Bucs hoping to repeat 2004 success |
After a somewhat surprising 2004 campaign, the Bucs have re-loaded with the hopes of repeating as division champs. They hope to be able to build on the success from 2004 and leverage it into some playoff wins in 2005. The Bucs were able to secure the #2 seed in the NFC last year, but disappointingly lost their first playoff game to the Rams. The offensive core returns in 2005 with Bledsoe continuing his starting role at QB with both sophomore stars Chris Perry and Rashaun Woods returning at HB and WR respectively. Perry hopes to continue his run from last year which was ended prematurely with an injury. Woods started off a bit slow but came on strong at the end of the year to end up 2nd in receiving behind rookie of the year Bernard Berrian. Perry still ended up 2nd in rookie rushing despite missing half the season with injury, he was on pace to contend for rookie of the year when he went down.
On the offensive side, we hope to clean up Bledsoe's penchant for throwing interceptions while continuing with his positive stats. The offensive line was surprising to many across the league for how well they performed, and we hope to continue that success with the addition of a couple of solid rookies at OT. On the defensive side of the ball, the biggest question marks are in the linebacker corps. The middle in particular will need to step up early to help new faces progress. This will be a spot that we look to improve throughout the season.
Special teams was a spot that I think hurt us a lot last year, in particular our punter/kickoff specialist. His lower accuracy really hurt us with many short punts out of bounds and a handful of kickoffs that sailed out of bounds setting up our opponents with really good field position in some key moments. This wasn't evident when looking at the stats, but when watching games live it was painfully obvious that this was an area to focus. We put a lot of work into progressing his accuracy in training camp and during progression periods to hopefully have him in a good spot to start the season. |
