Chiefs 2006 Draft Recap
The Chiefs had 8 picks in the 2006 draft. Here's what they get.

1.19 :: CB Jimmy Williams - Virginia Tech / 6'2" & 216lbs
Measurable :
SPD STR AWR AGI ACC CTH JMP
93 64 51 90 91 49 94

The reasoning behind the pick :
In this draft, the major aim was NT and MLB to switch to a 3-4 defense. Then again, CB was also a priority because age and skills erosion affected the roster.
So four players were short listed for this :
- CB Jimmy Williams
- NT Gabe Watson
- MLB Gerris Williams
- CB Kelly Jennings
With PW on all guys, the decision was which position to target. Looking at the depth on the pool, it was decided to see what was more likely to stay at 1.27 and 1.28. NT and MLB were more likely. Moreover, looking at the GM who were picking afterwards, the two CB targets were likely gone too.
So CB was the pick. then, who to pick ? Williams is not as skilled as Jennings, but his age and PW combined with his size and JMP made him the choice. He has nonetheless sub CTH skill.
If we apply what happened in terms of progression (rookie + sophomore + TC)
to CB Charles Tillman, Williams in three years can gain 2 SPD, 4 AGI and 4 ACC, putting him at 95 SPD, 94 AGI and 95 ACC. Ready then to be CB 1 when regression strikes Tillman.

1.27 :: DT Johnny Jolly - Texas A&M / 6'3" & 325lbs
Measurable :
SPD STR AWR AGI ACC CTH CAR JMP BTK TAK
68 96 53 63 70 38 25 71 40 64

The reasoning behind the pick :
First : one can be qualified as delusional or hopeful. I think I was both, because I expected NT Gabe Watson to be available there ; as well as MLB Gerris Williams. So once they were out, it was time to decide with what remained.
As for NT, we look for 330+ pounds. That only left then Gholston and Montgomery. STR is also an important factor, and Jolly had a superior one with 96 in PW. So trying not to be over-stubborn with weight, when you look combining STR, SPD ACC AGI and TKL, he was the best with first round grade at NT. So he became a Chiefs.
In the end AGI skewed down and ACC went up. I like better AGI but as a NT who will be asked to clog the middle and heabbutt centers and guards that is fine. If we base same progression as DT Kevin Williams who his on chiefs Roster, Jolly can add up 3 in STR, 1 to 2 in SPD, 3 at ACC and AGI at minimum. That will make one of the better NT in the league.

1.28 :: MLB D'Qwell Jackson - Maryland / 6'0" & 242lbs
Measurable :
SPD STR AWR AGI ACC CTH CAR JMP BTK TAK
85 75 56 81 83 65 30 69 35 78

The reasoning behind the pick :
Firstly, I went blind on him, because I went out of PW and a pair of them because I click the wrong guy (XD). So I had to decide with standard information. Skill wise, Schlegel and Dobbins (the 2 MLB remaining with 1s round skillset) were better in SPD, ACC, AGI. Jackson was a better TKL prospect. Another point ; Jackson is only 23 and the others are 24 and 25. Deciding again not to go just freaknut about skills, the better long term prospect was choosen.
His AGI is as of now limited ; but ACC and SPD great. I like better STR but this will be ok in the end.
If I mimic MLB Kendrell Bell progression he will have +9 in TKL, +4 AGI, +2 ACC and + 2 SPD. Not too shabby. The point is Bell was the only MLB, so progression may not go as described. The point will then be to see which GP and which position at MLB (1 or 2) will benefit the most for Jackson.

1.32 :: LOLB Clint Ingram - Oklahoma / 6'2" & 240lbs
Measurable :
SPD STR AWR AGI ACC CTH CAR JMP BTK TAK
84 76 54 86 87 53 30 52 25 72

The reasoning behind the pick :
I was not particularly looking for an OLB. I traded for a veteran from the Colts, and I was more looking OT with this pick.
I like quite a few guys there, but I couldn't decide which one to chose because I like higher AGI for an OT than what was there. I felt I was too much reaching at 1.32 for a mid second rounder more or less. I was very undecided, so I look at other positions on the board with first round grades. And then there was Ingram. And also Danieal Manning. The FS is some need because our current FS can't stay healthy. I also didn't want to spend AP point to move SS to FS, so it was out of question to take a reach because there were no more SS worth (remember I am out of PW). I looked back at the Veteran from the Colts and then I was not sure to maybe add luxury because he can still do the jobs. Then I got a DM from Will "2 minutes before we move to the second round". It got me out of slumber and decided to go with BAP and that was Ingram.
I have no clear comparison to project Ingram, because Derrick Johnson is just a 1 year player, and the other guys I add I didn't do much whether it was Shawn Barber or Scott Fujita. But in a 3-4, I do hope it will get fine. Ingram will be move to ROLB.

4.16 :: LT Kevin Boothe - Cornell / 6'5" & 325lbs
Measurable :
SPD STR AWR AGI ACC PBK RBK
50 91 58 62 63 85 81

The reasoning behind the pick :
With no second or third round picks, and having traded RT John Tait, the top priority to start round 4 was an OT. Boothe was right in the value there with no PW to gauge. The knock is his SPD bit the rest skewed up quite well ; and well enough to consider him the starting LT.
All the targeted OT were not there so even if need the first approach was a need, Boothe at 4.16 is definitely a great pick to develop on the left side. Maybe more suited at OG, he gives flexibility should something happen.

4.23 :: David Thomas - Texas / 6'3" & 248lbs
Measurable :
SPD STR AWR AGI ACC CTH CAR JMP BTK PBK RBK
79 80 50 77 83 70 63 72 70 47 45

The reasoning behind the pick :
TE was looked not because there was room to get value, but to move to FB. The UFA and draft pool at FB were Meh, so the focus was a TE.
Ar first, with what remained, the team had target Davis and Joe Klopfenstein, with Joe Klopfenstein being the primary target. With him snatched before, the pick was DAvis, and there's no regret even if he skewed not that fine when you look at Joe Klopfenstein now.
He has correct skills to play the position. No world beater but definitely an upgrade over what was at disposition and over what the team had last season.

6.31 :: K Bruce Redden - Oklahoma St. / 5'9" & 195lbs
Measurable :
SPD STR AWR AGI ACC KPW KAC
33 28 51 13 53 88 86

The reasoning behind the pick :
To ensure a kicker is in there with Jay Feely on his last year of contract and on the wrong side of 30. The kicker pool was not exceptional but a flyer on 6th round pick bears no wrong with this kicking ability at power and accuracy. AGI is Loooooooow but will that be a burden ? Time will tell.

7.23 :: LE Kamerion Wimbley - Florida State / 6'4" & 258lbs
Measurable :
SPD STR AWR AGI ACC TKL
71 83 50 69 77 55
The reasoning behind the pick :
Roster compliance - and flyer for diamond pick.
He could be a decent depth in a 4-3 defense, but in the 3-4 he lacks weight and SPD to the liking. Just a roster filler.

Chiefs GM adresses the 2006 first round picks
Here's what happened in the presser after the first round of the 2006 concluded.

Satan Claus - Hellish Bungle
Can you tell us why you traded back in the first round giving 2.05 and 2.30 for 1.32, to a division rival ?

Chiefs GM :
Well, we wanted to be aggressive with our board. We did trade 1.05 for three late firsts initially because even we were out of top tier talent according to mock drafts, we were confident to have what we need and gain more picks. We are not a top pick away from being a Superbowl Vegas favorite, so better add picks. And then when the Broncos offered 1.32 on the block it was a no brainer because we could snatch a player we wanted without the stress of waiting to our lap. 2.30 was also really too far to our top targets in the second, so better trade it when the occasion arises.
Moreover, it eases the case of resigning and restructures, because we have only 4 guys instead of five if they all pan out.

Nick Bright - First things last
You took 4 guys in defense. Lefty needs more talented WR. so why that ? And why trading Ryan Sims a proven DT in the league just to have a rookie replace him

Chiefs GM :
The focus of this draft was defense, because we're changing to a 3-4 defense and we needed fitting personnel. We played some 3-4 in the end of last season because Derrick Johnson was wasted as a 4-3 OLB. our Defensive line was not the best fit for that, and Ryan Sims was not looking to play DE as we may have thought initially. Truth be told, it would be a waste of his talent so there was no problem to trade him to both content us and him.
So, as you see it now, we were looking to pick NT and MLB to play that 3-4 defense. The depth of the pool at both positions, and the projections we did were favorable enough for us to trade back from 1.05 and get both a MLB and NT that fit the mold. We were also in the mix for a CB, because both Bartee and Warfield are on their last year of contracts, and we needed to prepare the furture. So now you have 3 reasons to those 4 picks.

AS for OLB, we were not looking directly, because we traded with the Colts for a veteran ; that was just how the board and the draft spoke.

As for WR, apart both Jennings and Marshall, we have not another guy with first round grades. Even at 1.05 Marshall was unreachable unless you were ready to give a lot of assets. Moreover, we were not a WR away from being a contender. As for Jennings we were seeing he might fall. He didn't, so be it.
Know that as a GM you cannot draft draft crushes, you need to get the perspective and long term view.

Pat Atoes - Football cuisine mag
You didn't match the ME bid for Dante Hall ; what that ? And why trading Tait if you - it seems - didn't really planned to draft a RT ?

Chiefs GM :
I know Dante is a fan favorite, and was a key piece both on offense and special team. But you have to planned ahead, and we needed to get sized at WR. that's why we did trade for WR Marcus Maxwell. We also plan to get our TEs more involved in the game plan, so don't worry about our receiving corp and usage.

As for RT : we indicated John we would not resing him or restructure him. HE asked so for a trade, and was willing to go to a possible SB contender. So we did. Then we did not pick a RT because that's how the board and the draft fell. We have solutions at hand : move Clabo, sign a FA, another trade. So don't you worry, RT will be covered.

Mike Flanrio - Pro Football Tusk
Can you get us back to the reasonning of trading for TY Warren, a very good player but on his last year of contract ? You did publish the trade but there were no such explanations ?

Chiefs GM :
Ty is a versatile DE who can play along the line. We traded for him to be a 3-4 DE but we were never to tell that to avoid the league knowing our strategy. You got to keep your hand close to the vest.
We will either resign or restructure Ty so don't you worry we delt our 2007 first.
We are looking forward to pair him with Derrick Johnson on the left side to wreck havoc, because remember we do have to face Payton Manning twice a year now.

Dianna Russ Init - NFL wetworks
Any last words ?

Chiefs GM :
Yes.
Firstly, you still have something white under your lips !
Secondly, we are happy to have those 4 new guys in the building.
CB Jimmy Williams, DT Johnny Jolly, MLB D'Qwell Jackson and LOLB Clint Ingram will contributors from day one. they brought energy and skills and we are looking forward to have them in Camp.
As for the draft, we don't pick until the fourth but that's where we can work magic because there are always gems to be found ; so saty tuned for day 3 of the draft.

Chiefs offseason ... so far
The 2005 season went not as the team expected. The strong defense went awol after mid-season, and the offense struggled all year even if there were flashes at times.
There was feeling some shake-up was needed all the more age is catching up around the team ; as well managing the cap for the near future 2 next seasons.

As so, firstly the team put DT Ryan Sims, RT John Tait and CB Eric Warfield on the trade block. No moves yet for them but a lot of interests for Sims who appear to have his day counted in KC.

The Chiefs have also a lot of of players they won't resign, putting their priority on punter Travis Dorsch. On a weak punter class, it was best to resign him now instead of going on war bid on ME tag.
On ME tag they put WR Dante Hall. The human joystick is an important piece offensively and on ST. The team does not want to loose him but in case they have to following FA phase, they are in place to a compensation.

The team also restructured CB Charles Tillman's contract. The 27 year old signed a new 5 year deal with a salary of $25.11m and a $2.75m bonus. With Warfield on the block and and Duane Starks not to be resigned, it was important to keep the best CB left for the future.

More than the previous off-seasons, the Chiefs have been active on the trade markets. Nothing alike the Broncos in the division, no splashes but key trades putting them in a comfortable position before the draft :

TRADE 1 : Chiefs Send 6.05 / Colts Send LOLB Mike Peterson.
Shawn Barber is gone, so a veteran presence was needed to play ROLB and accompany Chiefs rookie of the year LOLB Derrick Johnson.

TRADE 2 : Redskins Send LE Ty Warren + 4.16 + 2007 7th / Chiefs Send 4.05 + 2007 1st Rd.
The Chiefs were not actively shopping for a LE but when the Redskins came with the offer it was a no brainer because Ty Warren is one of the better LE in the league. Chiefs did well enough with average players but an update like that is hard to pass on.

TRADE 3 : Raiders Send DT Marcus Bell / Chiefs Send 3.05
The Chiefs were looking to add a clog in the middle of the DL in the rotation and they got just that with Bell.

TRADE 4 : Vikings Send 1.19 + 1.27 +1.28 / Chiefs Send 1.05 + 7.05
The Chiefs thought long and hard about the Vikings offer and they finally accepted. Reasoning : the Chiefs are not a player away to a SB, and they need talent across the roster. Tha give them a lot of flexibility and ammo to play with the board. That gives them 5 picks in the first two rounds.

Rumors say the Chiefs are not yet finished trading, as they are now looking MLB and WR. Some contacts have been made, but nothing yet to emerge.
