PFL – Draft Class Attribute Threshold Explanation
Each season I enjoy dumping the draft class into an EXCEL spreadsheet… and then begin my scouting process. Prior to the copy / paste of talent into EXCEL… I do a VERY quick targeting of obvious talent that catches my eye (this QUICK glance can be HEAVILY influenced based on my teams needs) – this year, 13 players were targeted before the DEEP DIVE.
After the class has been transferred to EXCEL I do some simple formatting (borders, column / row width and height and select a font that is easy on the eyes) – I also move the “POS” column to the left of the player name and place the target column to the very far left (hate “POS” placement after WT, so annoying).
Primarily, I use GREEN and RED cell color fill to identify positive and negative ratings for attributes of importance – I may evaluate attribute you don’t and may overlook attribute you find important, so the scouting of talent I do may not match up well with your view and evaluation of players.
Attributes that are globally rated… AWR, STA, INJ, TGH and KR – I may be more critical or forgiving with these attribute thresholds based on position (for example, QB I’d be more critical than K or P as it pertains to INJ).
AWR: 60 and higher is GREEN while 49 and lower is RED… I’ll attempt to address weight / importance when I review each position.
STA: 90 and higher is GREEN while 69 and lower is RED… I’ll attempt to address weight / importance when I review each position.
INJ: 90 and higher is GREEN while 69 and lower is RED… I’ll attempt to address weight / importance when I review each position.
TGH: 90 and higher is GREEN while 69 and lower is RED… I’ll attempt to address weight / importance when I review each position.
KR: 85 and higher is GREEN while I do not call out a threshold for RED.
With that being all explained… lets move through the Offense position by position – I hope you find this helpful.
QB – The is NO position more valuable in the game… and because of that, you’ll find teams / GMs (at times) reaching for talent and selecting a player much higher than deserved. Historically, teams / GMs have failed to offer appropriate patience after selecting a QB in the 1st round – below you’ll find a list of 1st round QBs who were selected and eventually traded (in the first 3 season of the PFL):
2003… Gibran Hamdan [1.03], Steelers to Eagles
2003… Brooks Bollinger [1.09], Panthers to Titans to Vikings
2003… Chris Simms [1.30], Cowboys to Broncos to Colts
2003… Dave Ragone [1.32], Buccaneers to Packers
2004… Philip Rivers [1.01], Cardinals to Texans
2005… Derek Anderson [1.19], Raiders to Jaguars
There have been 14 QBs selected in the 1st round in 3 drafts… 6 of those players have been traded (some more than one time) – that’s nearly 43% of 1st round QBs no longer on the team that originally drafted them (that seem CRAZY high).
Evaluating talent at the position is straight forward (simple)… it comes down to three [3] attributes:
AWR: You should be looking for a rating of 60 or higher (GREEN)… this can be rare and you might have to settle for a rating in the 55-59 range. Though the global rating is 49 and lower (RED) – it’s HIGHLY doubtful I’d be interested in a QB that has a rating below 55 (your average player can count on 6 TCs max, that allows for a +12 that can be applied – you’d be lucky to get 80 AWR by the time the player is 29 / 30).
THP: I have, over time, found that THP might not be as important as once believed… I still prefer the rating to be higher as it can elongate a player’s career (probably more important at the QB position than any other position). You should be looking for a rating of 90 or higher (GREEN)… I’d be willing to go as low at 85 if the player had an extremely favorable AWR and/or THA rating. Stay clear of a player if his AWR is 84 and lower (RED).
THA: You should be looking for a rating of 85 or higher (GREEN)… The nice thing is, finding a player with a favorable THA rating can be more common – knowing AWR almost ALWAYS must be progressed, it’s important this rating is high and almost at an ideal spot. If a player has a rating of 79 and lower (RED), it’s likely the player will never be elite – VERY hard to progress both AWR and THA even with 6+ TCs, playing time and few to no injuries.
Other attributes of interest… Age probably weighs in more importantly (we all like em’ YOUNG), typically looking for a taller QB (6’3” and taller – but not critical) and though INJ is a global rating it’s probably most important to be HIGH for a QB.
I hope to follow this up with additional positions... HBs are up next!
