Jets Draft Recap
1.06 LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson (OVR: 86; 97 STR, 93 PBK, 92 RBK)
The Jets traded down from the 2nd overall pick and added a future 1st and two 3rds. Ferguson was the player the Jets wanted from the start, wanting to add a franchise tackle to protect QB Alex Smith. Ferguson is the best OL in the class, he's got 71 SPD, 97 STR, 61 AWR, 93 PBK, and 92 RBK. He will play LT for the Jets and be the starter, the Jets have made OL a priority and hope that a strong OL can help Alex Smith's development.
1.10 DT Haloti Ngata (OVR: 88; 89 STR, 67 AWR, 90 TAK)
The Jets traded down from the 8th overall pick and added an additional 3rd. Haloti Ngata is one of the best IDL in this class, he's massive and also has great athleticism for his size. Ngata is a towering 6'3, 340 lbs and has 67 SPD, 89 STR, 67 AWR, and 90 TAK. He will start on the IDL alongside DTs Kenny Peterson and Alfred Malone. He should be able to make an impact right away and help the Jets improve a run defense that struggled last season.
2.16 C Nick Mangold (OVR: 76; 60 AWR, 91 PBK, 88 RBK)
The Jets continued to build the trenches with their selection of Nick Mangold. Mangold fell due to poor testing and has 45 SPD and 43 AGI. He makes up for this with 60 AWR, 91 PBK, and 88 RBK. Mangold is not expected to start right away as he develops, but he should turn into a key piece of the OL along with 6th overall pick D'Brickashaw Ferguson.
3.02 CB Tim Jennings (OVR: 76; 93 SPD, 93 AGI, 92 ACC)
Tim Jennings is another player that fell due to a red flag, with his being size. He's 5'8, which is enough for a lot of teams to take a player off their board entirely. The Jets think he can develop into a good nickel, and he has the ability to do that. He has 93 SPD, 93 AGI, 92 ACC, and 90 JMP. He is expected to compete with CB Terrence McGee for the starting nickel spot.
3.11 HB Laurence Maroney (OVR: 71; 89 SPD, 60 AWR, 70 CAR)
After trading away HB Eric Shelton in the offseason, the Jets were looking to add another developmental HB. They got that in Laurence Maroney, who is 21 years old and has 89 SPD, 60 AWR, 70 CAR, 76 BTK. Maroney will be a reserve in his rookie season, but could carve out a much bigger role in the future as he develops.
3.16 MLB Leon Williams (OVR: 73; 83 STR, 61 AWR, 84 TAK)
Leon Williams isn't the most athletic LB, as he has 77 SPD, 71 AGI, 83 ACC. He makes up for it with 83 STR, 61 AWR, 84 TAK. He will be in the LB rotation along with Jamie Sharper, Tony Gilbert, London Fletcher and Gilbert Gardner. He is expected to also contribute on special teams in his rookie season.
3.26 CB Brent Grimes (OVR: 71; 87 SPD, 57 AWR, 79 TAK)
The Jets added another CB in the 3rd round, this time getting one from D-2 football in Brent Grimes. Grimes lacks great speed, only having 87 SPD, he does have 90 AGI and 89 ACC. He also has 57 AWR and 79 TAK, he's already a great tackler but will have to develop other areas of his game to get on the field.
4.02 WR Miles Austin (OVR: 72; 88 SPD, 55 AWR, 77 CTH)
The Jets were interested in drafting a WR earlier, but decided to wait until the value was good. They got Miles Austin, who is 6'2 and has 88 SPD, 55 AWR, 90 ACC, and 77 CTH. Austin will likely compete for the WR4 spot with fellow rookie Jason Avant, as the Jets continue to overhaul their WR room.
6.01 WR Jason Avant (OVR: 70; 84 SPD, 60 AWR, 77 CTH)
Jason Avant had poor testing numbers, and lacks speed for a WR. This could prevent him from getting on the field, but he does have some worthwhile traits. He has 84 SPD, 60 AWR, 86 ACC, and 77 CTH. Avant will compete with Miles Austin for the WR4 spot, but he will likely be the 5th guy and mostly contribute on special teams for his rookie season.
6.02 QB Tarvaris Jackson (OVR: 64; 84 SPD, 94 THP, 71 THA)
The Jets decided to add a developmental QB in Tarvarius Jackson, who is a very raw QB. He has 39 AWR and 71 THA. He is an intriguing prospect with 84 SPD and 94 THP, but he has a long way to go. He will be the QB3 in his rookie season, and likely the foreseeable future as he develops.
Jets Training Camp
QB Drill: Alex Smith (+2 AWR, +1 THA)
RB Drill: Thomas Jones (+1 SPD, +1 STR, +1 AGI)
WR Drill: Jerome Mathis (+1 SPD, +1 AGI, +1 ACC)
OL Drill: Kareem McKenzie (+2 AWR, +1 PBK)

LB Drill: Gilbert Gardner (+1 SPD, +2 AWR)
DB Drill: Antrel Rolle (+1 SPD, +2 AWR)
ST Drill: Matt Nuzie (+2 AWR, +1 KPW)
The Jets not only want their players to get more in shape, but also to improve their knowledge of the game. The Jets need to raise the floor of the team, and players understanding and executing the gameplan will help do that. QB Alex Smith continues to improve his game for his 2nd season, he is tasked with helping the Jets get back to contention, and the Jets have made sure to surround him with as much talent as possible to make that happen.

Jets Day 2 Recap |
Jets Day 2 Recap
With the 48th Overall Pick
The Jets traded down from the 34th overall pick with the Cowboys, acquiring a future 3rd in the deal. The Jets then selected C Nick Mangold, one of the top IOL of the draft class. The Jets have built a strong OL core for the future, getting D'Brickashaw Ferguson in the 1st round and now Mangold. Mangold will not have to start right away if he's not ready, at worst he will be great depth for the Jets early in the season. RG Randy Thomas is 30 years old, and the Mangold pick will likely allow the Jets to move current C Jonathan Goodwin to RG in the future. The Jets want to build an unmovable force in front of QB Alex Smith, and they are working to do that with these picks. Mangold has 85 STR, 60 AWR, 91 PBK, 88 RBK, he is not a good athlete with 45 SPD and 43 AGI. A lot of teams likely wanted to avoid Mangold with his poor athleticism, but the Jets believe his high floor and strong blocking ability will help make him a starting center in the league.
With the 66th Overall Pick
The Jets selected CB Tim Jennings. The Jets had a clear need at CB, even after trading for Renaldo Hill. They got much needed help at the position in Jennings, who has great athleticism. Tim Jennings has 93 SPD, 72 STR, 59 AWR, 93 AGI, 92 ACC, 90 JMP. Jennings is a great athlete but he fell due to his size, he is 5'8 185 lbs. Some teams do not want CBs under 5'11, which is understandable as it's difficult for them to win jump balls and contest passes. Jennings has a great athletic profile and the Jets believe that will make up for his size concerns, and he should fit in well as a nickel CB and may even be the starter right away.
With the 75th Overall Pick
The Jets selected HB Laurence Maroney, the Jets have a solid RB room but added a developmental RB in Maroney. Maroney is only 21 years old and pre-skew he has 92 SPD, 63 AWR, and 72 CAR. He will not be expected to contribute much in his rookie season as the Jets focus on developing him to become the potential future backup to HB Thomas Jones. The Jets drafted HB Eric Shelton in the 3rd round last year, but were able to flip him for LB London Fletcher and TE Andy Stokes. The Jets wanted to add a replacement developmental HB, and got a potential good one in Maroney.
With the 80th Overall Pick
The Jets selected LB Leon Williams. With the Jets having two older LBs in Jamie Sharper and London Fletcher, they wanted to add youth to the position. Leon Williams has a solid floor and is a good tackler, he will be able to contribute on special teams right away and should have a role on the defense in the future. Williams has 77 SPD, 83 STR, 61 AWR, 84 TAK, he's not an ultra athletic LB but he's a strong and reliable tackler. Williams will be kept in the middle of the field, and will be behind Jamie Sharper and Tony Gilbert to start the season.
With the 90th Overall Pick
The Jets double dipped at CB and drafted Brent Grimes. The Jets wanted to add more talent in the CB room and were able to do that with Jennings and Grimes. Grimes is not as athletic as Jennings, but he's a great tackler for a CB. Grimes has 87 SPD, 64 STR, 57 AWR, 90 AGI, 89 ACC, 79 TAK. He's one of the best tacklers at CB in this draft class and will bring strong depth to the room, as well as the potential to develop into a starter in the future.
Day 3 Plans
The Jets have the following picks for day 3:
4.02
6.01
6.02
The Jets will be right back on the clock with the 98th pick in the draft, and they have back to back picks to start the 6th round. The Jets will still be looking for someone who can develop into a starter in the 4th round, while the 6th round will likely lead to depth players being drafted. These are still important picks as they help round out the roster, and the players could develop into future starters. The Jets have filled many of their needs, although there are still positions they likely want to add to. The draft is thinning out, so it's important to try to find players with elite traits who has fallen out of the earlier rounds. |

Jets 1st Round Recap |
Jets 1st Round Recap
With the 6th Overall Pick
The Jets selected OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson, the Jets found their franchise LT. Inside the Jets organization, Ferguson was the #1 player on their board. They originally had the 2nd overall pick, but realized the value wasn't good at that spot for Ferguson. The Jets ended up acquiring the 6th overall pick, as well as two 3rds and a future 1st from the Vikings. They added a lot of value and still got the player they really wanted. Ferguson is expected to be the Jets starting LT, opposite of RT Kareem McKenzie. This will form one of the stronger tackle duos in the league, and will give QB Alex Smith a great OL in front of him. The Jets want to surround Smith with as much talent as possible to allow him to succeed, and the best way to do that is to build up the trenches. D'Brickashaw Ferguson is 6'6 310 lbs and has 71 SPD, 97 STR, 61 AWR, 93 PBK, 92 RBK, and 99 INJ. He has a good floor to be a starter right away, while also have a very high ceiling. His awareness is good enough to allow him to start right away and he will be a great blocker in both the passing game and running game.
With the 10th Overall Pick
The Jets traded the 8th overall pick to the Raiders, acquiring the 1.10 and 3.16. This allows them to add additional youth to the roster and still allowed them to get the player they want. They drafted DT Haloti Ngata with the 10th overall pick. The Jets cut DTs Bryant Young and Josh Williams, as they wanted to get younger on the IDL. Ngata is arguably the best DT in this class and will be able to make an impact for the Jets immediately. He stands at a massive 6'3 340 lbs, and has 69 SPD, 89 STR, 67 AWR, 90 TKL. Ngata adds more youth to a Jets IDL that features the Jets 22nd overall selection in 2003, Kenny Peterson. The Jets also drafted Alfred Malone with the 96th pick in the draft last year. Ngata is expected to start for the Jets at DT and should be a good contributor in his rookie season and eventually develop into one of the best DTs in the league.
Day 2 Plans
The Jets have the following picks for day 2:
2.02
3.02
3.11
3.16
3.26
The Jets will be making five total selections on day 2, allowing them to add even more talent to the roster. There are still multiple positions that the Jets could look at add, possibly even double dipping at certain positions with the amount of selections they have. The quickest way to jumpstart a rebuild, outside of finding a franchise QB which the Jets seem to of done with Alex Smith, is to draft a lot of players who can develop and become starters in the future. |

Jets Offseason Recap |
Jets Offseason Recap
Trading Down from 1.02
The Jets ended up with the 2nd overall pick in the draft. They would've been able to get a good player at that spot, but they felt there wasn't much of a fall off of talent in the top 10 and adding additional picks would benefit the team more. They traded down twice, originally trading down to the 3rd overall pick with the Cardinals. They then trading down with the Vikings to move to the 6th overall pick. In total the Jets traded the 1.02 for the 1.06, 3.11, 3.26, 2006 1st (from Vikings), and T Adam Terry. This is a massive haul and the Jets still stay in the top 6 of the draft and will be able to get one of their top targets with the pick. The Jets received interest in trading down from the 1.06, but opted to stay with the pick. They believe they are going to get a really good player at that spot and are comfortable staying in the spot. The 1.06 treated the Jets very well in the past draft where they got S Antrel Rolle with the pick.
Trades
In the past draft the Jets drafted HB Eric Shelton with the 3.14, Shelton is 6'1 246 lbs with 87 SPD. The Jets intended to keep Shelton to be the backup to HB Thomas Jones again. The Bills showed interest in Shelton and the Jets were able to find a good deal that helped them improve weak spots on the team. They acquired LB London Fletcher and TE Andy Stokes in the trade. London Fletcher is an older player at 31 years old and will likely regress after the season, but he currently has 82 SPD, 95 AWR, 87 TKL. He gives the Jets a reliable force in the middle of the field alongside Jamie Sharper and co. It was important the Jets added more help at LB as Gilbert Gardner, who the Jets drafted with the 1.14 in 2004, has dealt with injuries in his first two seasons. He only played two games in his rookie season before getting hurt, and he made it ten games this past season before getting injured again. The Jets can't rely on Gilbert to stay healthy, so adding a reliable LB is important. Andy Stokes is a young ascending TE with solid physical traits, he has 83 SPD, 72 STR, 81 BTK. The Jets will be able to develop Stokes as a solid second option behind starting TE Anthony Becht. The Jets also have TE L.J. Smith who is a free agent after the season, they will likely lean on their TEs heavily to help out 2nd year QB Alex Smith.
The Jets also made a trade with the Cardinals to acquire a solid nickel CB in Renaldo Hill. Hill projects to be the Jets nickel CB, he has 78 AWR, 91 AGI, 90 ACC. In three years with the Cardinals he had 159 tackles, 4 INTs, and 53 deflections. The Jets had a clear need at CB as they only had Derek Ross, Terrence McGee, and Richard Colclough. That CB room was not going to be good enough going into the regular season and they made it stronger by acquiring Hill. The Jets may still add another CB before the regular season as it's important to make the room as deep as possible, especially when you have to play the Patriots and Bills offenses each twice a year.
Free Agent Signings
This free agent class was not considered to be strong, and many teams decided to not overpay for players they felt weren't worth it. The Jets had solid cap space, but were one of the more quiet teams. They brought back HB Thomas Jones before free agency, and ended up bringing FB Mike Alstott back. They signed two outside free agents in WR Travis Taylor and HB Maurice Morris. Taylor comes from the Ravens where he's put up 60 receptions and 970 yards in his past two seasons in Baltimore. He's 6'1 and has 90 SPD, 77 AWR, 82 CTH. He gives them a reliable WR who can fit in alongside 2nd year WRs Jerome Mathis and Troy Williamson. Maurice Morris was signed to fill the void of HB Eric Shelton as the backup to HB Thomas Jones. Morris totaled over 900 yards and 14 TDs in his time with the Seahawks. The Jets will likely add a few more free agents after the draft as they have enough cap space to do so, they could use more depth at WR, T, CB, and S.
Draft Plans
The Jets currently have the following picks in the draft:
1.06
1.08
2.02
3.02
3.11
3.26
4.02
6.01
6.02
The Jets have nine total picks in this draft, including six in the top 100. This will allow the Jets to get an influx of talent to help this team win now and in the future. Mock drafts around the league have mocked many different players and positions to the Jets, unlike last season where it was clear they were taking a QB with the 1st overall pick. The Jets have the flexibility to go with whoever they believe is the best player available with their two top 10 picks. The Jaguars are expected to draft QB Vince Young with the 7th overall pick, which allows the Jets to get their top targets back to back with the 6th and 8th overall picks. the 34th overall pick in the 2nd round will likely give the Jets a first round caliber player who falls into the 2nd round, and they have three 3rd round picks to add even more young talent. The Jets have gone 2-14 in each season under their current GM, and the expectation is that the team takes a step forward this season. Having as many picks as the Jets do will help them move towards that goal as they continue to rebuild this roster and get back to becoming a more competitive football team. The draft will likely be much more unpredictable this year than in the past, last year it was clear that the top two picks would be QBs. Many also correctly predicted that three WRs, along with S Antrel Rolle, would go with the next few picks. The only locks in this draft seem to be LB DeMeco Ryans going to the Panthers with the 1st overall pick and QB Vince Young going to the Jaguars with the 7th overall pick. The rest of the top 10 could be filled with surprises, as there is not as clear of a consensus this year as their was last year. The WR class is considered weaker this year, while less valuable positions like LB are stronger. There are a few intriguing TEs available in this class, which should make the 1st round exciting and unpredictable. |

Jets Season Review |
Jets 2005-2006 Season in Review
The Jets went into the 2005 season with a completely retooled team after trading away a lot of veteran players for picks. They selected QB Alex Smith with the 1st overall pick, and got DB Antrel Rolle with the 6th overall pick. It was presumed that the Jets would struggle during the season with a young team and a rookie QB. The start of the season was poor for the Jets, multiple blowout losses occurred. The team improved during the 2nd half of the season as the offense improved drastically which gives hope for the team in the future. The Jets finished 2-14 and will pick 2nd in the 2006 draft. The Jets also hold the 8th overall pick from the Raiders. The Jets have a lot of options in a strong draft and should be able to get two core pieces for their roster moving forward. It's expected that the Jets will be aggressive in free agency as they build around Alex Smith.
QB Alex Smith
Alex Smith was the big ticket addition to the Jets team in the offseason, selecting him with the 1st overall pick. Alex Smith was put into a difficult situation with a young team that lacked a ton of reliable players, and his performance in the first half of the season backed that up. Alex Smith started the season with 3 TDs & 17 INTs and was on pace for one of the worst seasons by a rookie QB in recent history, but he massively improved during the 2nd half of the season. He ended up throwing 17 TDs and 11 INTs in the 2nd half of the season as the Jets offense put up multiple 30+ point games. He finished the season completing 44% of his passes, throwing for 3,000 yards, and having 20 TDs & 28 INTs. The turnovers were very high, he ended up leading the league in INTs. Although some of that is likely due to the lack of weapons and the Jets consistently playing from behind, forcing him to force some throws. The Jets have made it a priority to work on his awareness this offseason and will add more weapons to allow him to thrive next season. It's likely that any rookie QB would've struggled in this situation, but the Jets should be excited about Smith's potential and how he can improve going forward.
HB Thomas Jones
The Jets traded for HB Thomas Jones in order to add a playmaker to the offense, and overall he delivered this season. He ended up with over 1,200 rushing yards in his first season as a Jet. His production dipped a bit from his past two seasons with the Cardinals, although that was to be expected as the Jets played from behind in most games. He had 283 carries with only 1 fumble and was reliable all season for the team. He is slated to be an UFA this offseason, but the Jets intend to resign him and keep him with the team for the long-term.
WR Jerome Mathis
The Jets selected WR Jerome Mathis with the 31st pick in the draft to add a weapon for QB Alex Smith. Mathis had a solid rookie season, ending up with 43 receptions for over 800 yards and 5 TDs. He showed big play ability and was also the Jets kick and punt returner during the season. He should continue to improve as the Jets offense improves and adds more weapons.
LE Shaun Ellis
After trading away RE John Abraham, the Jets resigned Shaun Ellis to a long-term extension to keep him in New York. Ellis responded by having his best season with the Jets yet. He ended the season with 31 tackles, 4 TFLs, and 12 sacks, including two 3 sack performances. He ended up averaging a sack a game as he only played in 12 games, he is a defensive leader and should be a core piece for the Jets going forward.
DT Bryant Young & DT Kenny Peterson
The Jets wanted to see improvement along their IDL and they got that this season from the duo of DT Bryant Young & DT Kenny Peterson. Bryant Young was a free agent signing during the offseason to bring veteran experience to the team. Even at 33 years old he put up 6 sacks in 13 games and helped improve the Jets IDL. It's unknown if he will return for next season as he is contemplating retirement, he may also be a cap casualty for the Jets, but he provided a reliable force along the IDL for the Jets. The other part of the IDL duo was Kenny Peterson, who was the 22nd overall pick to the Jets in 2003. Peterson had a solid rookie season, posting 4 sacks, but he did not appear in a game in 2004. He rebounded when given a chance in 2005 by having 5 sacks and 3 FRs. He looks to be a big part of the Jets defense in the future and should continue to improve as he's only 23 years old.
MLB Jamie Sharper
MLB Jamie Sharper was the Jets big free agent signing and an attempt to get a reliable leader in the middle of the field, and he did just that. He ended the season with 98 tackles, 16 TFLs, 2 INTs, and 16 deflections. He did this while being held mostly out of the last 3 games as the Jets got younger players playing time. He was a reliable force in the middle and should continue to be a key defensive leader in the future for the Jets.
CB Derek Ross
The Jets traded 2.01 for CB Derek Ross in the offseason, which was a steep price for a smaller CB. Ross' best trait is his athleticism and ability to take the ball away. He ended being tied for a team leading 5 INTs, including a pick six against the Colts. Ross is on a cheap long-term contract which gives the Jets a lot of flexibility and gives them a reliable ball hawk CB to build around.
FS Quintin Mikell & SS Antrel Rolle
The Jets safety group is one of their strengths on the team, thanks to both FS Quintin Mikell and SS Antrel Rolle. Mikell was a ball hawk safety all season, finishing with 67 tackles, 4 INTs, 2 FFs, and 11 deflections. He was moved from SS to FS in the offseason and the move seems to of suited him well. He forms a strong safety duo with the Jets 6th overall pick Antrel Rolle. Rolle had a solid rookie season, ending up with 68 tackles, 1 sack, 1 FF, 1 INT, and 12 deflections. His season was cut short due to a season ending injury and he ended up missing the last 4 games. He should return even better for the Jets next season as he gives them a great foundational piece for the defense.
K Matt Nuzie
K Matt Nuzie was not given many opportunities to kick during the season, as he finished the season 17/19 on FGs. He finished last in the league in FG attempts, mostly due to the Jets offense struggling early in the season. He's an accurate kicker, although there are some concerns about his FG range which is limited. The Jets hope to see him improve his leg strength and expand his range in the offseason. |
