PTF Waiver Wire Excitement- Week 2 of the 29007 Season

I do not recall ever having the kind of talent available via the waiver wire heading into any past season like we will have during week 2.

Here are guys who I see that could he huge assets for teams being active heading into week 2:

1.) QB Tim Couch- 88 OVR
30 years old, 6’4”, 220# 8 year pro

Current attributes: 77 AWR, THP 92, THA 94, INJ 85, TGH 77

Career PTF stats: 1629 passes, 773 completions, 47.4 Comp %, 11,170 passing yards, 71 TD, 67 Int, 67.4 QBR

Misc: The Browns were in a bad contract with Couch from the start of the league. His cap hit was too much to simply be released and prior team management did not have the activity points for a cap hit free release. Such a touch break for the Browns to have to release him and receive no compensation. I would guess even at 30 years old, Couch would fetch at least a 2nd round pick. Two seasons ago he threw 25 TD’s and just 14 int’s. The reason I give Couch the $1 spot is due to the importance of the QB or even the backup QB position. Couch is a veteran QB with an 88 OVR so he is going to deamand a significant contract and I believe he will absolute receive multiple waiver wire offers.

Default contract: 3 years @ $15.28M w/ a signing bonus of $3.6M- year 1 @ $4.13M, year 2 @ $5.01M, year 3 @ $6.14M

2.) DT John Henderson- 91 OVR
28 years old, 6’7”, 328#, 5 year pro

Current attributes: 73 AWR, 61 SPD, 95 STR, 69 AGI, 71 ACC, 90 TAK, 94 INJ, 90 TGH

Career PTF stats: 144 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 22 sacks, 1 foreced fum, 1 fum rec

Misc: Henderson should be a beast of a DL in any defensive front. He should be able to perform an the perfect NT in ant 3-4 defense or as more of a pass rushing or complete DT in ant 43 defense. I doubt there’s a GM in the league who could say their defensive line would not be better with Henderson on it. In my opinion he could easily be swapped with QB Couch for the #1 spot. Henderson will not be signed at a bargain since waiver wire claims are handeled at default contract $’s and his OVR of 91 will demand a pretty significant contract. I would imagine he will certainly receive waiver wire claims even with the requested amount.

Default contract: 3 years @ $19.04M w/ a signing bonus of $3.72M- year 1 @ $5.1M, year 2 @ $6.24M, year 3 @ $7.7M

3.) QB David Carr- 80 OVR
28 years old, 6’3”, 215, 5 year pro

Current attributes: 75 AWR, 90 THP, 85 THA, 78 INJ, 85 TGH

Career PTF stats: 371 passes, 158 completions, 42.5 comp %, 2341 passing yards, 13 TD, 16 Int, 57.6 QBR

Misc: Carr is cleanly below Couch but I believe he is or could be one of the best backup QB’s in the league. He is also only 28 so he is still eligible for training camp next year. The Texans were in a similar situation as the Browns were with Couch, stuck with a horrible contract. What’s nice about Carr is that whether through training camp, preseason progression or even standard regular season progression, if he were to play can have his attributes improve before regression begins. His 80 OVR makes him be an affordable waiver wire edition, unless someone over pays for him.

Default contract: 3 years @ $6.07M w/ a signing bonus of $1.02M- year 1 @ $1.66M, year 2 @ $2M, year 3 @ $2.41M

4.) MLB Heath Farwell- 79 OVR
24 years old, 6’0”, 235#, 2 year probably

Current attributes: 73 AWR, 78 SPD, 77 STR, 78 AGI, 82 ACC, 85 TAK, 63 CTH, 72 JMP, 86 INJ, 85 TGH

Career PTF stats: 18 tackles, 1 forced fum, 1 Int, 1 deflection

Misc: Farwell’s #4 ranking may surprise some GM’s. He may not even cause some GM’s to view him but let me explain why I have him here: First off, he’s only 24 which means he could be signed to a 5 year deal and see the contract be fulfilled before regression. As far as attributes goes his TAK is at 85 so really, it will be perfectly fine his whole career so any future progression could be applied to AWR, which is already at 73. While 73 may not sound great, he is a guy who has never been a starter yet has 70+ AWR along with nearly 80’s in SPD, STR & AGI plus has 80+ in ACC. His combo of 60+ CTH and 70+ JMP means he can add deflections or int’s if he is around the ball. The downside might be his 6 foot frame however I think Farwell could start for some teams, especially at mLB2 in a 3-4 defense. Even if he is signed as a MLB3 for a 3-4 defensive team or a MLB2 on a 43 team, he is a player who will put in valuable snaps and can be counted on if your starter goes down or needs a breather. His 79 OVR means he can be signed for a reasonable amount.

Default contract: 3 years @ $6.77M w/ a signing bonus of $680K- Year 1 @ $2.01M, year 2 @ $2.25M, Year 3 @ $2.51M

5.) RB Tiki Barber- 86 OVR
32 years old, 5’10”, 200#, 10 year pro

Current attributes: 88 AWR, 88 SPD, 68 STR, 87 AGI, 90 ACC, 78 CAR, 88 BTK, 72 STA, 84 INJ, 80 TGH

Career PTF stats: 982 rushes, 3967 rushing yards, 4.0 yards per carry, 18 TD, 12 fum, 26 catches, 391 rec yards

Misc: Tiki is into full regression at 32 years old but he will help whatever team who lands him. The Giants were unable to trade him due to his high salary but I expect someone will land tiki whether it’s via the waiver wire, vet minimum or via standard free agency in week 3. His default contract might scare most GM’s off.

Default contract: 3 years @ $12.41M w/ a signing bonus of $2.43K- Year 1 @ $3.33M, year 2 @ $4.06M, Year 3 @ $5.02M

6.) LE Patrick Kerney- 92 OVR
31 years old, 6’5”, 273#, 9 year pro- 1x PTF Pro Bowler

Current attributes: 80 AWR, 73 SPD, 84 STR, 73 AGI, 81 ACC, 84 TAK, 91 INJ, 93 TGH

Career PTF stats: 174 tackles, 31 tackles for loss, 50 sacks, 4 forced fum, 1 fum receiver

Misc: Kerney is 9th all time in the PTF with 50 sacks. Even though he enters his 2nd year of regression, he still has 70+ in SPD, STR and AGI plus 80+ in TAK and ACC. This is a guy who can get 10+ sacks this season and maybe next season too. His OVR might demand a contract that is too high for some GM’s meaning Kerney might slip down to vet minimum or week 3 standard free agency.

Default contract: 3 years @ $17.99M w/ a signing bonus of $4.41K- Year 1 @ $4.87M, year 2 @ $5.89M, Year 3 @ $7.23M

7.) SS Darren Sharper- 90 OVR
32 years old, 6’2”, 210#, 10 year pro, 1x PTF Pro Bowler

Current attributes: 96 AWR, 82 SPD, 59 STR, 82 AGI, 83 ACC, 69 TAK, 91 STA, 89 INJ, 90 TGH

Career PTF stats: 223 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 2 forced fum, 13 Int, 58 deflections, 19 ctha

Misc: Sharper has had a great PTF career but in my opinion, it is not yet over. He is coming off a year with 74 tackles and 6 int’s. His 90 Ovr might mean a decent contract but the SS position usually does not demand a ton of $ when compared to other positions.

Default contract: 3 years @ $8.68M w/ a signing bonus of $870K- Year 1 @ $2.54M, year 2 @ $2.89M, Year 3 @ $3.76M

8.) RE Simeon Rice- 85 OVR
33 years old, 6’5”, 268#, 11 year probably

Current attributes: 94 AWR, 74 SPD, 74 STR, 73 AGI, 76 ACC, 77 TAK, 84 STA, 88 INJ, 93 TGH

Career PTF stats: 176 tackles, 33 tackles for loss, 29 sacks, 5 forced fum, 3 fum rec, 1 int, 6 deflections

Misc: I really like Rice. He has great size and an AWR of 94. I think he can still play and provide just not quality play but all pro type of play, especially at RE.

Default contract: 3 years @ $10.63M w/ a signing bonus of $2.16K- Year 1 @ $2.84M, year 2 @ $3.48M, Year 3 @ $4.31M

9.) CB Renaldo Hill- 83 OVR
29 years old, 5’11”, 194#, 6 year probably

Current attributes: 81 AWR, 88 SPD, 59 STR, 91 AGI, 90 ACC, 63 CTH, 92 JMP, 59 TAK, 92 STA, 94 INJ, 78 TGH

Career PTF stats: 199 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 7 int’s, 96 deflections, 111 ctha

Misc: Hill, at 29 years can still provide meaningfully play. While his SPD is 90> he has AWR of 80+ with 90+ AGI and ACC. His 83 OVR will not demand a big contract. I believe Hill could be a very good PTF nickle CB and a great dime CB if a team is in a good enough position to add him.

Default contract: 3 years @ $11.02M w/ a signing bonus of $183M- Year 1 @ $3.02M, year 2 @ $3.82M, Year 3 @ $4.3M

10.) FS Greg Wesley- 90 OVR
29 years old, 6’2”, 200#, 7 year pro- 1x PTF Pro Bowler

Current attributes: 87 AWR, 84 SPD, 67 STR, 85 AGI, 87 ACC, 67 CTH, 88 JMP, 71 TAK, 90 STA, 93 INJ, 88 TGH

Career PTF stats: 210 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 1 forced fum, 1 fun rec, 13 int’s, 69 deflections, 22 catches allowed plus he has a safety

Misc: Wesley does not have the ideal SPD at 84 however he has nearly 90 AWR which will balance that out. I believe he can start at FS right now for many teams. His 90 Ovr will demand a decent contract though.

Default contact: 3 years @ $8.48M w/ a signing bonus of $1.74K- Year 1 @ $2.27M, year 2 @ $2.78M, Year 3 @ $3.43M

11.) MLB Andra Davis- 83 OVR
29 years old, 6’1”, 255#, 5 year probably

Current attributes: 78 AWR, 78 SPD, 80 STR, 76 AGI, 83 ACC, 86 TAK, 85 STA, 90 INJ, 85 TGH

Career PTF stats: 220 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 1 forced fum, 2 fum rec, 6 int’s, 29 deflections, 26 ctha

Misc: Davis a a MLB whom may not jump out at you but I believe he is someone who should at least be a MLB2. With SPD, AWR & AGI near 80 and STR, ACC & TAK at 80+, I am convinced that he will provide high quality play.

Default contract: 3 years @ $10.2M w/ a signing bonus of $1.62M- Year 1 @ $2.81M, year 2 @ $3.36M, Year 3 @ $4.03M

12.) RG Damion McIntosh- 83 OVR
30 years old, 6’4”, 325#, 7 year pro, 1x PTF Pro Bowler

Current attributes: 76 AWR, 49 SPD, 91 STR, 53 AGI, 59 ACC, 84 PBK, 92 RBK, 89 INJ, 83 TGH

Career PTF stats: 232 pancakes, 14 sacks allowed, 16.5 pc/sk %

Misc: In my mind, McIntosh is simply a veteran OL who can still play. At 83 OVR his contract is reasonable.

Default contract: 3 years @ $8.56M w/ a signing bonus of $1.71K- Year 1 @ $2.29M, year 2 @ $2.81M, Year 3 @ $3.43M

13.)LG Zach Piller- 81 OVR
31 years old, 6’5”, 321#, 8 year pro

Current attributes: 75 AWR, 47 SPD, 89 STR, 56 AGI, 55 ACC, 89 PBK, 89 RBK, 78 INJ, 69 TGH

Career PTF stats: 218 pancakes, 23 sacks allowed, 9.48 pc/sk %

Misc: Same as above, I simply believe Piller can still be a starting G and with 81 OVR, his contract is very reasonable.

Default contract: 3 years @ $4.29M w/ a signing bonus of $1.23M- Year 1 @ $1.68M, year 2 @ $2.05M, Year 3 @ $2.54M

14.) WR Dez White- 78 OVR
28 years old, 6’1”, 215, 7 year pro

Current attributes: 65 AWR, 91 SPD, 58 STR, 86 AGI, 90 ACC, 80 CTH, 90 JMP, 92 STA, 93 INJ, 70 TGH

Career PTF stats: 103 catches, 1765 rec yards, 4 TD’s

Misc: White is under 30 years old, 6’1” with 90+ SPD and ACC and 80 CTH which means he will be on a PTF roster soon. I see him as a perfect WR3 who could even play as WR1 when/if needed. His OVR means you can get him for a reasonable amount.

Default contract: 3 years @ $1.29M w/ a signing bonus of $680K- Year 1 @ $2.15M, year 2 @ $2.57M, Year 3 @ $3.1M

15.) CB Ahmed Plummer- 79 OVR
31 years old, 6’0”, 191#, 7 year pro

Current attributes: 87 AWR, 84 SPD, 55 STR, 85 AGI, 84 ACC, 60 CTH, 85 JMP, 60 TAK, 86 STA, 83 INJ, 78 TGH

Career PTF stats: 161 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 2 forced fum, 3 fum rec, 6 inmts, 3 defensive TD’s, 1 safety, 50 deflections, 99 ctha

Misc: Plummer’s SPD and ACC have tacken hits due to regression but with 87 AWR, he needs to be on a roster as at least a nickel CB.

Default contract: 3 years @ $9.76M w/ a signing bonus of $2.42M- Year 1 @ $2.25M, year 2 @ $2.57M, Year 3 @ $2.94M

Now here’s Chat GPT’s opinion on the top 15 potential waiver wire possibilities:

I went through all 40 players in the screenshot, and I'm looking at this specifically through the lens of your Madden 08 CPU-vs-CPU league, your preference for a 3-4 defense, your emphasis on size/height, and the roster you've been building. One important point: I’m not simply ranking by OVR. For your league, I’m giving extra weight to the attributes that should translate well in CPU simulation—particularly AWR, SPD/ACC, STR, TAK, size, and positional fit. Madden 08 ratings do place significant importance on physical attributes and awareness, and the game’s defensive-line ratings illustrate how valuable strength/awareness can be for interior defenders.
My Top 15 Week 2 Waiver Claims

1 John Henderson DT 91 Outstanding 3-4 fit. 6'7", 328 lbs, 95 STR, 90 TAK, 69 AWR. Massive NT-type body with elite strength. He would immediately give your front seven more power.
2 Patrick Kerney LE 92 Highest OVR available and a very good 3-4 DE body at 6'5", 273. 84 STR, 80 AWR, 73 AGI, 81 ACC. Age 31 is the drawback, but he's a major immediate upgrade.
3 Darren Sharper SS 90 Fantastic CPU safety. 96 AWR, 83 SPD, 83 ACC, 82 AGI and 83 CTH. At 6'2", 210 he's also a very good-sized safety. Age 32 keeps him from #1.
4 Greg Wesley FS 90 Excellent all-around FS: 84 SPD, 87 AWR, 85 AGI, 87 ACC, 71 TAK and 6'2", 208. This is a very strong CPU safety profile.
5 Robert Royal FB 91 Don't overlook him because he's a FB. 6'4", 257, 81 STR and 73 AGI. He's a massive FB who could be excellent in a run-oriented offense. Big upgrade over an 83 OVR FB.
6 Andra Davis MLB 83 Excellent 3-4 ILB candidate. 6'1", 255, 80 STR, 78 SPD, 76 AWR, 78 AGI, 82 ACC and 85 TAK. Very balanced player.
7 Damion McIntosh RG 83 6'4", 325 lbs, 91 STR, 76 AWR, 92 RBK and 84 PBK. That's a very intriguing CPU offensive-line player. Particularly valuable if you're trying to get more out of your running game.
8 Reinaldo Hill CB 83 One of my favorite sleepers here. 5'11", 194, but 88 SPD, 91 AGI, 90 ACC, 81 AWR and 92 JMP. That's an outstanding athletic profile for a CB.
9 Simeon Rice RE 85 6'5", 268 with 74 SPD, 74 STR, 94 AWR, 73 AGI and 76 ACC. Age 33 is a serious concern, but the combination of size/AWR makes him very attractive for a 3-4 front.
10 Tiki Barber HB 86 88 SPD, 90 ACC, 87 AGI, 88 AWR, 78 CAR. That's a very good CPU RB profile. At 5'10", 200 he's undersized compared with McGahee, but the athleticism is excellent.
11 Marshall Faulk HB 85 81 SPD, 83 ACC, 82 AGI, 89 AWR, 79 CAR and 88 JMP. His 34 age is the major problem, but if you needed RB depth immediately, he's still extremely talented.
12 Mike Karney FB 83 6'1", 260, 72 STR, 61 AWR, 65 AGI/ACC and 91 RBK. Not nearly as flashy as Royal, but that 91 RBK makes him interesting for your ground game.
13 Stephen Gostkowski K 85 23 years old, 87 KPW, 94 KAC, 46 SPD. He's an excellent long-term kicker and is probably the best combination of age + kicking ability on the board.
14 Casey Rabach C 79 6'4", 301 lbs, 85 STR, 70 AWR, 86 PBK, 86 RBK. His OVR isn't impressive, but those blocking numbers make him a legitimate offensive-line depth/upgrade candidate.
15 Ellis Wyms RE 82 6'3", 279, 81 STR, 74 AWR, 72 AGI, 75 ACC and 76 TAK. A very solid 3-4 DE body, and considerably younger than some of the higher-rated alternatives.

A few players just missed
Josh Norman — FB, 80: 6'2", 236 with 78 SPD/ACC and 78 CAR. Good player, but Royal/Karney are more attractive.

Gus Scott — SS, 79: 85 SPD, 86 ACC, 87 AGI, 66 AWR, 84 TAK. He's actually a pretty interesting athletic safety, but the low AWR keeps him outside my top 15.

Heath Farwell — MLB, 79: 78 SPD, 82 ACC, 73 AWR, 78 STR and 79 TAK. Very respectable 3-4 depth.

Fabian Washington — CB, 76: This is the big sleeper if you care heavily about speed. 87 SPD, 86 ACC, 87 AGI and 89 JMP. His 54 STR and 65 AWR hurt him, but he's only 25. I wouldn't be surprised if you ultimately prefer him over some of the players ranked 12–15
