2005 PTF Mock Draft | v1.0
PICKTEAMPLAYERANALYSIS
1.01
QB Derek AndersonEveryone has been picking Alex Smith first overall, but I have to think that Derek Anderson's THP and THA both being in the 90s has to intrigue the New York Jets. It's really Anderson or Smith here, and I think the Anderson gets the nod to the Big Apple.
1.02
QB Alex SmithAnd really, the Bears are going to take whoever doesn't get selected first overall, not quite unlike Eli and Rivers last year. Smith might be the better player right away, and seems like the type of player that Nathan Jones has one championships before.
1.03
WR Braylon EdwardsI know that Washington just traded up for this pick, but my gut tells me real-life 'Skins fan Scott Gardiner isn't ready to give up on Patrick Ramsey. So what do you do? You get him the best receiving threat in this class and that's Braylon Edwards.
1.04
WR Vincent JacksonThis is a great spot for the reigning Super Bowl champ to be sitting in. He can either grab Edwards or the 6'5" Vincent Jackson at this spot. Jackson is a physical threat and should immediately make an impact on opposing secondaries.
1.05
SS Antrel RolleI don't think there is any way that Neal Wintermute doesn't draft Antrel Rolle with this selection. Rolle is the best player in this draft and will be one of the best safeties in the league within a couple of seasons. I know there is some talk of him converting to corner, but I like him better as a safety.
1.06
WR Dante RidgewayUnpopular opinion, but I think the third wide receiver off the board will be the receiver with the surprising throwing arm. Ridgeway is fast however, and a decent kick returner. And he has better awareness, which receivers like Matt Jones do not have.
1.07
MLB Alfred FincherFincher has been an absolute unit in previous incarnations of this league and this version of him looks the same. He is a bit undersized, but should do well in any 3-4 scheme, while potentially being decent enough to run point in 4-3 units as well.
1.08
WR Roddy WhiteThis is a tough selection here, and I think the Falcons end up moving down again. Roddy White might be the best receiver left, despite being slightly undersized. Him being a Falcon in real life makes this feel more "right" and he slots into an offense looking to improve.
1.09
CB Eric GreenThis is me more playing a hunch than anything. I see the 99 agility and presume that Green's speed will have to skew up on draft day. In a rather unexciting secondary draft, Green's all around ability may be the best and fills a position of need in New York.
1.10
CB Adam JonesHowever, I think the Browns go for the big name, which is Adam "Pacman" Jones. His 71 awareness is amazing for a rookie and if he skews up correctly in agility and acceleration, this could be an amazing pick for the Dawg Pound.
1.11
WR Courtney RobyAfter the top ten, it gets a bit more difficult to determine where players are going to fall, I feel. Kansas City likely wants to add a new threat at receive, but there aren't any slot players left at the position that merit a top selection.
1.12
OT Michael RoosI think that Roos will be the first tackle off the board, primarily because of his amazing agility and acceleration. He's going to be an absolute stud and getting him this late in the draft is an absolute steal for the San Francisco 49ers.
1.13
FS Kurt CampbellThe Giants continue to bolster their secondary, grabbing the best free safety in the draft mere moments after taking a new cornerback. Campbell isn't getting a lot of talk early on, but he's an athletic stud that can hit extremely hard.
1.14
CB Mike HawkinsI think that Hawkins is more raw than a lot of people would like, but you can't deny his potential in the right system. I wouldn't be surprised to see Gary Cohen take a change on him with one of his back to back picks here in the first round.
1.15
OT Jammal BrownThat being said, Philadelphia also needs to shore up their offensive line if they want young Gibran Hamdan to have a successful NFL career. Brown is getting rated lower than some other tackles, but I think he has all the tools and the smarts to be an immediate impact.
1.16
WR Airese CurrieThere's been a lot of talk about Phil potential taking an offensive lineman, but I think he goes out there and finds a new target for Carson Palmer to throw to. Currie could develop into something special, and he looks like he'll be great on special teams.
1.17
OG Elton BrownNo use getting a new quarterback if he's going to spend every waking moment on his back after getting sacked. The Bears have to look at the interior of their offensive line and I do think that Elton Brown is the best choice in this draft. He's fast, large and in charge.
1.18
CB Travis DanielsAt this juncture, you have to look for value. I wouldn't be surprised to see Carolina go after someone like Travis Daniels as a strong potential cornerback for their team down the line. The acceleration is a concern, but looking at him, I think the tools are there.
1.19
OT Adam TerryThe Bears bolstered the interior, now they look to the exterior and take the last of the three great offensive tackles in this class. Adam Terry has everything you're looking for, even if he is a bit raw on the blocking end. That should only take a couple seasons to fix.
1.20
WR Matt JonesThere is no way that Rock Hewko would not select Matt Jones if he is still sitting there at the 20th pick. There are concerns, namely his 47 awareness. However, his 6'6" frame makes up for a lot of that and if he thinks he can be a stud, he becomes a Seahawk.
1.21
CB Ron BartellThis is how bad Carolina's secondary looks -- I think they have to double dip here in the first round. Drafting Travis Daniels and Ron Bartell gives them a chance to build this defense up over the next few seasons when teams like Tampa Bay have regressed.
1.22
WR Troy WilliamsonThe question that needs to be asked here is: "Which player will terrify the Tennessee Titans the most?" The answer is Troy Williamson, so he absolutely needs to be the pick. Garth Pearce is doing what I never could and it brings me tears of joy constantly.
1.23
LOLB Derrick JohnsonThe Bills are going to have to draft a linebacker at some point and they are in luck that none of the OLBs in this class are off the board yet despite being a pretty good class. I'm a big fan of Johnson and think he'll be a quality defender for close to a decade.
1.24
LOLB Shawne MerrimanI think Anthony Fernandez is going to be gunning for Johnson, but in a story that only the likes of an ESPN 30-for-30 could tell, the Bills and Tom Collins steal him right out from under them. A steel cage match ensues and everyone wins. Merriman becomes a consolation prize.
1.25
DT Alfred MaloneI'm not huge on this defensive tackle class, but the Ravens are in desperate need of a big guy in the middle. Alfred Malone isn'tthe strongest, but he has elite agility and acceleration. I think he could go earlier than people expect.
1.26
WR Chase LymanLyman is a raw receiver, but he has the athletic abilities and the height that the Steelers are likely to target. I'm not 100% sure what their plan is at quarterback (it's not Boller....right?), but Lyman will give whoever it is a chance.
1.27
OT Wesley BrittYou have to feel that the window is yet again closing in Tampa, but shoring up their offensive line gives them their best small window to contend for a championship. Britt seems the best outside lineman available and can probably start day one.
1.28
CB Antonio PerkinsFelipe tends to focus on areas, so defense will be the theme of this draft for him. Starting with Fincher and then bringing in a future number one cornerback seems like a good first round. He can't be too mad at grabbing him here.
1.29
FS Josh BullocksI'm not exactly sure where Tim is going to go with this pick, but Josh Bullocks looks like a good tackle who can take over the starting gig in Oakland. It's not a sexy pick by any means, but the type of pick that should help him continue to win.
1.30
LOLB Thomas Davis Sr.The Broncos will double down on outside linebackers, now bringing in Thomas Davis Sr., who absolutely has to skew up. And if he does, his tackling ability is not matched in this class. He's a good starter who may start out in the rotation but end up starting by the end of the year.
1.31
WR LeRon McCoyAll offense for the new look Jets who are trying to get Derek Anderson every opportunity to succeed. McCoy isn't a name a lot of people will talk about, but he's 6'1" and has quality attributes that can only get better. It's a good pick at this juncture.
1.32
LG Logan MankinsMankins does not have the athletic abilities that a lot of people look for in their offensive linemen, but he has everything else and I believe that will be enough for Apolo. Mankins fills a big need on the Cowboys roster and starts day one.
