2006 PTF Mock Draft
This mock is a little bit of what I would do, a little bit of what I think the team should do and a little bit of I have no clue.
Pick 1.1: Carolina Panthers
MLB Demeco Ryans
6’1” / 247lbs / 91 SPD / 77 STR / 70 AWR / 99 AGI / 95 ACC
Analysis: The Panthers have declared Ryans the pick. He is a stud, no doubt and will add to a defense that is quickly becoming one of the league’s best. The problem is the offense is one of the league’s worst. I am guessing that will be the area that Carolina targets with the rest of their picks.
Pick 1.2: Arizona Cardinals
WR Brandon Marshall
6’5” / 232lbs / 97 SPD / 88 AGI / 99 ACC / 83 CTH
Analysis: The Cardinals have gone the path of adding veteran talent all over their roster this offseason and are stocked with some good draft capital to continue to add top end talent. With the acquisition of Pennington, to me Marshall is a no brainer here. Pairing him with Housh will make for a formidable duo, and give the Cards instant legitimacy in a division that is up for grabs going into next season.
Pick 1.3: Minnesota Vikings
ROLB Chad Greenway
6’3” / 237lbs / 99 SPD / 72 STR / 84 AGI / 95 ACC / 54 AWR / 86 TAK
Analysis: It has been an eventful offseason for Minnesota trading away star receiver Randy Moss for 4 1st round picks and then trading several more to acquire pick 1.5 to go with this pick here. The Vikings also dabbled in the Tom Brady talks before New England decided to keep him. I am not sure where the Vikings go from here. Ideally, getting a replacement for Moss would be at the top of the list, but this is a lackluster WR draft after Marshall. If I’m Minnesota, I’d go BPA and to me that is Chad Greenway. Depending on how he skews, he is either a stud OLB, MLB or can very easily be a high end player in the secondary where the Vikings can use a lot of help.
Pick 1.4: New York Giants
LE Mario Williams
6’6” / 300lbs / 78 SPD / 87 STR / 62 AGI / 86 ACC / 51 AWR
Analysis: The Giants were highly competitive in a number of games last year and I think they are a few pieces away from beginning to compete in that division. This is where the draft starts to get interesting for me because each team is going to have there own preferences. I like Mario Williams for the Giants here. He’s light on AGI but aside from that is an all around complete player with great size. The Giants can use a little help up front on defense and Williams would immediately step in as the top player in that unit, forming a nice tandem with Randy Starks.
Pick 1.5: Minnesota Vikings
CB Antonio Cromartie
6’2” / 210lbs / 90 SPD / 62 STR / 73 AWR / 89 AGI / 91 ACC / 71 CTH
Analysis: The Vikings again. Cromartie is a polished player that will only get better with time as he goes through rookie and sophomore progressions. He will step in as a day one starter across from Patrick Surtain and if you want can team him up with Chad Greenway at corner and form a monster tandem there at 6’2” and 6’3”. Intriguing possibilities but a pretty safe player here who will be a top CB throughout his career.
Pick 1.6: New York Jets
RT DBrickashaw Ferguson
6’6” / 310lbs / 73 SPD / 93 SPD / 62 AWR / 73 AGI / 62 ACC / 93 PBK / 92 RBK
Analysis: GM Hinch is slowly building a really solid roster in New York and doing it the right way through the draft. With two more top 10 picks this year, he has the chance to really put his mark on the team for the long haul. Ferguson is a ready made stud on the OL. He can step right in and build with young QB Alex Smith. The Jets already have some solid pieces on the OL, but you can never have too many, and there’s nothing more important for a young QB than a strong OL.
Pick 1.7: Jacksonville Jaguars
QB Vince Young
6’5” / 232lbs / 59 AWR / 97 THP / 96 THA
Analysis: If I was the Jaguars, I would be scouting every QB in this draft to ensure I am picking the right one. Without knowing the details of the private workouts, Young stands above the rest for me. His arm requires little work and with some increased awareness can become a player very quickly. If a team wants the top QB in the draft, they’ll have to get ahead of the Jags here.
Pick 1.8: New York Jets
DT Haloti Ngata
6’4” / 340lbs / 69 SPD / 92 STR / 63 AWR / 72 AGI / 77 ACC
Analysis:Continuing the theme of building through the lines, the Jets take a stud here in Haloti Ngata. He can anchor the middle of the defense with 2003 1st rounder Kenny Peterson. The Jets will have a number of athletic, big bodies up front that will be a nightmare to run against and will also have some pass rushing juice.
Pick 1.9: New Orleans Saints
DT Kyle Williams
6’1” / 303lbs / 72 SPD / 90 STR / 65 AWR / 69 AGI / 77 ACC
Analysis:To me the Saints don’t have any glaring needs here with the 9th pick. They have young players throughout their roster that are slowly coming along and progressing. The big question may be whether they see Big Ben as their long term solution at QB. If they do, then I think they just go BPA here. For me, Kyle Williams sticks out as a player that can make a real difference along the defensive line.
Pick 1.10: Cleveland Browns
CB Jonathan Joseph
5’11” / 186lbs / 90 SPD / 62 STR / 65 AWR / 95 AGI / 95 ACC / 67 CTH
Analysis: The Browns need help everywhere, I think the priority here should be adding the best talent they can to their roster. I like the idea of adding someone like Jonathan Joseph here who is a polished player at CB and depending on how he tests out in workouts, could be ready to step in as a true #1 CB in week 1 of his rookie season. Regardless, the Browns can’t go wrong with any direction with this pick. Just need to add talent.
Pick 1.11: San Diego Chargers
MLB Gerris Wilkinson
6’3” / 231lbs / 86 SPD / 85 STR / 48 AWR / 92 AGI / 88 ACC
Analysis: You can always count on the Chargers having a loaded roster and a top 15 pick in every draft. The biggest need is likely along the OL, but I can see Breck shifting some players around and addressing that need later on, and instead focusing on a flashier player here. I am going to throw one of the front 7 freaks at LB here. Depending on how these players workout, it really could be any number of them, but a move like this would allow Breck to move Gold to ROLB and start the new stud at LOLB.
Pick 1.12: Chicago Bears
CB Kelly Jennings
5’11” / 180lbs / 96 SPD / 70 STR / 54 AWR / 89 AGI / 99 ACC / 53 CTH
Analysis: The Bears have two top 15 picks and I am not really sure how since they have not made a single offseason transaction but here we are. I think they make a move here to upgrade their secondary. Jennings is a freaky athlete who is tall enough at 5’11”. He is a bit raw, but the Bears have a timeline to develop him as Aaron Rodgers enters year 2.
Pick 1.13: Jacksonville Jaguars
HB DeAngelo Williams
5’9” / 207lbs / 96 SPD / 76 STR / 64 AWR / 94 AGI / 90 ACC / 72 CTH
Analysis: The Jaguars secured their QB of the future with the 7th pick and now look to add someone to build with Young here. Williams is a do it all stud RB who is fast, strong, can catch the ball out of the backfield, can break a long play and also get tough yards. Nothing helps a young QB more than a strong OL and run game. Williams will be a stud in this league for a long time.
Pick 1.14: Washington Redskins
RE Jeremy Mincey
6’4” / 280lbs / 87 SPD / 70 STR / 50 AWR / 78 AGI / 84 ACC
Analysis: The Redskins have made some strong moves to start the offseason. They could use some talent at the DE position and I have them selecting Mincey here. This is another position where there is some talent on the surface but it will really come down to how some of these players perform in private workouts with the teams. Mincey is a player with good size and athletic profile and should be a day 1 starter at LE.
Pick 1.15: Chicago Bears
WR Greg Jennings
5’11” / 197lbs / 99 SPD / 60 STR / 59 AWR / 97 AGI / 94 ACC / 80 CTH
Analysis: The Bears are up again. Jennings is a really solid player with breakaway speed that would pair nicely with Andre Johnson and help out 2nd year QB continue to get better and build on a strong rookie campaign. The Jennings combo in round 1 for Chicago.
Pick 1.16: Washington Redskins
TE Leonard Pope
6’8” / 264lbs / 90 SPD / 62 STR / 92 AGI / 89 ACC / 70 CTH
Analysis: The Redskins are up again. This time they select an absolute specimen at the TE position. Pope is huge at 6’8” but also freakishly fast for a TE. If he validates in a private workout, this could be too good to pass up with the 16th pick. The Redskins currently have a hole at TE and Pope would help new QB David Garrard settle in nicely with his new team.
Pick 1.17: Oakland Raiders
QB Jay Cutler
6’3” / 231lbs / 54 AWR / 97 THP / 91 THA
Analysis: The Raiders took a QB last year in the first round in QB Derek Anderson but before he could get to his second season with the team traded him to the Jaguars. And before Anderson could get to his first game with the Jaguars, they traded him to the Bucs. I am not sure if the Raiders plan on resetting again at QB but they don’t currently have a strong option at the position. Cutler has a great arm, and while he needs some work on AWR will be a solid player in due time.
Pick 1.18: Seattle Seahawks
RE Victor Adeyanju
6’4” / 284lbs / 91 SPD / 77 STR / 79 AGI / 82 ACC
Analysis: I’m not entirely sure where the Seahawks will go here. DE may be an interesting place for them to look. Adeyanju is a unique player with great size, speed and strength. He could end up being a boom or bust type prospect, and whoever picks him will want to do their due diligence but if he checks the box in a workout, he could be a home run pick.
Pick 1.19: Kansas City Chiefs
MLB Tim Dobbins
6’1” / 234lbs / 88 SPD / 72 STR / 62 AWR / 84 AGI / 84 ACC
Analysis: The Chiefs are loaded with picks in the first round. It would be too difficult to pinpoint exact players but I think they have the opportunity to add some real talent on day one of the draft. If they go BPA at every pick, they will come out of the draft a much better team. Dobbins is a day one starter at MLB who is a good athlete and will make the front seven instantly better.
Pick 1.20: Arizona Cardinals
DT Johnny Jolly
6’3” / 325lbs / 69 SPD / 99 STR / 65 AGI / 68 ACC
Analysis: With their second pick of the first round, I have the Cardinals adding Jolly. Jolly is a big force in the middle who I think can anchor either a 3-4 or 4-3 defense. He is athletic enough to get into the backfield but big and strong enough to clog up run lanes. Jolly would make a lot of sense to build a defensive line around.
Pick 1.21: St. Louis Rams
CB Jarrett Bush
6’0” / 200lbs / 95 SPD / 70 STR / 47 AWR / 99 AGI / 93 ACC
Analysis: The Rams still have all of the players that make them great but are in a bit of a transition phase as Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk and Torey Holt are all on the wrong side of 30. They likely have one more chance to give it a good run with this core. Bush has a strong athletic profile and needs some development but can likely help in year one where the Rams have a need at CB, and continue to develop as part of the next Rams core.
Pick 1.22: Detroit Lions
LT Brad Butler
6’7” / 315lbs / 64 SPD / 89 STR / 59 AWR / 56 AGI / 72 ACC / 89 PBK / 86 RBK
Analysis: The Lions are a legit force with McNabb at QB and all of the talent they drafted high over the last few years. They could go any number of directions but I don’t think it is ever a bad idea to add talent to the offensive line. Butler is a solid all around player who will only get better as he gets reps.
Pick 1.23: Green Bay Packers
LT Andrew Whitworth
6’7” / 330lbs / 64 SPD / 95 STR / 45 AWR / 63 AGI / 88 ACC / 84 PBK / 79 RBK
Analysis: The Packers are in a bit of a transition. Offensive line is an area where they could really use some help and while Whitworth is a bit raw, and may not be ready to step in on day 1, he is an athletic freak at the OT position and they can afford to be a bit patient bringing him along as they move to the new era with Ragone at QB.
Pick 1.24: Indianapolis Colts
RT Guy Whimper
6’5” / 315lbs / 61 SPD / 94 STR / 54 AWR / 55 AGI / 74 ACC / 76 PBK / 85 RBK
Analysis:A new era for the Colts with QB Chris Simms taking over the reins for legend Peyton Manning. The Colts still have the talent to compete in their division and it will be interesting to see what direction they go with this pick. Another team that can use OL help, I think Whimper is a solid player to add here. There are a number of other OL who could be in consideration with these picks, and depending on how they workout could be interchangeable, but I am going to project the position here more than anything.
Pick 1.25: Baltimore Ravens
WR Brandon Lloyd
6’0” / 182lbs / 95 SPD / 80 STR / 85 AGI / 89 ACC / 79 CTH
Analysis: The Ravens are a tough team to gauge for me when making a mock. I think they could use some help at WR and while this isn’t a great WR class, I think the case can be made for someone like Brazell here who is a fast, strong target and with some progression and training camp can be a really good starting WR in this league.
Pick 1.26: New England Patriots
LOLB James Anderson
6’2” / 235lbs / 91 SPD / 77 STR / 40 AWR / 84 AGI / 92 ACC
Analysis:The Patriots have no glaring holes on their roster and zero starting positions open with 2 1st round picks so they will likely go BPA depending on how the board falls. Anderson is an athletic freak at the OLB position who with proper progression and patience can be a force in the long run. Expect the Patriots to be active in bringing players in for private workouts and also be ready to wheel and deal on draft day.
Pick 1.27: Kansas City Chiefs
WR Domenik Hixon
6’2” / 197lbs / 93 SPD / 70 STR / 90 AGI / 89 ACC / 69 CTH
Analysis: The Chiefs have 3 of the last 6 picks of the round. WR is one position that could get a look from them. Hixon is a bit raw at the position but possesses good size and speed. With time, he will develop into a starting level WR in this league and I think is worthy of a gamble at this point in the first round.
Pick 1.28: Kansas City Chiefs
RG Rob Sims
6’3” / 312lbs / 60 SPD / 90 STR / 55 AWR / 67 AGI / 70 ACC / 76 PBK / 85 RBK
Analysis: The Chiefs are up again, and this time I think they address the offensive line. Sims is a solid all around player with good size and projects to be able to play any of the positions along the front five. Getting a good player like this in the door is the first step and then you can figure out the best combination along the front once you get into training camp.
Pick 1.29: Green Bay Packers
RE Brent Hawkins
6’2” / 250lbs / 87 SPD / 77 STR / 76 AGI / 76 ACC
Analysis: Up with another pick in round 1, I think the Packers look to some help on the edge with this pick. Hawkins is on the smaller side for a defensive end but makes up for it with top end speed and solid strength. I think Hawkins can be a bit of a sleeper in this draft and if he tests well, may end up really outplaying his draft position.
Pick 1.30: Denver Broncos
TE Vernon Davis
6’3” / 248lbs / 85 SPD / 83 STR / 90 AGI / 99 ACC / 79 CTH
Analysis: AF has been lurking and quietly building a top end roster like we are used to from him. This offseason he got the opportunity to pounce on Peyton Manning and amazingly didn’t have to give up a 1st round pick to do so. This is a win now roster and I expect to the Broncos to take someone that can help them this year. AF is one of the best at scouting talent, so expect a difference maker here. Vernon Davis is a day one starter at TE and likely one of the more talented TEs in the league. He will pair very nicely with Peyton Manning and add to the vaunted Broncos attack.
Pick 1.31: New England Patriots
TE Anthony Fasano
6’4” / 258lbs / 86 PSD / 84 STR / 82 AGI / 90 ACC / 73 CTH
Analysis: Back to back TEs at the end of round one. Fasano is a solid player who is a bit raw. The Patriots have Randy McMichael at TE so they can afford to bring Fasano along slowly, but he figures to be someone that could be a real difference maker in years 2 and beyond for this team.
Pick 1.32: Kansas City Chiefs
LOLB Clint Ingram
6’2” / 240lbs / 82 SPD / 75 STR / 90 AGI / 89 ACC
Analysis: The Chiefs final pick of the first round, and one that they traded up for, giving up a 2.30 to move up less than 10 slots, an overpay by about 2 rounds. A somewhat puzzling move and with a division rival, but here they are. I have them taking another LB here to start at ROLB. Ingram is an athletic all around player who can play the run and pass. He will bring some much needed athleticism and youth to the Chiefs front seven.
