Week 1 Recap

The Colts blew the Patriots out in a surprising fashion. It helped that QB Tom Brady was knocked out of the game but he was only 11/23 for 112 yards before that took place. More than enough time to produce but he was held in check. Peyton Manning threw for 448 yards and 5 TDs on top of it. The Colts could be even better this year.

I expected the Jags to run with QB Mark Brunell but they decided to start the 3rd round rookie Matt Muack instead. Mauck threw 6 passes before he was knocked out of the game and Brunell threw 3 TDs to beat the Bills in overtime. The Jags converted just one 3rd down on the day, but the 2 Kerry Collins INTs were too much for the Bills to overcome.

Neither team has a good QB, I thought the Ravens had the better supporting cast. Divisional games are a toss-up. The Ravens outperformed the Browns in yardage, 3rd down %, time of possession and in the Red Zone. It was a 1 score game and the Ravens gave up 1 more turnover.

A real barn burner with a 14-7 final score. QB Craig Krenzel actually played well before he was knocked out of the game, but the QB play on both sides wasn't great. The Bears stole a possession with the lone turnover of the game and were more efficient on 3rd downs. Krenzel is out for 10 weeks, the offense in Chicago is going to be ugly for a while.

Correct
Eli Manning was efficient going 15-25 for 193 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT while LaDainian Tomlinson tore it up with 154 yards rushing and 2 TDs. David Carr actually had a stellar day for Houston, throwing for 289 yards and 3 TDs, and HB James Allen averaged 5.92 yards on the day. It was a clean day with no turnovers from either side. Signs of improvement for Houston!

It was a 38-14 blowout for Seattle. Hasselbeck only threw for 186 yards but had 4 TDs. Shaun Alexander grinded it out with 178 yards rushing. The Seahawks outgained the Saints 417-215 as the Saints started 6th round rookie QB Luke McCown. The Seahawks have more veteran talent, this game played out as it should've.

I was lucky on this game, Steve McNair isn't the starting QB in Tennessee? Or are they playing matchups? Brooks Bollinger actually played very well, completing 70% of his passes and throwing 2 TDs. Newly acquired Priest Holmes averaged over 7 ypc on 22 carries and the Titans offense more than doubled that of the Dolphins. Dolphins QB Rex Grossman was just 10-25 for 127 yards, an INT and lose fumble.

I thought Chad Pennington was going to have a strong year. He had a pretty decent day, going 22-39 for 423 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. The ground game didn't get going with LaMont Jordan held to 40 yards and a lost fumble. They still managed 17 first downs and over 450 yards of offense, but got blown out 38-17 by the Carson Palmer-led Bengals. Palmer threw for 237 yards and 3 TDs while Michael Bennett did alright on the ground. The Bengals took 3 Red Zone trips and turned them into TDs and converted 58% of their 3rd downs.

Only 1 point separated these teams, that was unexpected. The Rams have all the star power and Warner did great, throwing for 352 yards, 3 TDs and 0 INTs. The run game was nonexistent as they averaged only 3 ypc on the day. They had some turnovers on Special Teams, one of which that led to a TD that almost cost them the game. For the Cardinals it was Thomas Jones leading the way with 24 carries for 126 yards. Philip Rivers' debut was unimpressive as he was sacked 7 times and finished with only 103 yards and an INT.

Correct
QB Donovan McNabb did well, throwing for 2 TDs but only 179 yards. HB Stephen Davis cracked 100 yards on the day. The Raiders really hung in there, Brian Griese did okay. It was an odd game for the Raiders with 6 different players getting carries on the day with Casey Moore seemingly benched or suffering a mysterious injury.

I thought QB Drew Bledsoe would hit the ground running for Tampa Bay, he finished with just 146 yards, 2 TDs and 2 INTs. The ground game was also stuck in mud as they combined for 2.64 YPC on the day. Despite the inefficient offense, the Redskins controlled the Time of Possession 24:30 to 19:57. The Redskins were just worse as they had 5 turnovers on the day, all at the hands of young QB Patrick Ramsey.

Big upset here! The defending NFC Champs dropped their season opener 24-10 to the Cowboys. Drew Brees was expected to make Dallas better, but he only gained 169 yards through the air on the day. Both teams struggled on third downs. Neither team's box score looked good but it appeared to be closer than the score indicated. Dallas did have 21 points in the 4th Quarter which may have played a part in that.

The Eagles blow out the Giants 47-13 in week 1 with second year QB Gibran Hamdan throwing for 260 yards and 2 TDs and the ground game contributing 3 more scores. The Giants looked hapless with Tony Romo completing 36.6% of his passes for only 4.34 YPA and 6 INTs! He was seeing ghosts this Halloween weekend.

The 49ers and rookie QB J.P. Losman take it to the Falcons in an impressive fashion. SF topped Atlanta in First Downs 14 to 9, 3rd down % 41.18% to 35.71%, total offense 316 to 208, turnover 0 to 2 and time of possession 29:24 to 14:36. It was just a dominant performance. Losman was efficient converting 60% and playing turnover free, Rudi Johnson topped 100 yards on the ground and the defense forced 2 Michael Vick fumbles. Vick threw 2 TDs, but didn't have a very good day through the air. The offense sputtered and couldn't stop a rebuilding 49ers offense.

The Broncos get a good divisional win against the Chiefs in a game in which the Chiefs had 3 different QBs throwing passes, and none of them looked good. They combined for 101 total passing yards, 0 TDs and 2 INTs. They managed just 8 first downs on the day and were kept to under 200 yards of total offense. The Broncos defense did well and was led by newly acquired WR T.J. Houshmanzadeh who went off for 7-123 and a TD.

Correct
Brett Favre threw for 382 yards and 4 TDs while Ahman Green rushed for 121 yards and 1 TD in an impressive offense performance by Green Bay. They had a whopping 26 first downs!! Wow. They dominated on offense, but the Panthers had some guys play well, too. Billy Volek was under 50% but threw for 282 yards and 1 TD, while DeShaun Foster cracked the century mark and had 2 TDs.
