockbuster move are going to run this division.

AFC East: The Dolphins are in full rebuild mode. The Jets could be competitive with a GM running the show that has more time to invest. Their roster is pretty solid, Chad Pennington underperformed on top of being injured last year. They are in line to challenge for 2nd place in the division. The Bills were great on offense, stinky on defense and traded 2 of their best offensive weapons to try to improve defensively, making them average. The Patriots with Tom Brady are going to control this division for a few more seasons. With weak FA classes and not very strong draft classes, the teams that started out with the studs will stay at the top for a while.

AFC South: The Texans are not rebuilding, they’re building as an expansion team, they have a LONG road ahead. The Jaguars have a good team, as do the Titans. Both could make some noise and be contenders in the wild card race, but everybody knows the Colts led by Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Dwight Freeney, etc., are going to control the division, barring injuries. I think the Titans and Jaguars could make it interesting and will be tasked with figuring out how to slow down the no-huddle offense.

AFC West: I think this division is the most wide-open in the AFC. The Chargers traded Drew Brees right as he’s ready to break out to go with Eli Manning, so they won’t be immediately competitive. The Chiefs are running it back with Byron Leftwich who is entering year 2, he’s not yet ready to be the guy. The Broncos are also rocking a year 2 QB in Chris Simms. Obviously, there is more to teams than QB play, but it is the most important position and a strong indicator of how successful teams will be. The top QB in the division is … Brian Griese?

NFC North: The Bears are still experimenting with Kliff Kingsbury at QB with his 52 AWR. It’s going to be a long season for Chicago. The Lions did not get better at QB this off-season, it looks like it’s Joey Harrington or Kyle Boller again for them. The Packers and Vikings are going to be battling head-to-head for the division. It’s Brett Favre and Daunte Culpepper, with both teams rounded out with some very good veteran players. From my perspective it’s a coin flip on which team comes away with it.

NFC East: The Eagles unexpectedly traded McNabb for Gibran Hamdan, good young prospect but not ready to take the team to the playoffs just yet. The Giants are still developing Tony Romo. The Redskins have Patrick Ramsey who only had 136 pass attempts last year and lost out on his development. The #1 team? The Dallas Cowboys who wisely traded for Drew Brees and vaulted themselves to the top of the division in that move. A 25-year-old QB with 83 AWR, 92 THP, 93 THA, they’re going to be tops in that division for a while, regardless of what the rest of that roster looks like. It will fill-out just fine now that the most important position is figured out.

NFC South: I am truly surprised the Panthers won the division last year. I think they overperformed and don’t foresee them repeating this year. The Saints have 6 QBs but none of them are really good. Perhaps we see 2nd round pick Ben Roethlisberger starting for them? I think it’s down to the Michael Vick-led Falcons and the Buccaneers who acquired the QB with the highest QB Rating last year in Drew Bledsoe. I think I’m going to give Tampa Bay a slight edge in this race.

NFC West: The Cardinals took the best QB in the draft, and I believe he would have mistakenly fallen to the 2nd overall pick as the Chargers were locked in on Manning. Matt Hasselbeck is at 77 AWR at age 29, he isn’t going to get there before regression starts knocking him back down. The 49ers had to acquire 34-year-old Trent Green as they couldn’t land a better option this off-season. But we all know it’s the Greatest Show on Turf running this division with the Kurt Warner-led Rams with Torry Holt and Marshall Faulk. One of those deeply stacked teams that’s going to take a while to fade into the sunset.

Wild Card Round

#6 @ #3
The Titans, who edge out the Jaguars for the #6 seed, face off against the Tom Brady-led Patriots who were surprisingly the #3 seed. I think the Titans are good, but the Patriots are the Patriots. The favorites take the W here.

#5 @ #4
The Raiders get the #4 seed due to a weaker division despite a worse record. The Bills made it to the title game last year without ever having a home game, they're used to it and come out as the victors here.

#6 @ #3
Divisional games are so hard to predict, I honestly feel like there's something built into the engine with them because they appear to be more of a crapshoot than usual. I'm going to lean on the home team with this one and go with the Buccaneers.

#5 @ #4
The Packers are the more complete team and only a Wild Card team because of how good the Vikings also are. The Cowboys have a weaker division so they secure the #4 seed with a worse record but the Packers advance in this one.

Divisional Round

#5 @ #1
A rematch of the AFC Title Game last year. The Bills did well in that game, and they could put up points again. But just like last year, the defense cannot hold up against that offense and the favorites roll on to a second straight title game.

#3 @ #2
This would be an entertaining game to watch. Both have stud QBs, but I think the Patriots have the better overall roster and players on defense to make some big stops. I have a Manning-Brady bowl upcoming.

#5 @ #1
Can the Packers knock off the aging-Rams team? THEY CAN! The upset shocks the PFL world and the Packers advance to the title game, leaving some to wonder if the "Greatest Show on Turf" has ended.

#3 @ #2
I think the Buccaneers are a surprising 3 seed, but there are some stronger teams in the conference. I think the Vikings are just too damn tough, when healthy, to beat, and they advance to a divisional show down in the title game against the Packers.

Championship Game

#3 @ #1
I would love to see the Colts get knocked off and not make their 2nd appearance. I always have affinity for the underdog, but also root against teams I believe were inherited. Both of these teams truly are, but I think the Colts overall roster is too strong.

#5 @ #2
As previously mentioned, divisional games are tough to predict. I think the Vikings are the more complete team and would expect a rematch of last year's Super Bowl, but I don't think this is an easy matchup for either team and wouldn't be surprised if either team won.

Super Bowl

#1 vs #2
A rematch of the first PFL Super Bowl, how fricken boring! I like the weaker draft classes, in the past the player pool got diluted so fast with how many studs came out of there. The downside is the real good teams from the start are going to stay at the top for much longer. I think the Vikings figure it out and prevent a repeat by the Colts, but for both teams to make it back to the big dance is an accomplishment.
