Top 3 by Position (pre – Private Workout)
Full disclosure, I use the site (Grading System) to help rank guys… it is far from perfect – but gets things cleaned up a bit where it makes it much easier to identify who I’m going target at each position. The Top 3 is determined by the Grading system – Honorable Mentions are guy I think deserve consideration for Top 3.
**QB Vince Young** – I love his THP and THA, already at a point of elite territory – which means the sole focus can be AWR. With playing time and TCs I see Young as a Franchise QB easily!
**QB Jay Cutler** - I love his THP and THA, approaching a point of elite territory (THA needs some attention) – it will take a little longer to get both AWR and THA to a desired elite level, but can be done with a little patience. With playing time and TCs I see Cutler as a Franchise QB – but historically, guys like like this have less than a 50/50 chance of being on the same team in 2-3 seasons!
**QB Kellen Clemens** – A favorable skew is needed here… all critical attributes (AWR, THP and THA) need to be progressed – this is a longer project, and should only be for the dedicated GM.
Honorable Mention: I believe Jay Cutler deserves to be ranked… but the grading system saw it differently… Matt Leinart also should be in the conversation with a positive skew and some TLC he could be groomed and a worthy starter (eventually).
**HB DeAngelo Williams** – SOLID option if one needs a HB… there’s no changing his size [5’9”], so I suspect some will be out on him RIGHT AWAY and his BTK needs some attention.
**HB Cedric Humes** – His STR and BTK are GREAT… he’s slow and needs a lot of help from a favorable skew (I don’t like his odds) – could see him moved/used to FB, but that would require a “Non-Traditional Position Changes” which most would not be able to afford.
**HB Brandon Schnittker** – He’s younger than most (A LOT of GMs like that) and he has a number of attributes that look good (STR, AGI, ACC and BTK)… his SPD is concerning and a favorable skew is NEEDED.
Honorable Mention: I find the HB class to be awful (on the surface anyway)… outside of Williams, the only other guys I’d consider viable are Mike Bell and David Brown (KR).
**FB – RIDICULOUS**… you’re better off looking anywhere but the draft for a FB.
**TE Vernon Davis** – He’s a lock to go in the 1st round… even though he’s no WIZZARD (Wonderlic Test score concern) – he’s not going to be dedicated to the run blocking duties, but he’ll do wonders as viable target for a QB.
**TE Leonard Pope** – He’s a lock to go in the 1st round… he’s a GIANT standing at 6’8” and his SPD and ACC are off the charts for his position (TE1 and WR3 duties for sure) – he’s another guy that has NO time for blocking duties, probably goes top 10.
**TE Anthony Fasano** – another guy who timed very well at the combine (SPD and ACC)… this is another guy who struggles to do simple math (Wonderlic Test score concern) – he’s the worst blocker in the TE draft class.
Honorable Mention: I find the TE class to be VERY tempting… especially if you’re drawn to receiving threat – not a lot of blue-collar options here. I find Marcedes Lewis to be the proto-typical TE option (a nice well-rounded option for the run and pass game / scheme).
**OT DBrickashaw Ferguson** – He’s head and shoulders above the rest of the offensive linemen in this years draft class, the only area of grooming needed – work on that initial first step (ACC). Top 10… possibly top 5 pick in this years draft.
**OT Andrew Whitworth** – He’s a lock to go in the 1st round… there will be someone that can get past his age [25] and that fact he’s not the brightest bulb in the drawer (Wonderlic Test score concern).
**OT Paul McQuistan** – Well rounded player, a guy that can start and be groomed into a long term option… his SPD and AWR are the areas of mild concern.
Honorable Mention: I find the talent of offensive linemen to be good, not great… but good enough to offer some options in the top 2 to 3 rounds. A few other guys worth a look… Rob Sims, Brad Butler, David Joseph and Jason Palermo.
