Post-Free Agency Mock Draft
1.01
LB DeMeco Ryans
Analysis: The Panthers have filled a lot of their other needs and opt to take who they believe is the best player in the draft. Off ball LBs don't often go this high, but the Panthers believe DeMeco Ryans is an exception. There's good reason for that as he has 90 SPD, 77 STR and 70 AWR. He has the ability to be a great every down LB who will be all over the field. The Panthers want to build a strong defense to help out their 2nd year QB Andrew Walter.
1.02
from
CB Antonio Cromartie
Analysis: The Cardinals up one spot for this pick, indicating they have a player they really want. They upgraded their offense in free agency by trading for QB Chad Pennington and adding multiple veteran WRs. They have a strong offense, but the defense needs more work. Adding Cromartie gives them the highest awareness player in the class and a player who can start immediately for them.
1.03
from
WR Brandon Marshall
Analysis: The Vikings traded 1.06, 3.11, and a future 1st for this pick, which is a heavy investment. Brandon Marshall could be a player worth that investment as their replacement for recently traded WR Randy Moss. Marshall is 6'5 and has 97 SPD, 99 ACC, and 83 CTH. He has 52 AWR which will cause him to be a bit of a project, but he could turn into one of the premiere WRs in the league soon.
1.04
DT Haloti Ngata
Analysis: The Giants have a few different routes they could take with this pick. They go with a massive DT in Haloti Ngata here. Ngata has 92 STR, 63 AWR, and 93 TKL. He is 340 lbs and has 69 SPD to go along with his massive size. This may be high for a DT, but Ngata is going to become a dominant force in the league quickly and is able to start right away.
1.05
from
CB Devin Hester
Analysis: The Vikings traded 1.19, 1.27, and 1.28 to move up to this pick. They want to win now and have opted to go for quality over quantity with two top 5 picks. They could use help in their secondary and opt to take Devin Hester, who has 95 SPD, 62 AWR, and 74 CTH. Hester is 24 years old which may cause teams to avoid him, but the Vikings are in win now mode and are likely comfortable taking an older prospect like Hester. He is athletic and has great hands which should make him a great. ball hawk CB in the league
1.06
from
LB Chad Greenway
Analysis: The Jets trading down (twice) shows that they believe they have a lot of options with their top pick and are comfortable waiting to see who falls to them. Chad Greenway has great physical attributes for a LB, and could even play other positions if the team wanted him to. He has 99 SPD, 72 STR, 52 AWR, 86 TKL. His speed will likely skew down, although he still has great speed especially for his size. His awareness will need to be worked on, but he has a great floor from a physical standpoint.
1.07
from
QB Vince Young
Analysis: The Jaguars originally traded for QB Derek Anderson from the Raiders, but then flipped him to the Buccaneers. This signals that they really like what they are targeting a QB in this class, and Vince Young is the top of the class. Young has elite physical attributes with 75 SPD and 97 THP. He has 96 THA and 59 AWR, his awareness will need to be improved but everything else is great.
1.08
from
DT Kyle Williams
Analysis: After cutting DT Bryant Young, the Jets have a potential need at IDL. Kyle Williams has 90 STR, 65 AWR, and 90 TKL, which are comparable stats to the other top IDL in this class, Haloti Ngata. Williams is smaller than Ngata, and his size could be a concern. Everything else about him is great and he should go early in the draft and be a instant contributor.
1.09
OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Analysis: The Saints have made a commitment to Big Ben as their starting QB this season after trading Luke McCown. They add the best OL in the class to help him out. Fergunson has 93 STR, 93 PBK, and 92 RBK, although there is a decent chance those blocking attributes skew down. OL isn't the exciting pick and that usually causes them to fall, but the Saints could benefit from adding a franchise tackle.
1.10
QB Jay Cutler
Analysis: The Browns may have the worst roster in the league going into the draft. They didn't add anyone in free agency or by trade and the Tim Couch contract is the worst in the league. They will likely want to move off Couch sooner than later as it's difficult to build the rest of the roster when he is taking up as much of the cap as he currently is. The Browns draft their QB of the future here in Cutler. He has 54 AWR so he may not play right away, but he has 97 THP and 91 THA. The Browns may decide to wait until next year to find their next QB, but if they like Cutler he has the potential to be Tim Couch's successor.
1.11
from
WR Greg Jennings
Analysis: The Chargers traded down and still get a great player with this pick. They don't have many needs so this is a luxury pick for them. The Chargers have Plaxico Burress and Vincent Jackson, who are both 6'5. Greg Jennings give them an elite deep threat that compliments both Burress and Jackson, he has 99 SPD, 97 AGI, and 94 ACC.
1.12
WR Marques Colston
Analysis: QB Aaron Rodgers was the best rookie QB this past season, and the Bears will want to add more talent around him to help him continue to grow. Marques Colston is a massive 6'5 WR who would give Rodgers a great red zone weapon. He has 48 AWR which could cause teams to avoid him, but in the past 6'5 WRs have not lasted long in the draft.
1.13
from
TE Leonard Pope
Analysis: The Jaguars flipped QB Derek Anderson for this pick and after getting QB Vince Young earlier, they opt to get him a big weapon. Pope is 6'8 264 lbs, although he's a poor blocker. Pope has 90 SPD, 92 AGI, 89 ACC, he's the type of player that would have a 10.00 RAS score. He could turn into one of the biggest mismatches in the entire league with his size and athleticism.
1.14
from
TE Vernon Davis
Analysis: The Redskins will have a new QB under center this season as they traded for David Garrard from the Patriots. They have a clear need at TE andVernonDavis has all the traits to become a good starting TE. He has 85 SPD, 83 STR, and 79 CTH. His AWR is 47 which will need to be improved, but other than that he is a well rounded TE.
1.15
from
CB Jonathan Joseph
Analysis: The Bears have a need at CB and they get a solid option in Jonathan Joseph. He doesn't have great physical traits, he's 5'11 with 90 SPD. He is more quick than fast as he has 95 AGI and 95 ACC. Where he makes up for that is in his AWR at 65, and 77 TKL. He's only 22 years old which is younger than a lot of the other top CBs, he should be able to grow into a reliable CB.
1.16
DE Victor Adeyanju
Analysis: The Redskins traded away DE Ty Warren, who had 12 sacks last year. This creates a clear need at the position and they get an athletic DE in Victor Adeyanju. He is 6'4 284 lbs, and has 91 SPD, he is raw as a pass rusher but has the tools to develop into an elite one.
1.17
from
TE Garrett Mills
Analysis: The Raiders have a need at TE and they get the fastest one in Garrett Mills. Mills has 92 SPD, 72 STR, 78 CTH, he's smaller for a TE at 6'1. Mills could become a mismatch as an elite receiving TE, who has a solid ceiling with his athleticism.
1.18
DE Mario Williams
Analysis: The Seahawks need another starter at DE and they get one of the youngest players in the class in Mario Williams. He's only 21 years old and has 78 SPD, 87 STR, 86 ACC. He's 300 lbs so a 4-3 team could look to move him inside, but he has the athleticism to play DE.
1.19
from
OT Marcus McNeill
Analysis: The Chiefs are a dark horse to take a QB in the 1st round, they have 3 1st round picks. They instead opt to instead take a massive tackle to protect QB Byron Leftwich. McNeill stands at 6'8 336 lbs, and has 90 PBK and 90 RBK. He should be able to start right away and be a good tackle, he has 46 SPD but makes up for it with his massive size and high blocking stats.
1.20
from
DE Jeremy Mincey
Analysis: The Cardinals got the best CB in the class with their earlier pick, and now they add a good DE to continue to beef up their defense. Mincey has 87 SPD, 84 ACC, and 65 TKL. Mincey has the ability to play 3-4 DE if a team wanted an athletic player on the inside, but he likely stays on the edge and should be a great run defender with his size.
1.21
C Nick Mangold
Analysis: The Rams have a need at center, and they got the best one in the class with Nick Mangold. Mangold has 91 PBK and 92 RBK, he lacks athleticism but makes up for it with his great blocking and will be an instant starter for whatever team lands him.
1.22
from
WR Bennie Brazzell
Analysis: The Lions could use another weapon for QB Donovan McNabb, and Brazzell would bring this team even more speed. He has 95 speed, 58 awareness, and 79 catching, he's 24 years old which could be a red flag for some teams but the Lions want to win now with McNabb and grab a great player.
1.23
from
OT Brad Butler
Analysis: The Packers will likely add multiple OL in the draft to beef up their OL to protect QB Dave Ragone. Butler has 64 SPD, 89 STR, 89 PBK, 86 RBK, an all around good tackle. He'd be able to start right away and should develop into a good starting tackle.
1.24
from
LB Tim Dobbins
Analysis: The Colts could use another LB and they get an athletic one in Tim Dobbins, Dobbins has 88 SPD, 62 AWR, 72 TKL, he'd be able to start right away and help the Colts in their pursuit to get back to the playoffs and win another Super Bowl.
1.25
WR Maurice Stovall
Analysis: Stovall has a massive range of where he could go as he's a very odd prospect. He's only 21 years old and is 6'5, which would normally end up in a WR being taken in the top 10. Stovall only has 75 SPD, which is going to cause a lot of teams to remove him from their draft board. There could be a team that likes his potential as an elite red zone threat and takes a chance on him. The Ravens could use WR help and may opt for a faster option, but they take a the big red zone threat in Stovall.
1.26
from
DT Gabe Watson
Analysis: The Patriots have one of the deepest rosters in the league, and this will be a luxury pick for them. They opt to take a unit of a player in Gabe Watson, who is 6'3 338 lbs, while also having 80 SPD and 94 STR. The Patriots likely want to get deeper on the IDL, and getting Watson allows for a developmental DT with one of the highest ceilings in the class.
1.27
from
WR Derek Hagan
Analysis: The Chiefs continue to build their offense up adding a tall and fast WR in Derek Hagan. Hagan is 6'2, and has 94 SPD, 92 ACC, and 71 CTH. He has 43 AWR which will likely prevent him from making an impact early on, but if a team is patient he could develop into a really good WR with his size and speed.
1.28
from
CB Jarrett Bush
Analysis: The Chiefs added offense with their first two picks and now grab an athletic and young CB for their secondary. Bush is 22 years old and has 95 SPD, 99 AGI, and 93 ACC. His 47 AWR will need to be improved or else opposing CBs will pick on him in zone coverage, but his physical tools are worth betting on as he can develop into a great CB in the future.
1.29
from
OT Winston Justice
Analysis: The Packers have a clear need on the OL, and will likely be selecting multiple OL in this class. They take Winston Justice here to be one of their tackles, he's 22 years old and has 94 STR, 84 PBK, and 85 RBK. He has all around solid stats, with his biggest weakness being his 42 SPD. He has all the tools to develop into a franchise tackle and help the Packers retool their OL.
1.30
from
DE Tamba Hali
Analysis: The Broncos will likely look to add another DE and they get one in Tamba Hali. He's got good size at 6'3 275 lbs, and has all around solid stats in 80 SPD, 87 STR, 67 TKL.
1.31
HB DeAngelo Williams
Analysis: The Patriots don't have any immediate needs, and make another luxury pick. HB may not be a position they are interested in with them already having HB Willis McGahee, but this is his last season under contract and it doesn't hurt to have multiple starting caliber HBs. DeAngelo Williams has 96 SPD, 94 AGI, 90 ACC, he will make a great RB for whatever team drafts him.
1.32
from
QB Brad Smith
Analysis: The Chiefs have 4 1st round picks, and they may opt to build around QB Byron Leftwich instead of replacing him. He has one year left on his contract and the Chiefs may decide to grab a QB who they can develop behind Leftwich for a season. There is no clear QB3 in this class, but Brad Smith makes a good case for it with 96 THP. He has 52 AWR and 82 THA, which make him a developmental project that not every team is going to want to undertake, but if a team is patient with him he has the potential to become a starting caliber QB.
