Overview
Defense is young and centered around the LBs who have the better average. Quite obvious you would say in a 3-4 but you wouldn’t expect that form guys this young. The PTF drafts in the last two years had a shitload of talented LBs and that was the perfect time to switch to a 3-4 in KC.
The secondary is also good but the average lacks of AWR and SPD. This due to veterans like Warfield and Bartee being out of KC, and by 2 rookie safeties who has under 90 speed (85 and 87) and rookie AWR. Second year CB Jimmy Williams has excellent physical traits but still is low on AWR to equilibrate the safeties. Only Tillman is hitting his prime but still hasn’t reached 90+ AWR (but he started very low and that’s a positive sign for the rest of the secondary.
That’s why it is really understandable that the Chiefs jumped on RE Courtney Brown for a trade with a lot of pass defense in mind : with a young secondary, the pass rush needs to hit really fast and strong, above all if the opposing offense wants to play the long ball. If Brown plays the RE like Warren did LE last season, there won’t be much a problem.
So : this defense is young and maybe exposed to the long ball, but it sure can hit you in the mouth.

Offense is much older, and that was by designed, notably on the right side of the OL to protect Lefty more than years before, and in the WR room, where starters 1 and 2 are two proven 30 years old veteran in Plaxico Buress and T.J. Houshmanzadeh. Thus, the AWR, CTH is much more improved and that will help Lefty notably on some errant throws he makes from time to time.
The OL has gained much more AWR and PBK and RBK average, notably on the right side with the two veterans, but also for RBK and PBK at LT with Bridges.
The only young gun here is second year LG (previously LT) Kevin Boothe who notably showed he can handle the job as well as anyone else in the league.
The X factor will be HB Cedric Benson who will start in stead of Travis Henry delt to the Browns. HE is not as accomplished, notably at CAR and BTK, but a better OL will help him burst through the holes.

All in all, the Chiefs did this offseason what they it is needed : consolidate the defense while rejuvenating, and give a better OL and more proven WRs to Lefty.

Chiefs updates #2
The Chiefs are now in full new season mode after wheeling, dealing, signing and drafting.
They made some moves and some splashing as we did the recap in the last article (); but there weren’t finished yet before the draft.

TRADES
#1: Chiefs sent WR Marcus Maxwell to the Redskins for Saints 3rd
Maxwell was an odd man out since the Chiefs had an agreement with the Cardinals (more on that later on). Maxwell did good enough but not to warrant him a mid-term option in the rotation. The Redskins needed a capable WR with low enough salary and the Chiefs were looking to get a third. Deal done.

#2: Chiefs send Chiefs 2nd to the Ravens for OT Jonathan Ogden
Since trading Clabo away, the Chiefs were in the market for an OT capable to play RT. They were looking for a veteran with high AWR and secure PBK and RBK. At first, free agency was the main goal to acquire one, but when Ogden came on the table, it was a no brainer. Ogden is capable and still very good even at 33, but his cap hit is tremendous. No problem for the Chiefs who had at the time 30 million dollars in the cap room bank.
Maybe hefty for some pundits, but hey: I don’t think they care what you say!

#3: Chiefs send HB Travis Henry + WR Rasheed Marshall + RE Bryce Fisher to the Browns for RE Courtney Brown
Brown was a cap hit hell for the Browns, and even if DT Attiyah Ellison played very well at RE out of his natural DT position, an upgrade was still in the minds of the front office. When Browns was put on the trade block, they gunned immediately because their cap room could swallow Brown’s salary.
They sure sent HB Henry – whom they were trying to deal since the start of the off-season – and a promising young WR in Marshall, but that is worth a gamble. Marshall was decent enough but not progressing quickly enough to the liking. Moreover, he was to be the slot WR and was being disgruntled about that. So off he goes.
And now the Chiefs are salivating with their front seven and their DL! How do you deal with Brown and Warren at the same time?

#4: Chiefs send DT Kevin Williams + Cowboys 3rd to the Cardinals for WR T.J. Houshmanzadeh
Kevin Williams was designed as MEFA solely in the purpose of this trade. Williams was not happy of being relegated to DT #2 and to play in a 3-4 defense which saw a rooking starting at NT. Williams was thought to play RE but camp decided otherwise. Instead of keeping a locker room cancer, they decided they should put him on the trade block even if it needed to design him as MEFA.
The Chiefs in turn got T.J. Houshmanzadeh, who would give a serious veteran and talented duo to Lefty with Buresss. He had an amazing year in the desert and look to replicate that in Kansas City.

FREE AGENCY Rd 1
The Chiefs inked LT Jeremy Bridges off the hands of the Giants.
Bridges offers a serious deal of physical attributes and skills at only 26 years old :

OVRSPDSTRAWRAGIACCCTHCARJMPBTKTAKTHPTHAPBKRBKKPWKACSTAINJIMPTGHKR
8371946561722320182028253989892312789360830

The Chiefs are more than happy to have him to close the bookend. With that, 2nd year OL Kevin Boothe switch to LG where, despite a very good rookie season at LT, he is more suited.
With that move, the Chiefs had totally booked the OL just before the draft, and that gave them enough flexibility.

THE DRAFT
1.32 - SS Aaron Rouse – Virginia Tech / 6’4” & 223 lbs.

OVRSPDSTRAWRAGIACCCTHCARJMPBTKTAKTHPTHAPBKRBKKPWKACSTAINJIMPTGHKR
738566588787685788356220232031161770920939

The Chiefs were enamored with his size, TKL decent AWR and CTH ability. The downside : he skewed down at SPD, AGI and ACC. But that’s the price of the game when you can’t be present draft day to use some PW. Nonetheless, there’s nothing not workable with TC, rookie and sophomore progression. Despite this, he will be the starter over 3rd year James Sanders who after 2 years has not shown enough progression ; moreover, that his lack of size has made him sometimes a liability.

4.27 - MLB Buster Davis – Florida State / 5’9” & 251 Lbs.

OVRSPDSTRAWRAGIACCCTHCARJMPBTKTAKTHPTHAPBKRBKKPWKACSTAINJIMPTGHKR
718274627989542462327921251611362999880921

A lot of thinking in this one !
First, at 5’9” that’s very short for a MLB ; then, his under 80 AGI was also a flag for the GM. But, after the PW – same stats as shown here – the GM put aside his hard stoned convictions and decided that at 4.27 for a starting MLB #2 in a 3-4 defense, there is a lot to like and to try. With 251lbs and 74 STR, he won’t be bullied, his TKL is already solid, and his ACC is excellent. Lacks some speed to the liking, but that’s still something quite good to start with

5.13 - SS Michael Johnson – Arizona / 6’2” & 207 lbs.

OVRSPDSTRAWRAGIACCCTHCARJMPBTKTAKTHPTHAPBKRBKKPWKACSTAINJIMPTGHKR
698749628790484484226810292719382887990885

The Chiefs were also looking in this draft to find a new starter because oft-injured Eric Pruitt is now definitely not the long-term solution. So, the Chiefs after a PW decided to draft Johnson who in the 5th round – except for speed – is exactly Pruitt but with no durability concerns. Same as Rouse, speed is workable.
Other concern : his CTH ability which may decide the team to play him at SS. But then at FS, the team prefers speed and he has more than Rouse. Camp decision on this

5.24 - RG Cameron Stephenson – Rutgers / 6’4” & 341 lbs.

OVRSPDSTRAWRAGIACCCTHCARJMPBTKTAKTHPTHAPBKRBKKPWKACSTAINJIMPTGHKR
725496545666192326341425167881252878840995

After setting up the starting OL, the Chiefs where to draft the depth, and in the fifth round they found that RG – who will be changed to LG – with very good upside. Considering regression, he is already old at 24, but he is no long-term investment, and a swing OG because he can also back-up the center spot with his skills.

6.13 - ROLB Nick Roach – Northwestern / 6’1” & 234 lbs.

OVRSPDSTRAWRAGIACCCTHCARJMPBTKTAKTHPTHAPBKRBKKPWKACSTAINJIMPTGHKR
668077438587593863356530171413313184870922

The Chiefs ran out of PW and they didn’t like his TKL ; but in the sixth round you don’t do the “fine bouche” and you take what you have and pray a little bit. And that did enough for a back-up OLB who may run out of steam sideline to sideline.
Not spectacular, but with his first and agility the Chiefs may find some use in some packages.

6.27 - CB Jonathan Wade – Tennessee / 5’11” & 198 lbs.

7388505590916344842376241220221715728008171

Another leaper faith fishing I the dark. Excellent starting tKL material, but he skewed down in speed. His AWR is not bad in the 6th round and for a depth CB that is fine. Probably 6th CB or positioned against a TE because the slot is out of reach for him with his lack of speed.

7.06 - C Samson Satele – Hawaii / 6’3” & 300 lbs.

OVRSPDSTRAWRAGIACCCTHCARJMPBTKTAKTHPTHAPBKRBKKPWKACSTAINJIMPTGHKR
675092495170183011382623187579272358840872

Depth pick at C. Not bad apart his first step, nothing particular.

7.19 - WR Johnnie Lee Higgins – UTEP / 5’11” & 185 lbs.

OVRSPDSTRAWRAGIACCCTHCARJMPBTKTAKTHPTHAPBKRBKKPWKACSTAINJIMPTGHKR
7491605285898034826925191315302115928909913

Another depth pick who ended up decent after the skew. No world beater, but against CB #4 or #5 or #6 could cause some problems. Lacks size, but his 80 CTH compensate that.

Chiefs updates
Here we go in the thick of it! The period that will define or not the season to come.

The Chiefs have plenty of cap space and are looking to do the moves to push them forward in the division and more.
Some players want out and some would move for strategic reasons. Others will not be kept. Here are what the Chiefs did so far.

WILL BE LET TESTING THE MARKET

- RG Jeb Terry: situational and roster filler. No future as a starter
- CB Wiliam Bartee: Bartee is on the wrong side of 30 and his skills albeit good for a safety spot will surely not be a Chiefs, because the front office doesn't want to spend AP point to move him to safety
- CB Hank Poteat: same situation as Jeb Terry
- Eric Warfield: much the same as Bartee
- SS Tony Dixon: same as Jeb Terry
- LG Kendrick Vincent: serviceable back up, but the team won't go in bidding war to retain his services
- Kwame Harris has great size but limited skills. Was primary used as a guard backup and 3rd TE. Didn't prove much for the team to give him a new contract
-LOLB Corey Jenkins: same Jeb Terry
- WR Arnold Jackson: his speed is his skill but never showed it well enough in a Chiefs uniform
- K Jay Feely: Would have been ME, but the Chiefs are going to a different way. Nonetheless the Chiefs will do to try to sign him back
- LG Mo Collins: MO Collins has been decent enough but he needs a strong support on the left side. If he wants to come back as a back-up, why not but nothing else
- C Chukky Okobi: maybe has a better future in horror movies, but not as a Chiefs

The Chiefs will also let DT Kevin Williams test the waters, but they keep the option to match or not as they designed him for the Match Eligible process.

RESIGNING

Pending paper works with the agent, the Chiefs are resigning Pro Bowler LE Ty Warren to a 4 years contract to keep him as a Chiefs. Despite some concerns by some about trading for him, he responded by his best year in the league and that as a 3-4 LE. HE is the 2006 sack leader in the league; no small feat as a 3-4 defender not being a LB. After being in his 4 team in 4 years in the league, he now can settle for good in a home

RESTRUCTURES

This is not an offseason move, but the Chiefs QB Byron Leftwich to 7 years with a 31.45M base salary and 4.34M in bonus. Lefty showed serious improvement with limited WR corp. Even if erratic and gunslinger at time, that was the right move. Now is the time to give him better weapons.

They also restructured LOLB Derrick Johnson who is a Pro Bowler for the first time in his career. The contract is for 7 years’ worth 28.09m in base salary and 2.31M in bonus. Cheap as hell for an 88 SPD, 89 AGI and 89 ACC LOLB who can cover and rush and play the run. He likes KC and his bargain of a contract shows he wants to remain a Chiefs for long.

TRADES

The Chiefs first also wanted to restructure RT Tyson Clabo, but the disgruntled player showed no sign of signing anything. Before risking to let him go for free, and without wanting to have a locker room distraction, they decided to put him on the block. And as so the Eagles traded 1.26 this draft and their 2008 third for Clabo and 2008 Chiefs 7th.
We can't say the Chiefs lose a sure machine because his RT play left to be desired. He has skills but so far it didn't translate enough for the Chiefs to lower their expectations.

They also traded TE Crumpler to the Cardinals for Veteran RG Mike Rosenthal. HE was available after the Cards traded for RG Randy Thomas. He is a fine stop Gap with better skills and AWR than Kendrick Lewis. He is what the Chiefs were looking to upgrade their RG position.

Last but not least, the Chiefs traded with a division rival - not their custom attitude - but when you have to do something, you just do.
They traded to SD MLB Kendrell Bell, Chiefs third and Chiefs 4th this draft for Patriots 5th and Titans 6th this year and WR Plaxico Buress.
Bell was excellent as a second MLB in the 3-4 defense installed this year. Since becoming a Chiefs in 2004, he was the anchor of the defense, and it is not with some sadness that the team had to depart with him. But truth be told, D'Qwell Jackson is the future and he knew it. Bell was on the fence of asking for a trade, and he won't been resigned in 2008 when his contract would have been up.

Plaxico Buress nonetheless fixes a problematic WR room. Their best receiver is Rasheed Marshall who is still being groomed - and still lacks CTH skills -, and their second best is Albert Johnson who is more a gadget player who plays better when moved around or in the slot. The Chiefs did trade for Marcus Maxwell in 2006 to put more size, but whether on contested catches or run blocking he still got manhandled and didn't prove to be a sure number 2. That's why Buress comes in. His run blocking is strong, and even if he won't let you frettle in your underwears with his move, good luck to harass him and to contest catches. His 88 AWR and 84 CTH make him the best WR in the room and the go to guy on 3rd downs, in the red zone (where the Chiefs were deficient in scoring TDs) or to give space to Marshall as Buress will surely demand double coverage. And he is the typical player you need to call on defense zone schemes.

MORE NOTES

In more notes, congratulations to the Chiefs 3 Prow Bowler in 2006. As mentioned above, there are LE Ty Warren and LOLB Derrick Johnson, but also rookie ROLB Clint Ingram. Ingram is the first Chiefs rookie to go to a Prow Bowl since GM Ratajczak took the helm. At loss at the start of the season, in the end he played like a savvy veteran. He is already very good and what is amazing is that the roof is still high!

WHAT COMES NEXT?

The Chiefs will look to help even more QB Lefty. As so they will transition him to a pocket passer using the AP they initially wanted to use to restructure Clabo.
With the moves done and the needs, the Chiefs ought to look for a second MLB, another OG and a RT. FS is also in question as talented but not healthy enough Eric Pruitt has yet to give the promises the Chiefs had in him.
And with a first now - as they traded theirs last offseason to acquire Ty Warren - there are some teams who are interested in it. What the Chiefs would do, is still to be seen

Chiefs 2006 Player review
Now that the season has ended, and teh staff is focused on the enxt and the offseason, time to look at what the starters did with a dive into their stats.

Rookies
We will be focusing only on those with significative snaps.

S1

First of all, the Chiefs draft was focused on defense with the 4 first rounds picks being on defense. The idea : talent and 3-4 personnel.
At that the Chiefs nailed it, as the last articles pointed out with the defense rankings. There were some natural misshapps (the Juggernaut Broncos for instance) and the fact that not many TO were obtained or forced.

This said this is a master class led by Ingram and Jackson who are both in top 4 rookies in TKL. No small feat in a 3-4 defense specially for Jackson who played alongside veteren Kendrell Bell who until the 2006 season had the TKL record in a season with 134.
Jackson is even in top 10 rookies for Ints with 3 knowing the top rookie has 6. Ingram and Jolly are in the top 10 rookies in sacks with respectively 8 and 7. That's impressive for Jolly playing a NT position asked to clog the middle and let the LBs do the job. He even had an Int !!!!!!

What is to like about Ingram and Jackson is that they can both play the pass coverage, the run and pass rush effectively. They don't boast the skills of say Ryans, but they definately are as a sure thing as him as players.

On the secondary side, Jimmy Williams has a decent season with 3 Ints (in top 10 rookies) of which 1 pick six. His AWR has shown, above all on one one one gainst speedy and agile WR or against veteran with the experience to move him around. But otherwise he fine rookie season on the same page as the rookie one by Charles Tillman.

On offense Boothe was a Gamble at LT, forced by the circumstances and cap reason. He did very goog for a 4th round pick with limited LG support. Albeit specific moves, he has gained this spot for the future to come.

FB Thomas has a correct season. Not much involved, wether on blocking, running or receiving. But what the stats don't tell is that when his number is called, he responded. Not bad for a converted TE who has never played FB until now.

2nd year and vets
Same as above, we look into players with significant snaps.

S2

On defense, same thing as the rookie : it was very good except TOs. Tillman has stil problems with catching a ball but when he did this season they all went back to the house. Bell was himself, even if playing in a 3-4 sharing duties with D'Qwell JAckson. That reminded him his days in Pittsburgh, and even if he came to the Chiefs to play in a 4-3 defense, he was happy to go back to a 3-4 and he didn't loose a step versus a 4-3 ; on the contrary.

Derrick Jonhson has definitely a good season despite a change in his role. HE did thrive last year when the Chiefs experimented a 3-4 in the end of the season in Patriots GP, but this year playing mostly Jets D, the Chiefs asked him to be more on support on coverage to Jimmy Williams on zone or to be in charge of covering the HB or the TE. This said, with 11 sacks, he is not far from the PTF sack leader of 2006, who is Chiefs LE Ty Warren.

Ty Warren is definitely the best trade so far in the Chiefs PTF history. Many pundits said this was an overpaying but now they can eat their crows !
The Chiefs defense wouldn't be what it was in 2006 without him. He is the sack leader in 2006 in the league playing a 3-4 LE ! I don't remember that in PTF or in SFL before (but sure Apollo will dig the stat that contradicts that XD). Rookie NT Jolly and him were creating nightmares to offensive lines. And even RE Ellison, a DT played out of position) had 6 sacks. The front 3 was really a "pick your poison" kind of DL.

The safeties were good but still lack polishing. There is a need of upgrade there above all at FS because despite some talent, Eric Pruitt keeps going to the blue tent and missing time.

On offense, Lefty had his best season as a QB, approaching nearly 4000 yards. He is still nonethelss erratic and can have fantatstic games and others where you ask for the punter to play in is stead. Still forcing too much throws or missing easy ones he also had to delt with an OL on the left where Tyson Clabo had a bad year with over 10 sacks allowed. After three years at OT (2 on the left side and 1 on the right) it is time to move him to guard probably.

The Wr were quite complementary, and that was by design because none is WR #1 material, and because Lefty was coached to progress on progression. Moreover, the GP where designed to give him more than 1 safe blankets.

The running side is ok, and despite efforts on GP and personnel, the PTF Chiefs are till not able to developp a decent running game. There are some flashed at times, but now it appears the Chiefs need a bruising HB who can shred tackles. Both Henry and Benson are not that. On the positive side, Benson is a fine second punch.

Conclusionss
When you look the team stats (previous article) and the players stats you defintaley see the trend. Players more than schemes are at stake here. That is the case in every sport but schemes can help. It was not the case here more often than not.

Nonetheless, the Chiefs are on the right pass because when you tell they are 1, 2 or three players away, with a great cap hit, there is hope for a return to the playoss and winning season.

Chiefs' second half of seasons
Week 9 to 17

9 vs Packers Lost 24-26
A game where blows were exchanged until Donald Driver decided to take the game in his hand. The decision to play rookie Jimmy Williams in the slot backfired. A 7 sacks two Ints and 2 FR from the defense was wasted because of blown coverage to Driver.

10 vs Broncos Lost 33-43
A game not so close as garbage time TDs from the Chiefs made the game closer than it was. The juggernaut Broncos played rather pedestrian but it was enough to dominate the game. LEfty looked more a rookie than a 4 year veteran.

11 at Colts Lost 9-20
Offensive GP backfired as the offense was putrid and that was all the difference between the Colts and the Chiefs. Like against the Packers, the shorcomings made this game a loss rather than a win.

12 vs Raiders Won 44-10
When morale is dwon into your sockets you don't need alcohol. You need a game against the Raiders. The game was held by the Chiefs run game and defense with a pick 6.

13 vs Chargers Won 27-26
A close divisional game where the Chiefs could even the records in 2006 against the Chargers. that was close and went back and forth. The difference : a missed XP that avoided the Chiefs to go in OT.

14 at Broncos Lost 21-56
The story : a bad defensive GP with Rookie CB Jimmy Williams on one on one with Ronnie Brown with no safety support that resulted in a career day casted into league milestone by Brown

15 vs Titans Lost 19-31
The Defense made Rosenfels looked like an HOF bound QB even with a 6 sacks day for him. Hats off to the Titans with their GP.

16 at Lions Lost 9-48
The Lions turned like the Broncos of the Midwest in this game. With the aim of a .500 season Lefty just laid a goose egg ; and the defense too.

17 at Jets Won 20-0
In the 80's there the New York Sack Exchange. That was a 80's game but that was the Chiefs being the sack machine with a total of 13 sacks.
Lefty was inconsistent and the Jets were not away until HB Henry ran a 30 yards home run.

TEAM STATS

Defense :
Sacks : league first with 62 total sacks
Takeaways : 23 rd with 24 in toal (19 Ints and 5 FR)
Red zone : 11th with 18 Tds and 17 FG allowed in 42 visits
Opposing passer : 13th with a 78.27 QB rating allowed
Defensive scoring : 15th with 3 Tds scored on TO

Offense :
Scoring : 17th with 22.6 points
PAss : 16th with 224.3 yards
Run : 26th with 89.5
Red zone : 5th with 91% of scoring (18 Tds and 21 FG on 43 attempts)

Key points

The offense can't produce well in red zone with more FG than TD's. Run game is to blame.

The run game is putrid, and the bmame is the OL. Upgrade at OG is needed because Chiefs' one in the end lack bulk

The defense lack TO, so there' aneed of ballhawk

Pass offense : the Wr showed their limit, there is a need a a veteran to help Lefty.
