How the Dallas Cowboys lived the draft? |
Well, this won’t be a pretty formatted article, I’ve read many of other great quality articles, and sadly I don’t have the time or energy to do one of those, mostly writting cause want to share my personal thoughst about the draft, from now on, I’ll try to write more like this, without worrying about if is a long or short article, if have an idea or a format, but sharing my thoughts.
The draft for us in theory started on the last trade deadline, when acquired DE Peppers, there I sent our only 1st round pick Miami 1st that ended being 1.6, while I would’ve loved to pick there on this draft there’s 0 regrests as Peppers was a dream and there are important plans for him on the team, that said we also traded our future 1st on the last draft, so reach off-season with 3 2nds and not much more.
I did like the draft, I know the common thoughts were that the draft was very loaded at the top and not much more, but genuinely I liked it, but still I did trade my 3 2nd, why? because I saw 2 deal opportunities that liked and alidgned with the plans, those 2 players were QB JP Losman and TE Courtney Anderson, both players comes from the infamous low Injury draft class, but now with the new rule, maybe are able to stay longer on field, the risk is there, but for me now is way more managable and worthy to bet on it.
Short long story, didn’t manage to get much more pick but the 2.16 pick from Eagles sending our previous starter TE, so reached the draft with only a 2nd round pick, and with 1 player I wanted to draft at the top of the 1st round it being LE Mario Williams, he felt exactly as my kind of player, very young which is the prototype I look for and very athletic with a body that let him play as DT, it’s well known those are my kind of players, not necesarily because are effective but because are sexy, spoiler alert I didn’t get him, and he ended in San Diego so wish the best of lucks to my friend Breck.
Well, back to the draft night, I was feeling really sick, and a couple of hours before draft I did post some of our best prospects to see if could get a deal put me in Williams positiln but didn’t happen, right after the draft started threw a hail mary and sent a DM to Cardinals GM offering HB Sjax + CB Bartell for 1.2 pick, I was going to draft Brandon Marshall, in retrospective, I don’t need him having Lelie, and Perry, but well, he’s a stud and had to try, he didn’t see my offer and he picked Cromartie, on the “radio show” he mentioned would’ve considered the offer, maybe yes, maybe no, im aware I should’ve dmed Will a bit earlier but as say was more like a thing of the moment.
After that I did try to see if Williams kept falling, a way to trade in or trade up but ultimately couldn’t finally decided to leave the offce, recover my health and see the results of the 1st round later, for the 1st time in many years Apolo didn’t pick on the 1st round, and it’s the result of a change on strategy I’ve been working at since the last days of SFL
Feeling a bit better of health, I went back to the office to see the results of the draft, almost every pick was good and no reach. that often means less talent did fall, but saw 2 interesting prospects, ran the PW and by my surprise both were good: WR Marques Colston and OLB Tim McGary... different name but will call him like that. The reality is that im pretty comfortable with my group of LB and WR at the moment, but talent like that cannot let be pass, so I saw Jets GM Chris had 2.2 on the block and sent 2.16 + a fut 3rd for get up, with both players still on the board, had to take a decision, and finally went for WR Marques Colston, he reminds me to WR Chris Henry a prospect I did lose on the same Peppers deal, Colston is very raw but also is very dominant on the physical side, has elite blocking skills and well,,, player with Brees on an alternate dimension, finally what made me stay away from Tim McGary was that he’s raw, and while is ok and probably will produce, my defense currenly has similar players, so I preffer taking a different approach and rely in someone more progressed, even if less athetic, also I think in future drafts will be able to find similar players, while 6”5 WR are harder and more valuable.
I did try to trade up for get him but finally Ravens picked him at 2.8.Now Cowboys still had the pick 2.19, and my plan was easy, wait and see what falls, by my surprise on the board there were a TE with elite attributes ranked as 1st round talent, at mid-late 2nd, you smile run to the podium and draft it, no second doubts, AF (not champa tampa) Anthony Fasano give Dallas arguably the most athletic TE core of the league, something is important on runnig schemes and heavy pass schemes as mine, also if Courtney Anderson goes down im covered.
At this point I was really happy with the draft, addind a 6”5 89 speed WR and 6”4 85 speed TE, add depth and versatility to our offense, and the main thing is that all of this is “an extra” wasn’t expecting anything from draft, I didn’t mentioned it early but I did acquire the 2.16 from chargers, sending my fut 2nd and a couple of 4th for it and late picks. that’s how got the resources for get Colstons, also Bengals did offer their 3rd for a future 3rd deal seemed as good value and took thinking maybe someone did fall, while the pool wasn’t overly talented at that point I drafted cornerback Mascus Maxey 6”0 - 91 speed but raw wit 48 awr, I usually avoid low awr on the position but I think anything can happen with nickel and dime positions on terms of progression, those position usually get sacks and tfl that contribute to their progression, with a couple of luck hits, that CB suddenly becomes 1st round talent, low risk with potential good benefit.
Finally during the draft I kept joking about out OL, it’s crazy how had 0 C, RG or RT in roster, while that seems as a big big problem, im not concerned, I’ve been giving less importance to OL recently, while an elite OL can change the game, and I did try to trade for Ogden, I think are very few the OL that actually set a difference, that say, our OL is not awful bad. Tra Thomas will be moved to RT, he comes from good performance and has great attributes, even if is a vet, then at left side traded for Todd Herremans, the rookie with best perfomance last season, and at LG coming back from last season have stacy andrews 45 pancakes-no sacks allowed, even playing out of position all season. Leaving us with 2 big needs C and RG, between draft and FA can be done, but as need cheap contracts was the moment to draft one, and went for C Chester, while is not overly athletic, slow, bad agi-acc, and 82 str, I love the 91 rbk with 85 pbk, and 58 awr for a 6.19 I love it, and will become our starter
Finally closed the draft with depth fillers players, got an interesting CB with Dee Webb and not much more. That was the Cowboys draft |

Cowboysmania, the glory to the heaven and the stars! |
The Dallas Cowboys have achieved the ultimate goal, conquered the SB XL and took the title home, the dream came true when the team and GM needed more, after the most special member of the team Novak, did cross rainbow weeks ago, the team became one, and played with different motivation, behind the Cowboys theater and GM Shapiro personality, the things within the team were very different to what was displayed publicily, the players created a unique core built from love and friendship, the Dallas Cowboys became a family.
With our angel and the extra motivation the Cowboys knew this was the season and left the life on the field, every inch, every ball, every member of the team gave the 100%, not for themselves but for the cause, because the city deserved it, the cowboys fans deserved it, and because that was a promise we did during the #28 retirement ceremony.
Football is a sport where talent, and effort require an ammount of luck to succeed and in the PTF is not different, I always say that, but I consider the result of the season fair and a reward to the efforts done during the last 3 seasons, the Cowboys original roster was a dumpster coming from an awful Jerry Jones organization and slowly the team philosophy changed, move by move, decision by decision, this team has the Shapiro style, if every GM of the league had to blindly guess the GM behind the team most would guess correctly, earlier on the season the Lego Defense article was posted, the versatility of a unique roster, built with freedom but with some ammount of logic behind, taking risk, trying something different, and taking decisions 1 step further on gameplanning and lineups.
The season was hard as we lost our QB for multiple weeks as early as week 2, but instead gave up, another “risk” was taken, acquiring a veteran with 80 thp, and Brunell was good enough for keep an almost undefeated season, and those are the kind of movements Dallas tend to do, I want to believe our team believes on projects, we see the best ability of a player and often ignore the negative part, it’s undeniable this project started with 1 player, and that’s our defensive captain Troy Polamalu
Polamalu reflects entirely GM Shapiro philosophy always think out of box, always aim for be different, always aim for the top. The book is clear, a 5”10 - 207 lb player do not belong on the spot where need to be physical and punish runningbacks, and we saw other safeties moving to LB so the Cowboys didn’t invent the wheel, but took it 1 step further, a franchise needed a hero took the biggest risk posible and moved their best player to an unknown situation, just hoping for the best. the road wasn’t easy with poor statistically production and a brutal lost vs Packers last season were we were demolished by running game, it seemed as our GM Madness was going to be our doom.
When the scenario was dark, it became even darker, our new acquired player that not only cost a lot of assets, was moved to CB, in a movement only a madman would do, and weeks before starter DT was relocated to LE, suddenly the Cowboys defense became a group of freaks, trying to prove to the world they can perform.
Our offense was not different, taking risk everywhere, on the QB position with a Drew Brees that had a complicated season 1 with Chargers, and that stayed on the tradeblock during multiple weeks, with concerns about his height and durability, Cowboys took a shot at him and decided to build offense around him, our most productive WR, coming with Ashley Lelie a player had performance problems with Denver but with a unique talent that soon became evident turning him into one of the best WR of league and finally the youngster, HB Steven Jackson a player joined team with 21 yo with high hopes on the future but became SB MVP at his sophomore season with 22 yo.
In the coming days we will have a complete season-playoffs recap where we’re going to talk at detail about eveything that happened, but we close this article with some words by our GM Apolo Shapiro.
“Winning a SB is an extraordinary feeling, after all is the goal we all have, but I don’t think the result change anything, I do this because I love doing it, and love being part of the league, Im competitive and try to do the right moves but ultimately not obsessed with the result I just want to enjoy the journey, I was convinced wa never winning a SB again and frankly I think this was my last ring, and part of me it’s ok with that, of course will try to win it again for all the Cowboys fans, but there are 31 wonderful GM, and even making playoffs going to be a difficult task, I want to express my gratitude towards Pats GM Rob for a great SB, game could’ve went to anyones way, he’s a top GM, have a competitive team and it’s matter of time before he gets his ring.
Finally as said on discord, and as doing here now, I want to dedicate the SB to my son and best friend Novak, the life without him haven’t been the same and miss him a lot, he helped me not only building this team but also gave my life a light when needed it the most, he did start this season with me and means a lot this was the Cowboys year, could’ve been any other season or never, but was this season, so with all my love that SB goes to him” |

Cowboys "Add" a new cornerback |
Cowboys are doing the promised move team gave fans after trading for Julius Peppers and he’s moving to Cornerback this week! Am Im writting this article because im short of few ap to get the move done.... yeah that’s a possibility, it reminds me to that time Tim Miller and Raiders did something similar hahaha.
Now about the movement, I had doubts if should’ve done it after playoffs and keep an strong DL, and the 4-3 formation we tried for the last 2 weeks, we lost badly vs Eagles last week, is not Peppers fault, and the entire defense did underperform, but seems as a good moment to say: Hey, what can be worse, the reality is that this is a big gamble, and one I’ll likely lose, but what if not? and what if this works? Ultimately winning requires an ammount of luck, the best I can do is align players and hope for the best, it will be very dangerous to start a 87 speed CB vs lets say Rams and their speedsters, but I ran some scrims vs Vikings and Peppers did relatively well vs Randy Moss, what’s better than Randy attributes wise?
He will become the first player I think ever, to play as LE, OLB, DT and CB on the same season, Mr Peppers is a very versatile player, he was one of the fastest players in the first 3 positions and now will be one of the slowest on the CB one, part of why I have 87 as a threshold is because last season CB Ray Buchanan had an DPOY season, he’s like the opposite prototype, high awr, and did produce a lot of interceptions, I don’t think that Peppers will be able to replicate that specially with his bad hands, but he will be able to deflect many passes with his height and will provide a much needed run support, following the logic, that not necesarily always works in game lol, a big body with high tackle on the off-side should be able to stop better the outside running, which fun enough even having some of the more light defenses of the league, maybe the most light as our LB are thin and small, we don’t do bad against the run, precisely because I already like our DL: Cochran-Warren-Kennedy.
Our defense if we don’t suffer an injury will be a 3-4, with those 3 players at DL, then as OLB Lejenue and Cowart (2 opposites one is an arrow but dumb, the other is smart but no so athletic) and at MLB Polamalu and Boiman, interestengly everytime Polamalu has a good statistical game (or almost always) the team struggles at defense, but when he doesn’t impact on the statline, his precense makes team playing better... Boiman is big and solidify the run support, finally at CB the core would be Madison - Peppers and then Buchanan going to jump as slot on playoffs, here sadly we will rest out best rookie on Bartell he have produced but is a rookie... Our safety tandem remains the same as all season with Knight and Rusell, there’s not much can do this season, traded for Peppers and moved him to CB, maybe... shouldn’t have traded for him, yeah, but all my teams are built with heart and not brain so it’s the moment to commit, welcome to the secondary mr peppers
This game has to be played, and there’s no guarantee in anything, so better to have fun while do it, if during the next 3 games or in a potential playoffs game he gets burn badly and allow idk 200+ yards and 3 TD, it will be hard not to think that lost was on me, but the CB position is like that, many of the best struggle with that every week, at some point the best thing to do is just sit back, and wait what happens,
So that’s it get ready because a 6”6 CB coming it to prove if size matters... or not...suddenly I have the feeling Bryan and Will going to comment this post, |

Cowboys offseason moves |
How have lived the 2005 off-season?
I think if we ask every GM on the league, most would say the offseason is the favorite part of the season, and for someone as me that loves being active, specially with trades and draft, that couldn’t be more true, I’ll be honest and say, PTF have been a hard to describe experience for me so far, not because the league but because myself. I’ve tried my best for rebuild Cowboys, but haven’t been able to be on optimal conditions, the last months have been very very difficult on personal perspective, specially the drafts have lined up on terrible times, the first one I was having a massive headache, with puking and awful weak, the 2nd one, very similar extremely low energy, and this most recent, I was living one of the hardest moments on my life, with my son Novak very sick and had taken the decision to let him rest, he showed a recovery that made me cancel last moment, and that happened 1 day before draft, so this draft was very emotional, I used it as escape from reality but ultimately didn’t have the ability to prepare or be focus at it. Of course that extended during the whole off-season,Yet, Im not a martir, everybody have their own challenges, and Im thankful to have this job as Cowboys GM, and be part of this wonderful league and communitty, have helped me a lot, and truly missed being around the months I wasn’t. So after that long introduction, I’ll try to recap our moves, and give my reasons for the moves, some will have more description others will be shorter.
Well... I think the biggest departure on our team and the biggest movement we did was our recentlya cquired LB Brian Urlacher, Urlacher is a fantastic player, but I felt had an already very strong LB core, and I needed WR and CB desperately. I already made an article talking about our draft, so won’t recap a lot into it, we had a lot of offers for Urlacher, many of them were very good, but I just felt were falling a bit short, specially considering he was restrructured and was going to play for cheap, ultimately we ended doing a trade with Miami Dolphins, that gave us draft picks for acquire WR Tab Perry, CB Bartell, and their future 1st, that I traded to Vikings on part of Peppers deal, what? spoiler at the start of the article, well it’s well known at this point Peppers is a Cowboy, and it’s also known Im back to writting because I want to move him to CB, and will happen as soon as I get the 150k needed AP, or maybe not, who knows, I could wait, specially as we’re currently on playoffs spots, anyway, back to Urlacher, we missed a key player there but was needed.
Another of our biggest trades this off-season came with champatampa and the broncos, yeah for me is not AF is champatampa, I sent our veteran WR Marty Booker, 1.24 pick and a 3rd round pick for WR Ashley Lelie, Im not sure if made an article about that or if mentioned it on discord, but lelie is a player I’ve wanted since the roster was announced, I think he has a lot of potential, is young and it’s fast, on a 6”3 body frame, he had the worst poroduction on broncos but thats normal if you don’t have a QB to throw to you, spoler alert and this is something we will discuss more in our season so far recap articles that coming after this one, Lelie as expected is dominating the field and have been a massive adition to the team .
I traded RT Walter Jones, that had an historical high contract but that was going to restructure for cheap, and our special prospect LG Van buren to Vikings, these 2 players were good members of our team and solid pieces of the OL, but Im a GM that doesn’t spend much in OL, barely drafts them on 1st round, the time did ended regretting it, even if were good players, so I can live with a temporal veteran or a lesser project, it doesn’t mean they are not great players that I’ll miss but sometimes is needed to sacrifice in some areas to solidify other aspects of the game, and once again the priority were wr and cb not OL, maybe in upcoming seasons we will adress that, or maybe not, who knows?
I finally traded the last original cowboy player CB Derek Ross, I tried to trade him multiple times for that reason, it was giving me anxiety to see a player from original roster after a whole rebuild, a deal failed after he failed a physical with browns, but this time he went for jets 2nd on the draft, he came with an amazing cheap contract, and he’s doing very well in NYJ but as said, happy to get rid of the last piece, techinically our kicker is an original player but personally I just care they don’t miss FG, and for Punter is like care even less, our punter is a FA sign so not original player, maybe this off-season trade our kicker? could be but for now will ignore that
Another player we traded was our young MLB Prsopect Darrel McClover, I liked him a lot and I think he will be great on Tampa, but a 2nd was a fair price, and that give us a young player on this upcoming draft, we’re set at MLB position with our team leader, Troy Polamalu, Im staying firm with him, I made the compromise and not moving him even if maybe I should’ve kept him as S or move him to CB, Im a crazy guy and see him as MLB gives me some kind of inner peace and makes me enjoy the game, the stats are not displaying what i’ve seen on my sims and in the games, the numebrs lie, the film doesn’t and sadly McClover was a victim of that.
Traded picks, curiously I don’t think I’ve been very active trading picks during draft, or days before it, something I was very active at, probably as said haven’t been able to be active as I like, yet I traded my 1st on a deal considered good value as Bulluck (already traded him, and wish I would’ve kept him) but mr Herr knew I wanted Peppers lol, currently the pick is projected to be playoffs so I don’t think the risk made me regret trading my first but is probably something won’t repeat
The rest of departures were players that played a minimal role on the roster and won’t mention them but I wish them the best on their new teams, or at FA if they’re there.
We acquired some veterans with high contracts that Im really happy was able to acquire, specially on secondary where I love awwareness, and with prices were not that high, letting me to focus resources on other areas, we added CB Sam Madison that comes as an elite CB for 2 more seasons, and Free Safety Sam Knight one player I was really excited to get, is not physical dominant, but 85 speed is not bad and comes with premium awareness at safety something is not common on the league, and something appreciate a lot, as being burned deep, hurts bad. The other veteran joined the team via trade was Flozell Adams former cowboy that returns to the team, now that think about it... techinically he destroys my plan of not having any original cowboy, but if I traded back for him does it counts? anyway, it’s a temporal patch but something that helps our OL not to be awful bad and be somehow decent.
One of the most benefical things for the team were the free agency, I think was able to grab some of the best talent available without overpay, something surprised me as Im often cheap, and not so active on free agency, but all the gm on the league are trying their best and the competency is very hard, so have to try to improve in aspects not good, and Free agency is a priority, managed to get starter safety bryan rusell, former viking 6”2, smart, relative young with some years still on the tank and not paying him much money, another solid grab was HB Taylor, and HB was traded for a 2nd before, so 2nd round talent, give us a great duo tandem of HB with Steven Jackson, he makes a good money but still for the quality and getting him free the contract is very accesible, another spoiler of the season he have been very productive, another “key grab” was OLB Rocky Boiman, not moved to MLB and playing behind Polamalu giving us size on the position, he’s not a physical stud on terms of speed but is tall, strong and with above average football skills, that’s good enough for me, specially as didn’t overpay for him, and comes as a great rotation player for not big money. Sam Cowart joined on after draft FA a veteran that plays for min salary posible, our former DPOY yeah for me he won it, CB Ray Buchanan did return to the team via ME min salary posible, he’s even slower but he have been productive as CB #3 - #4 and expecting him to play a key role on posible playoffs role.
Basically that was my off-season recap, it doesn’thave a nice format or order but I want to write my so far season recap and felt needed to mention some of our moves to make it made sense.
Thank you for read |

Codename: Optimus Prime |
After some complicated days, I’m back at the office, still very sad but life continue. And Im back with a massive move, one trade where probably paid a bit more than I should have, and probably not the best idea to do blockbusters when in emotional struggle, but my style is like that, my teams are built with heart and passion, can’t deny my nature, it’s the kind of GM have been for years, and Im very proud of following heart and gut always.
I did compromise a bit our future, but I’ll work harder and try my best on next drafts and FA to get back on feet, I’ve had a dream since league was announced, was close to go that team just for make it happen, but joined Cowboys, tried twice to acquire this player before with no luck, and I felt sad after that, so I was not going to let this happen again, and did what was needed. But what am Im talking about? Well its already in all media but:
Cowboys traded for Julius Peppers
We sent Dolphins 1st (which is projected to be top 10), something makes me sad, because Felipe is a good friend, and genuinely wasn’t expecting him to have a season like this, schedule and injuries haven’t help him. Aditionally to the Dolphins 1st I sent CB Carlos Rogers and WR Chris Henry our 1.32 and 2.1 picks from last draft respectively, players with lot of potential, and that maybe could’ve become starters on the team or excellent trade assets, and finally one of our best players on defense this season at OLB Bulluck, which cost us our 1st this season and had excellent contract, we sent this package for LE Peppers and Panthers 3rd which should be high. Value wise I think overpaid a bit, not much but a bit, ultimately much depends on where Dolphins 1st ends, but grabbing a 1/1 player as Peppers it’s very hard, meaning Im ok doing it. I think have built myself a reputation of offering great players when acquiring elite talent, I mean it feels good having some good reputation at something, specially after my movements usually over-criticized hehehe.
Frankly, I think if I had sell Rogers and Henry at off-season, and kept rotating 1st, and finidng more and more deals, maybe I could’ve ended with a better roster, but I don’t want to, I mean I feel good with current team, Bartell won the inner race vs Rogers, I just don’t want to develop 2 CB and Lelie - Perry are my #1 - #2 WR Group, on draft I’ll miss that dolphins 1st, for sure, and Bulluck is a player wanted to keep, but same time I feel well covered at LB for now, and he was going to be OTB for maybe a mid 2nd at off-season? Something that played a very important role on saying yes, was the GM on the other side, relationship with Vikings and GM Herr is excellent, and I know we will keep doing more trades over the years, and end of the day is law of life, and unwritten code, whenever trade for an stud, unique player has to pay a bit more than his price, otherwise, whats the motivation doing it?. And finally, Vikings did pay very well for him, 1.14 - 1.18 and their future 1st for him, so yeah anything I’ve sent had to be on that range
Tl;dr
Cowboys Sent:
Dolphins 1st
WR Chris Henry
CB Carlos Rogers
OLB Keith Bulluck
Vikings Sent:
LE Julius Peppers
Panthers 3rd
A dream come true
I don’t think Im a good GM, because Im emotional, started the article saying that, I do all my movements based on heart, and since the moment roster was release and knowing the change of position rules, I’ve had a dream: Play Julius Peppers as CB that dream depended on something very important: to have Julius Peppers, and that part is already done, now just need to get enough AP, and decide when will do it, currently 7-1 with playoffs hopes, and if get there will try my best to win, so still unsure if would do the change as soon as get the AP, or if will wait till im eliminated, or win SB (A man can dream, right?) hehehe did I just jynxed myself, well I guess I said being eliminated too, so that’s a counter jynx. Anyway, this trade opened the door to a lot of fun, Im not sure the size and attributes will work, even it’s a risk considering the “low speed” and the awful hands of 14 catch, yeah he likely not getting any interception, but the life is for have fun, and who knows if the experiment goes awful bad, will be a fun anecdote and he can go back to DL. The life is about try things, and have fun, Im not sure how many more years this will continue, if there’s a league after PTF, or what future looks like, but when I retired SFL I thought everything was over, and here I am, I don’t like thinking much on this, but this is likely my last dance, maybe for all of us, Madden 08 is an important part of my life, and I really really want to see Peppers as CB, because is not only an experiment, it’s fun to watch, it’s something will give me joy (till he gets burn hehehe) but will give me another reason to watch my games, and well for anyone that want to watch the most cool, fun and popular team of the world, Cowboys broadcast is free wolrdwide.
I like to think on myself as a showman (it’s my character on league) like me or dislike me, my teams are usually in the spotlight, in part because that’s something I enjoy, give me primetime every week, Im happy, no pressure just joy. And that said, really, who’s not curious to see how a defense with a 5”10 -207 99 speed - 99 tak MLB + 6”6 283 87 speed - 86 str - 85 tak does? At least myself Im very curious to see it, and can’t wait for it.
The combination of attributes on Peppers is so unique that had to be him, as mentioned had an eye on it since day 0, and ultimately Im being a test subject, I know if this works will try to be replicated, and if doesn’t work well I end being the clown, and no one will do it, however, anything that makes me enjoy the game more, it’s always a positive.
Ty for read, hope all of you having a wonderful day
