DETROIT LIONS 2007 DRAFT REVIEW
Nine selections | Athletic traits, developmental upside and a few swings at the draft gem
1.9 FS DASHON GOLDSON
6'2" | 205 lbs | Age 23 | SPD 91 | AWR 51 | AGI 93 | ACC 95 | CTH 62 | TAK 75
People should probably start expecting me to reach on safeties with rare physical/athletic trait combinations. I remember drafting a stud early in the SFL that not many people liked at the time, but he ended up being pretty damn good.
Guess how many safeties in the entire league are at least 6'2" with at least 91 SPD? Two. SS Donnie Nickey of my Lions, and now Goldson.
I believe the ability to take away a couple of touchdowns over the course of a season has some value, and the height helps make up for the lack of awareness he currently has. At 6'2" with 91 SPD, 93 AGI and 95 ACC, he's simply going to be able to make some plays that other players at the position can't.
Some have speculated that I might move him to CB, but that wasn't in the plans and won't be unless he gets his awareness up significantly, and fast. Most likely, he's my starting free safety for the next decade.
1.10 MLB KELVIN SMITH
6'2" | 240 lbs | Age 23 | SPD 88 | STR 67 | AWR 68 | AGI 85 | ACC 89 | CTH 49 | TAK 79
I'm not going to lie, I was initially targeting DeOssie, who ultimately went 5th overall to the Saints. I liked his size and AGI/ACC combination. But Smith wasn't too far behind, and in a key attribute like awareness he has a +7 advantage.
At 6'2", 240 with 88 SPD and 89 ACC, Smith has plenty of athleticism of his own. Add 68 AWR and 79 TAK and I'm comfortable with picking him early even if I didn't hear his name much in other mocks. I feel like he has a pretty safe floor with upper-tier potential. I know many value STR at linebacker, but clearly I feel it’s much less important.
Current starter Chris Claiborne will hit 30 next season and Smith should hit the ground running as the lead MLB once that happens. He'll get significant time anyway in the 3-4 defense we'll run in many games this season.
Looking back on it, I think Smith, his lower cap number and the additional pick next season were well worth moving down.
2.9 TE CLARK HARRIS
6'5" | 252 lbs | Age 23 | SPD 82 | AWR 50 | AGI 76 | ACC 87 | CTH 82 | JMP 76 | BTK 68 | PBK 55 | RBK 49
The pick was acquired in a trade down from 2.1, and TE2 was a position I wanted to address considering the depth there in this draft class. I was definitely looking at 6'7" Scott Chandler here if he fell but, again, the Saints sniped him just a few picks earlier.
I was hurting for some private workouts by this point, as most of mine either turned out super disappointing or the players were close enough that I felt like I could wait. Harris has a good combination of size, speed and acceleration at 6'5", 252 with 82 SPD and 87 ACC.
What sealed it for me was the hands. Starting with 82 CTH was exactly what I needed: a tight end with reliable hands and good size for the red-zone packages that run with two TEs. He's also a decent insurance policy in case star TE Antonio Gates should happen to come down with an injury.
2.16 DE TIM CROWDER
6'4" | 260 lbs | Age 22 | SPD 75 | STR 61 | AWR 52 | AGI 58 | ACC 85 | TAK 71
Blind pick. I was hoping his speed/acceleration would skew up, so I was disappointed when it didn't. The 85 ACC is still pretty good, and 71 TAK is okay, but there's nothing here that really jumps off the page.
I guess being only 22 years old is the saving grace. There's plenty of time for him to develop, and it's not like studs were being picked left and right after he came off the board, so that made me feel slightly better. The draft just wasn't good at the position.
4.10 ROLB CHAD NKANG
5'11" | 215 lbs | Age 22 | SPD 82 | STR 80 | AWR 42 | AGI 83 | ACC 86 | CTH 59 | TAK 66
At this point everything was blind. Nkang isn't normally a linebacker I'd go for, but he looked like he had a safe floor with a little upside if things skewed right.
The 42 AWR obviously isn't ideal, but 82 SPD, 80 STR, 83 AGI and 86 ACC is a pretty solid athletic package for a fourth-round linebacker.
I was looking for a player who would skew up nicely as the draft gem in combination with the attributes that wouldn't be changed. I think it was Beason, but it could have been Durant. Either way, that would've been nice.
But what I'm left with is a pretty good special teamer and a cheap depth piece, as two current backups are set to hit the free-agent market next offseason.
4.19 C DUSTIN FRY
6'4" | 294 lbs | Age 24 | SPD 63 | STR 92 | AWR 46 | AGI 52 | ACC 81 | PBK 80 | RBK 70
Fry is 24, but I think he was the most athletic center in this class. At 6'4", 294, he's got 92 STR and 81 ACC to go with an already solid 80 PBK.
Dominic Raiola is coming up against the regression phase of his career, so it was time to keep an eye out for a suitable replacement to develop. Fry could end up a starter if he gets playing time, but that's going to be difficult unless we're out of contention or up big in the standings.
Again, the eye on the draft gem was there, and the thought of combining his athleticism with 20th overall pick Ryan Kalil's awareness, agility and blocking skills made him too interesting to pass up.
He looks to be a solid backup for the time being.
4.25 HB CHRIS HENRY
5'11" | 234 lbs | Age 22 | SPD 83 | AWR 65 | AGI 88 | ACC 93 | CAR 75 | BTK 70
I needed one more running back to fill out the RB3 slot and Henry was the best of what was left. I like his awareness, his 93 ACC and his size at 5'11", 234. He's not a burner with 83 SPD, but the acceleration is excellent and 75 CAR gives him something useful right away.
I firmly believe if given enough training camps and playing time he could eventually be a starter or a damn good RB2 in the right scheme.
A skew up to Marshawn Lynch's speed and BTK would've been nice. As a draft gem, combining that with Henry's existing size, acceleration and awareness definitely would've given him RB1 upside.
4.28 LT COREY HILLIARD
6'5" | 308 lbs | Age 22 | SPD 68 | STR 87 | AWR 67 | AGI 54 | ACC 72 | PBK 79 | RBK 66
I love spotting an overlooked lineman late that I think could eventually develop into a good starter. I guess who doesn't, right? I feel like Hilliard could actually be one of those guys.
He's got pretty solid athletic traits for a 6'5", 308-pound tackle. There are only three other tackles in the entire league that can match his combination of 68 SPD, 87 STR, 67 AWR and 72 ACC. Those are meaningful attributes for the position, too, not adding something unimportant just to make him seem more rare than he is.
His blocking skills need a lot of work, particularly the 66 RBK, but 79 PBK isn't a bad place to start. At only 22, I think I can eventually make him a starting left tackle, and a good one at that.
He might split a little time with the Moose there this season, so long as things aren't dire with a super-tight race while playing a team that could beat us.
4.31 CB TREMAINE McBRIDE
5'9" | 185 lbs | Age 22 | SPD 88 | AWR 66 | AGI 85 | ACC 87 | CTH 56 | TAK 19
I know many GMs noticed the draft gem would skew up to Revis Island, so looking at someone with potentially higher awareness to add to the elite speed Revis would give made McBride an interesting prospect.
Obviously it didn't work out, but I think the 66 AWR guarantees him a spot on the depth chart even if it's CB4/5. He's still got 88 SPD and 87 ACC, so it's not like he's completely lacking physically either.
I also find it funny he's listed as a hard hitter with a laughable 19 TAK. Apparently he hits hard as hell once every five games when he actually manages to tackle somebody.
