PTF Tennessee Titans 2006- Offseason Update #1
Statement from GM Mellon
Well, here we are, it is the offseason of PTF’s fourth season. It was a rough end to 2005 and was also a rough start to the offseason. For a couple days I thought I was done being a GM. I thought time had caught up to me and I would bow out of the day to day GM duties of any team here in the PTF. In the end I decided to return for at least another year. I would like t make it more but that will be decided at a later time. Now comes the decision on how to plan for this season. I have had GM’s reach out to me and say I should blow up most of the team and go into a rebuild phase and try for the best pick possible in the 2007 PTF draft. (ie: “Tank” so that it is easier to finish with at least six wins in 2007 and extend what would be my Hot Seat year.) While blowing things up could have been a reasonable route, I believe we are going to give it our best shot to be as competitive as possible and go 9-7 or even better make the playoffs. Of course bad luck, tough loses and player injuries could have a lot to do with that. I have never tanked in my pro football GM career and while I see where it works, I think winning is too important for me. What we will most likely do is take the exact opposite approach other teams in our division are doing and that is implement very few changes. We are in the extremely unique position of where we only have a couple depth chart positions currently available. We have swapped late picks early in the off season but we have not brought a player in and have only sent 1 player out, at thus far. The player we did sent out though was a good one, RB Davenport. We made the hard decision to stick with 30 year old veteran and PTL career rushing leader, Fred Taylor as our RB1 this year. Our team ranked in the top 10 in many offensive categories year including passing yards per game, rushing yards per game, the least amount of interceptions per game, the least amount of total turnovers per game and even ranked #1 in first downs gained. We don’t think our offensive is far from where we want it to be. We may move away from the un controlled Pittsburgh offensive book though. Even on defense, we were in the top half of the league rankings wise. We had massive problems stopping teams from scoring in the red zone though, in fact we ranked dead last in the category. We did not have an image or a footprint last year. We switched from a 43 to a 34 but never found a comfortable setting. This year, I believe we are going with a 43 and not changing. At least that is the plan at this point in time.
Retired
WR Troy Bown- 34 years old, 12 year pro, 5’10”, 196# out of Marshall
Career PTF stats include: 79 catches for 1244 yards, 8 TD’s, 21 tackles plus 16 pancakes
2006 stats (between the Panthers and Titans) 20 catches, 352 yards & 3 TD’s
Resigned
LB Tank Williams- 26 years old, 86 OVR, 6’3”, 223#, 4 year pro out of Stanford

Contract: Williams signed a 5 year default contract worth $22M with a signing bonus of $4.4M. The contract will pay Williams $2.83M in 2006, $3.41M in 2007, $4.17M in 2008, $5.16M in 2009 & $6.43M in 2010. GM Mellon plans on moving Williams to ROLB once position changes open up. He was moved to MLB when GM Mellon decided to go to a 34 towards the end of last season.
Match Eligible
DE/DT- Anthony Weaver- 26 years old, 84 OVR, 6’3”, 290#, 4 year pro out of Notre Dame
68 SPD, 83 STR, 70 AWR, 72 AGI, 74 ACC, 81 TAK, 63 STA, 75 INJ, 94 TGH
It is possible that another team send an offer to Weaver but unless the offer is for 2nd round or better money, GM Mellon will match, bringing Weaver back to the team. His expected position will be DT.
Current Free Agents
After GM resigned LB Tank Williams and declared DE/DT Anthony Weaver match eligible here are the remaining free agents. These players have been informed they will be released into the PTF free agent pool.
WR’s MarTay Jenkins & Joe Juricius
CB Marcus Coleman
FB Vonta Leach
DT Grady Jacksonville

Positional Reviews
Current Depth Chart:
QB Room
Notes: Culpepper is the confirmed starter. Culpepper does have just a 76 INJ rating though so this is something GM Mellon may look at increasing via the new option in the PTF Activity Shop. GM Mellon really like the balance Rosenfels brings as the teams QB2.
QB1- Dante Culpepper- 29 years old, 99 OVR, 99 AWR, 97 THP, 93 THA
Contract: 4 years- $5.63M in 2006, $7.32M in 2007, $9.52M in 2008 and $12.39M in 2009

RB Room
Notes: Fred Taylor will be expected to have a better 2006 than he had 2005 after being traded for. (GM sent the Jacksonville Jaguars and GM Haag what would end up
being pick 1.32 for Taylor last season.)

FB Room
Notes: GM Mellon like to run with a pair of FB’s when possible as he prefers to have his team’s FB2 in for kickoff, kick return and punt return duties so expect GM Mellon to sign a 2nd FB before the start of the regular season.
FB1- Joel Dressen- 24 years old, 81 OVR, 53 PBK, 50 RBK, 57 AWR, 83 SPD, 82 STR, 81 ACC

TE Room
Notes: GM Mellon keeps looking for a faster TE but starting TE Angulo keeps showing why he feels he has earned the permanent status of TE1 for the Titans. Oh by the way, like FB Dressen, Angulo was a pro bowler in 2005.

DT2- Anthony Weaver- 26 years old, 84 OVR, 69 SPD, 83 STR, 70 AWR, 72 AGI, 74 ACC, 81 TAK
Contract: Currently a match eligible free agent.
DT3- Darrell Shropshire- 22 years old, 73 OVR, 68 SPD, 86 STR, 52 AWR, 70 AGI, 72 ACC, 74 TAK
GM Mellon sent pick 6.26 to GM Brady and the 49’ers just minutes ago. GM Mellon feels as if Shropshire’s athletic ability matches that of Anthony Weavers. While, not an elite DT, GM Mellon likes Weaver’s ability to handle the run but also his ability to pressure QB’s. The Titans could benefit from someone like Shrophire in the DT rotation.
DT4- Willie Blade- 27 years old, 70 OVR, 57 SPD, 90 STR, 57 AWR, 62 AGI, 66 ACC, 70 TAK

Contract: 1 year making $970K this season.
OLB5- Angelo Crowell- 26 years old, 69 OVR
Contract: 1 year making $1.31M this season.
MLB Room
Notes: GM will most likely carry only 2 MLB’s as he will attempt to use OLB3 Cooper also as the main backup to MLB as well. (We will see how this goes as Cooper has ridiculously low INJ and TGH.)
MLB1- Solomon Bates- 26 years old, 81 OVR, 93 SPD, 75 STR, 76 AWR, 88 AGI, 84 ACC, 81 TAK
Contract: 6 years, $1.35M in 2006, $1.51M in 2007, $1.72M in 2008, $1.99M in 2009, $2.34M in 2010, $2.79M in 2011

CB Room
Notes: GM Mellon feels good abut having the CB room organized and the depth chart known prior to the regular season, actually even before the pre season! The CB depth chart may not be at the top of the league, GM Mellon feels comfortable with it and believes it can help the team fight for the division.

FS/SS Room
Notes: GM is going to attempt to get sophomore Kurt Campbell into more playing time this year. This will not be easy since the team must win at least 9 games.

Trades
GM Mellon sends pick 6.26 to GM Brady and the San Francisco 49’ers for DT Darrell Shropshire. Shropshire is 22 years old, 6’2”, 301#, from South Carolina and was drafted last year by the 49’ers with pick 7.12 (204th overall). His attributes include: 68 SPD, 86 STR, 52 AWR, 70 AGI, 72 ACC, 74 Tak, 71 STA, 77 INJ, 72 TGH. GM Mellon currently has him listed as the teams DT3.
GM Mellon send RB Najeh Davenport to the Carolina Panthers and GM Roberts for picks 3.24 (originally from the San Diego Chargers) and 4.11 (originally from the Jacksonville Jaguars). Davenport, 26 years old was the Titans starting RB until they traded for Fred Taylor last year. The trade comes with a large hit to the Titans 2007 salary cap of $4.08M. In retrospect GM Mellon should have kept the price at what he was hoping for, which was a 2nd round pick since the cap hit was so large but at least the trade will give the Titans a little something to look forward to during the draft.
GM Mellon sent picks 7.18 (originally of the Seattle Seahawks) and 7.25 (originally of the Baltimore Ravens) to GM Cohen and the Philadelphia Eagles for pick 6.15.
GM Mellon sent picks 7.05 (originally of the New Orleans Saints) and 7.16 (originally of the Washington Redskins) to GM Fernandez of the Denver Broncos for pick 6.26.

Titans 2005 Team News & Updates |
PTF Tennessee Titans 2005
Update V1.0
Retirees
As we say goodbye to the 2004 season and hello to the 2005 one let’s take a look at the veterans who retired after last season:
FB Larry Centers- 36 years old, 87 OVR
RT Richmond Webb- 37 years old, 84 OVR
WR Keenan McCardell- 34 years old, 82 OVR
LOLB Willie McGinest- 33 years old, 77 OVR
Of these players, WR McCardell will be missed the most as he made 56 catches for 996 yards and 6 TD’s over the first two years of the PTF as a Titan.
Resigned
CB Lenny Walls- 26 years old, 69 OVR, 6’4”, 192#, from Boston College
88 SPD, 62 STR, 56 AWR, 88 AGI, 90 ACC, 51 CTH, 90 JMP, 62 TAK, 88 INJ, 70 TGH, 91 STA
While Walls is not a superstar he was given quality time at both NCB and DCB last year. This year he may be given time between CB1, NCB and DCB. He might even be rewarded with a 2nd consecutive training camp invite. GM Mellon likes his size and his low salary.
Signed to a 5 year contract with $5.17M with a signing bonus of $650K. He wiil earn $750K in year 1, $870 in year 2, $1.01M in year 3, $1.17M in year 4 and $1.37M in year 5.
Match Eligible FA
RB Jonathan Wells- 26 years old, 77 OVR, 6’1”, 252#, from THE Ohio State University
85 SPD, 82 STR, 62 AWR, 80 AGI, 84 ACC, 82 CAR, 71 JMP, 91 BTK, 40 PBK, 45 RBK, 87 INJ, 87 TGH, 68 STA
Like Walls above, Wells might not be a superstar but he will have a role on the Titans, unless another GM signs him during free agency. He has performed fairly well thus far behind RB’s Jerome Bettis and Priest Holmes. He has averaged 4.39 yards per carry and has seen time at RB, FB, KR and PR. GM Mellon has considered even moving him to TE. We may hear more on this later. It really comes down to whether or not GM Mellon has Activity Points that will expire or if he can carry them over.
Contact that will be offered by the Titans: 3 years $100K/$100K signing bonus. This is the league minimum and assures the Titans secure his match eligibility.
Players Released Into Free Agency
WR Antonio Freeman- 75 OVR, 33 years old
DT Luther Ellis- 83 OVR, 32 years old
RB Jerome Bettis- 99 OVR, 33 years old
RB Priest Holmes- 99 OVR, 32 years old
RT Lincoln Kennedy- 77 OVR, 34 years old
RG Wally Williams- 63 OVR, 34 years old
WR Eddie Berlin- 72 OVR, 27 years old
RT Benji Olson- 83 OVR, 30 years old
Trades
QB Brooks Bollinger, CB Dennis Weathersby, DT Albert Haynesworth, Pick 1.32 to GM Justin Herr and the Minnesota Vikings for QB Daunte Cullpepper, DT Chris Hovan, RE Tony Brackens, RG Larry Allen and the Vikings 7th round pick.
All that can be said about this trade is wow! It is believed to be the largest trade when all things are considered that GM Mellon has done. All the players leaving Tennessee are superstars. The team gave up two 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick for QB Bollinger, drafted CB Weathersby with the 13th overall pick 2years ago and DT Haynesworht is one of the best defensive players in the league. They are getting back one of the top QB’s in the league with Cullpepper, a mid level DT in Hovan in his prime and two former star veterans in Brackens and Allen. Make no mistake about it, the quality of the other veteran QB’s in the division are what made GM Mellon do this trade. He lost a contract year after finishing with a winning record last season (9-7) but behind division winner Jacksonville Jaguars and former champions, the Indianapolis Colts. While the Titans finished above the Houston Texans, let’s not forget the Texans beat the Titans last year and they picked up veteran QB Chad Pennington. There is no doubt, the Texans are going to be much improved next year as they are led by very talented young players.

Pick 2.23 to GM Tom Collins and the Buffalo Bills for LOLB Marquis Cooper, QB Ty Branyon and CB Anthony Henry
GM Mellon fell in love with two of the following player however he made a HUGE mistake. We will explain; He saw the amazing and unique attributes of LB Marquis Cooper that the Bills had on the block; 92 STR, 84 SPD, 86 ACC and he is as sophomore! It was not until after Cooper was on the Titans roster that GM reviewed his INJ and TGH ratings. Ught oh! Cooper has an INJ of 3 and a TGH rating of 9. Oh boy. This means there is zero chance of Cooper ever being a starter. GM Mellon can only hope he provides quality play at the BU LB positions. GM Mellon did the same thing with QB Ty Branyon. GM Mellon saw 70+ AWR and 86 THP and 87 THA from the sophomore and thought he would make an excellent young QB2 but did not check out his INJ and TGH ratings. Another Ught Oh as Branyon has an INJ rating of 24 and TGH rating of 32. As long as Culpepper stays healthy this will be fine but if Braynon has to play for an extended amount of time it might get ugly.
LOLB Marquis Cooper- 24 years old, 73 OVR, 6’3”, 213# from Washington
SPD 84, STR 92, AWR 64, AGI 74, ACC 86, CTH 28, TAK 67, INJ 3, TGH 9, STA 71
Contract Status: Signed for 3 more seasons
Year 1: $330K, Year 2: $430K, Year 3: $550K
Projected Role: Will move to MLB and be the team’s MLB2
QB Ty Branyon- 24 years old, 77 OVR, 6’1”, 228# from Texans A&M
AWR 71, THP 85, THA 87, INJ 24, TGH 32, STA 98
Contract Status: Signed for 3 more seasons
Year 1: $310K, Year 2: $400K, Year 3: $530K
Projected Role: QB2
CB Anthony Henry- 29 years old, 82 OVR, 6’1”, 205# from the University of South Florida
SPD 88, STR 60, AWR 74, AGI 85, ACC 91, CTH 66, TAK 71, JMP 91, INJ 87, TGH 89, STA 92
Contract Status: Signed for 2 more seasons
Year 1: $4.45M, Year 2: $5.78M
Projected Role: Stating CB1 or CB3
--------------------
Pick 7.08 & 7.18 to GM Tim Miller and the Oakland Raiders for WR Peter Work and QB Brian St Pierre
GM Mellon was hoping we could talk Peter Warrick into restructuring this contract to make it more team friendly once acquired. This did not happen as Warrick and his agent wanted even more at $10M+ per season to restructure. Warrick may not end up making the Titans roster due to this.
QB Brian St Pierre- 24 years old, 70 OVR, 6’3”, 224# from Boston College
AWR 59, THP 83, THA 87, INJ 70, TGH 87, STA 98
Contract Status: Signed for 2 more seasons
Year 1: $490K, Year 2: $640K
Projected Role: QB3
WR Peter Warrick- 28 years old, 75 OVR, 5’11”, 192# from Florida State
SPD 95, STR 48, AWR 64, AGI 98, ACC 88, CTH 75, JMP 84, INJ 79, TGH 77, STA 95
Contract Status: Last year of his contract
$9.75M
Projected Role: WR3 or WR4 and starting KR & PR
--------------------
QB Chad Hutchinson, Future 2nd & Future 3rd round picks to GM Norbert and the Baltimore Ravens for WR Tyrone Calico & the Ravens future 7th rd pick
With WR Peter Warrick possibly not sticking around for the long term, GM Mellon wanted to make a move for a young but talented WR. He believes he found one in the 6’4” Calico.
QB Chad Hutchinson- 28 years old, 71 OVR, 6’5” from Stanford
AWR 64, THP 87, THA 78, INJ 87, TGH 97, STA 90
WR Tyrone Calico- 24 years old, 79 OVR, 6’4”, 223# from Middle Tennessee State
SPD 97, STR 63, AWR 64, AGI 93, ACC 91, CTH 79, JMP 96, INJ 77, TGH 96, STA 87

Tennessee Titans- 2004 PTF Team News |
2004 Prime Time Football: Tennessee Titans
Well, here we are! We have kicked off the 2nd PTF season. GM Mellon unlike in seasons past wasted no time signing his GM contract for this season. GM Mellon has actually 5 years on his contract with the Titans since he led the team to the playoffs last season. GM Mellon was quoted as saying, “If everyone thought last year was hard, you better buckle up this year. It is going to be a bumpy ride. We have traded for what we hope will be our franchise QB of the future, Brooks Bollinger but are going to attempt to be competitive while introducing him to our competition. I have no doubt that you will see starts from both Brooks and our veteran leader QB Steve McNair. Brooks is younger at 24 years old vs McNair’s 31 years, has a stronger arm at 94 throw power compared to McNair’s 92 and also is more accurate as his throw accuracy will be either 90 or 91 after training camp compared to McNair’s 86. What Brooks does not have, in which McNair, a certified PTF/NFL Icon is elite awareness. Even with his 2nd year of regression McNair enters the 2004 season with 89 awareness compare to just 61 from Brooks. We play in an extremely tough division which includes the defending PTF champion the Indianapolis Colts GM’d by Gary Hickman, the always dangerous Jacksonville Jaguars and GM Gary Pearce and the up and coming Houston Texans and GM AC. This division is not well suited for a young QB but we are going to try and provide Brooks with as many weapons as possible along side what we hope is a tough defense. We will be looking to roll with a 4-3 defense this year. We started out with the same idea last year but quickly converted to my safety net Bill Bellick’s custom 3-4 defense. My goal is to give a longer rope to defensive coordinator Tim Lewis as he implements this new defense. Things are a little more complicated with the offensive and offensive coordinator Norm Chow. We have to work with Brooks and find out what type of system he is going to work out best in. We have lots of players coming back in CB’s Tony Beckham, Dennis Weathersby, Samari Rolle and Tim Wansley, Safeties Curry Burns, Terrence Holt and Nijrell, LB’s Keith Bulluck, Shannon Taylor, Tank Williams, Brian Simmons, Solomon Bates, Pisa Tinoisamoa and Rahim Abdullah, DE’s Carlos Hall and Jevon Kearser, DT’s Wendell Bryant, Albert Haynesworth and Willie Blade, OLBenji Olson, Dave Costa, Reggie Wells, PJ Alexander, Kevin Mawae, Steven Grace, Justin Hartwif, Bill Ferrario, Makoa Freitas and Taeg Whiting, WR’s David Boston, Cedric James and Eddie Berlin, RB Jonathan Wells, TE’s Richard Angulo and Casey Fitzsimmons, QB’s Steve McNair and Marques Tuiasospo, K Mark Jensen and P Kevin Stemke. At least 17 of these players will be starters for us, meaning we do not have many open holes. If you look at defense for instance after the moves we have made thus far we only need to fill one backup CB spot, one backup FS spot, one and one backup DE spot. Our entire starting defense is in place. On offense we believe we are done to needing a potential starter at LG, wide receiver 1, possibly WR3, fullback and possibly RB1. So again, buckle up it’s going to be one hell of a ride in 2004!”
Resign and Match Eligible Players
2003 Resign: LE Jevon Kearse- 28 years old from the University of Floria, Kearse played at both LE and LOLB last season. He totaled 64 tackles and a combined 24 tackles for loss or sacks and had 7 deflections vs two catches allowed. This season we expect him to play a designated DE role. He signed a 5 year contract worth $38.56M with a $10.45M signing bonus. The contract will pay Kearse $5.2M this season, $6.13M next season followed by seasons of $7.34M, $8.92M and $10.97M in the contract’s final year. Kearse attributes include 84 SPD, 86 STR, 85 AWR, 77 AGI, 86 ACC and 79 TAK.
2003 Match Eligible: RB Jerome Bettis- 32 years old out of Notre Dame, the Bus has cerainly slowed down a bit as he enters the season with just 82 SPD, 79 AGI and 83 ACC but he still has 81 STR, 87 CAR and 93 BTK to go along with 88 AWR. GM Mellon seems willing to at least consider having the Bus compete in the preseason for the starting RB spot. The offseason is still young so there’s plenty of time to think more on this. GM Mellon did in fact give an initial offer to Bettis. We will have more on this after free agency round 1 is complete.
Transactions
Trade: Pick 1.26, QB Billy Volek, 2005 1st round pick and 2005 2nd rd pick to GM Daren Roberts and the Carolina Panthers for Q Brooks Bollinger and the Panthers 2005 7th rd pick
This obviously, was a HUGE trade and they type that GM Mellon usually does not get invovled in but he thought, now after a playoff run last year, was the right time to get the Titans future signal caller. The Panthers gain QB Volek who is one of the better QB2’s in the league with 70 AWR, 90 THP and 82 THA. Volek is signed for 4 years and is on an extremely friendly contract that will pay $370K this years followed by $480K next year then $620K and $800K in the final two seasons.
With Bollinger, the Titans are obtaining a 24 year old QB out of the University of Wisconsin who was taken 9th overall last year. Bollinger’s contact was fully paid for by the Panthers so he will count $0 against the Titans salary cap for the next three years, unless the Titans restructure to add more deals before the contract expires. Bollinger is 6’1, 205# and has 61 AWR, 94 THP and 89 THA. As previously mentioned expect his THA and AWR to be boosted by training camp.
Trade: CB Troy Vincent and <draft pick 2.28 to GM AC and the Houston Texans for draft pick 2.23. Vincent, 33 years old and 82 OVR was traded in a salary cap saving move. The trade saves the Titans $3.83M this year and will have a hit of $1.37M towards the teams 2005 salary cap.
Trade: MLB Rocky Calmus to GM Will Cook and the Arizona Cardinals for draft pick 6.26 and draft pick 6.6. Calmus, 25 year old was the Titans MLB3/4 and on the last year of his contract. He will earn $330K from the Cardinals while the Titans save $450K from this year’s salary cap but must take a $120K hit on their 2005 salary cap.
Trade: FS Lance Schulters to GM Scotty and the Washington Redskins for draft pick 4.9. Schulters is 29 years old and is in the last year of his contract. This trade like the one above was done from a cap saving perspective as it saves the Titans $4.8M this season with a cost of $1.37M towards next season’s salary cap. Schulters had 72 tackles, 2 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery for the Titans last year. His attributes include 85 SPD, 60 STR, 79 AWR, 85 AGI, 87 ACC and 76 TAK. Schulters starting FS role will be taken over by the recently acquired former Raven Gary Baxter.
Trade: draft pick 3.19, draft pick 3.26 and draft pick 5.26 to GM Norbert and the Baltimore Ravens for CB Gary Baxter, DE Anthony Weaver and draft pick 7.23. GM Mellon states that the team will be moving Baxter from CB to FS and Weaver from LE to RE. Baxter is 26 years old, 6’2”, 204# and from Baylor University. His attributes include 88 SPD, 64 STR, 69 AWR, 90 AGI, 92 ACC, 64 CTH, 93 JMP and 59 TAK. While his TAK is low, GM believes his 88 SPD and 90+ AGI/ACC/JMP combo will him a very good FS. The move, if/when it happens will cost GM and the Titans 150K Activity Points. Baxter is in the last year of his contact and is set to earn $2.24M this season. There are rumors that claim GM Mellon and the Titans will try to restructure Baxter to a new 7 year deal if they invest the 150K Activity Points in the previously mentioned move to FS. Anthony Weaver is 24 years old, 6’3”, 290# and out of the University of Notre Dame. His attributes include 69 SPD, 83 STR, 66 AWR, 72 AGI, 74 ACC and 79 TAK. Weaver has two years left on his contract and is set to earn $1.72M this year from the Titans and $2.24M next year.
Released: RE Kevin Carter- Carter is 31 years old and can still play as he is 85 OVR however he was set to count for $5.41M against the Titans cap this year. His release frees up that $5.41M but will count $1.05M against next year’s salary cap.
Released: RT Lincoln Kennedy- Kennedy is 33 year sold and 81 OVR. He was set to count for $3.15M against this year’s salary cap. GM Mellon has decided to go in a different move at RT and move LT Benji Olsen to RT. This pending move allows the team to release Kennedy saving $3.15M but with a cost of $1M towards next year’s salary cap.
Released: FB Cory Schlesinger- Cory is 32 years old, 86 OVR and coming off a pro bowl season, an all pro season actually. GM Mellon believes regression caught up with Cory to the point where he would not be a valuable asset to the team in 2004. Cory’s release saves the team $1.02M this year and does not come with a cap hit for 2005.
Released: WR Keenan McCardell- Keenan is 34 years old and 92 OVR but was hit hard with regression. Due to this GM Mellon thought it was best to release him and save $3.64M towards this years salary cap. Keenan had two years left on his contact so his release carried a hefty hit of $2.94M towards next year’s salary cap.
Released: RB Corey Dillon- Corey is 30 years old, can for sure still play and has an OVR of 88. GM Mellon was hoping Corey would be willing to sign with the Titans for a much smaller amount but a deal could not be reached. Corey began the 2003 season as the Titans starting RB but lost the job midway through the year to Jerome Bettis. Dillon still has a very good season rushing for more than 700 yards, adding 200 more yards receiving and making 10 TD’s. The release of Corey saves the team $8.73M this season and does not come with a hit towards next year’s salary cap.
Draft Info
GM Mellon is rumored to be looking at potential starting spots at LG, FB and WR in the upcoming 2004 PTF draft. Multiple backup spots could also be targets. Currently GM Mellon and the Titans have 9 draft picks with less roster spots than that. Expect GM Mellon to package some of the Titans picks for earlier picks. Currently the Titans own the following picks:
2.23 (Baltimore Ravens)
4.9 (Washington Redskins)
6.06 (Arizona Cardinals)
6.08 (Denver Broncos)
6.15 (San Diego Chargers)
6.26 (their own)
7.09 (Washington Redskins)
7.23 (Baltimore Ravens)
7.26 (their own) |

Tennessee Titans- 2003 PTF Team News |
2003 Prime Time Football: Tennessee Titans
GM Introduction
The PFT Titans have announced they have lured GM Bryan Mellon out of retirement. GM helped design a Texans franchise in the now defunct GGL, which replaced the SFL. GM Mellon has been involved in other leagues after the original NFL league folded including the NAFL, MFL, GZL and PFL. GM Mellon’s career record between SFL and GGL was 187 wins, 117 loses in 305 regular season games for a .613 winning % just behind GM Anthony Fernandez and his .631 winning % for veteran GM’s. While GM Mellon has won multiple championships (NAFL, MFL and 2 in SFL) he has not lead a team to the big game in quite some time, as Arizona Cardinals GM William Cook likes to remind everyone of. GM Mellon is more proud of the number of times he has made the post season than the times he has been lucky enough to hoist the league championship trophy. GM Mellon believes this Tennessee Titans team currently has the players to do well but the sand in the hour glass is churning and time is not on the Titans side. This is a team of veteran nearing or exceeding regression age 30. In addition to fighting father time they will also have an uphill battle for wins in a division with GM Gary Hickman and the offensive juggernaut Indianapolis Colts led by QB Payton Manning plus GM Garth Pearce who is one of the best to ever do it and a young Texans team who are led by GM Anthony Cepparulo. Each of these GM’s, if we allow GM Mellon to be credited with the Texans final year in GGL, all made the playoffs last year: Hickman in Green Bay, Cepparulo in Kansas City and Pearce in Cleveland before he, like Mellon took a hiatus. That is going to prove to be some stiff divisional competition.
Roster Breakdown
The Titans currently have 18 players who have expiring contracts. A maximum of just 2 of these players will be resigned via the team single resign and match eligible. Thing don’t get much better over the next couple of years for the Titans as they have 10 players with expiring contracts after this season and an alarmign 21 players with contracts expiring after next season.
The following players have been labeled as position starters by GM Mellon therefore will more than likely not be part of trade discussions:
QB1: Steve McNair- 96 Ovr, 30 years old, from mighty Alcorn State University, $11.34M in 2003, $13.75M in 2004 and $16.87M in 2005- $9.9M cap hit if traded or released
86 AWR, 93 THP, 88 THA, 81 SPD, 84 AGI, 83 ACC, 80 CAR, 75 BTK
The only things GM Mellon does not like about McNair is his age and the fact he is a scambler. The scrambler tendency could be changed at the cost of 50K Activity Points though. This is something that is certainly in GM’s thoughts. With his age being what it is, does a change make sense though?
RB1: Eddie George- 99 Ovr, 30 years old, from THE Ohio State University, $8.48M with a $2.33 cap hit if traded or released
85 SPD, 82 STR, 88 AWR, 83 AGI, 88 ACC, 89 CAR, 93 BTK, 85 IMP, 90 INJ, 94 TGH
George is clearly on the outside of what some GM’s would consider starter material however GM Mellon believes he can lead the Titans rushing attack this year.
LT: Brad Hopkins- 85 Ovr, 33 years old, from the University of Illinois, $7.57M in 2003 & $9.31M in 2004- $3.56M cap hit if traded.
49 SPD, 89 STR, 84 AWR, 59 AGI, 62 ACC, 89 PBK, 90 RBK
GM Mellon hates the lack of SPD Hopkins posses however due the salary he has and the amount of a potential cap hit, it is safe to say Hopkins will start somewhere on the offensive line. *GM Mellon just learned that Hopkins is now holding out. Things might get interesting here.
C: Justin Hartwig- 80 Ovr, 25 years old, from Virginia Tech University, $390K in 2003 and $480K in 2004- $200 cap hit if traded or released
64 SPD, 89 STR, 69 AWR, 66 AGI, 70 ACC, 82 PBK, 83 RBK
GM Mellon think Hartwig can produce well enough to be the Titans starting C this year. He is set to make a very low salary which will help the Titans cap.
RG: Benji Olson- 84 Ovr, 28 years old, from the University of Washington, $2.38M in 2003 and $2.87M in 2004- $1.4M cap hit if traded or released
53 SPD, 92 STR, 76 AWR, 61 AGI, 64 ACC, 86 RBK, 88 PBK
GM Mellon likes the fact that Olson is less than 30 years old and is at least better than average when it comes to other RG’s. He will have some sort of starting position on the Titans offensive line.
RT: Fred Miller- 86 Ovr, from Baylor University, 30 years old, $6.35M in 2003 and $7.81M in 2004- $3.04M cap hit if traded or released
48 SPD, 93 STR, 84 AWR, 57 AGI, 59 ACC, 88 PBK, 93 RBK
GM Mellon, just like in the case of LT Hopkins, hates Miller’s SPD but will deal with in 2003. GM Mellon believes Miller will be just fine behind a veteran QB like McNair.
K: Joe Nedney- 90 Ovr, 30 years old, from San Jose State University, $1.09M with a $300K cap hit if traded or released
KPW 92, 90 KAC, 80 AWR
GM Mellon is fine with Nedney this year. He has that 90+ KPW and KAC combo which GM Mellon expect.
LE: Jevon Kearse- 93 Ovr, 27 years old, from the University of Florida, $4.78M with a $1.26M cap hit of traded.
SPD 83, STR 85, 81 AWR, 85 ACC, 76 TAK
GM Mellon knows for sure Kearse will be a starter at DE if he stays with the team. Currently he is considered a RE but if he stays with the Titan he will more than likely be moved to LE. If he does end up traded GM Mellon would expect a premium due to his eleite SPD, STR & ACC combo (not to mention the 80+ AWR as well).
RE: Kevin Carter- 87 Ovr, 30 year sold, from the University of Florida, $4.41M in 2003 and $5.41M in 2003- $2.10 cap hit if traded or released.
74 SPD, 85 STR, 83 AWR, 75 AGI, 78 ACC, 76 TAK
GM Mellon loves Carter’s size of 6’8” and 290# even if he is 30 years old. It would take valuable activity points but if GM Mellon could get them, he would seriously consider moving Carter to DT. Again though, it is extremely doubtful he would be able to acquire the points to do so. Carter, who is currently listed as a LE will more than likely be moved to RE since GM Mellon should be moving Jevon Kearse to LE.
DT1: Albert Haynesworth- 88 Ovr, 22 years old, from the University of Tennessee, $4.21M in 2003, $4.89M in 2004, $5.78M in 2005 & $6.94M in 2006. $7.68M cap hit if traded.
67 SPD, 94 STR, 75 AWR, 74 AGI, 79 ACC, 76 TAK
GM Mellon is excited to have this young DT stud, all 6’6” and 320# of him. He should be the Titans DT1 until GM Mellon decides to retire. He could be traded but it would take a massive offer for GM Mellon to even consider something.
ROLB: Keith Bulluck- 87 Ovr, 26 years old, from Syracuse University, $2.43M in 2003 and $3M in 2004- $1.1M cap hit if traded.
85 SPD, 75 STR, 74 AWR, 81 AGI, 87 ACC, 85 TAK
GM Mellon will no doubt have Bulluck part of his starting LB corp. Ideally, he would like to see Bulluck be moved to MLB. This move would take precious activity points to pull off and right now, GM Mellon does not have enough to really consider it.
CB1: Andre Dyson- 84 Ovr, 24 years old, from the University of Utah, $2.28M in 2003 and $2.8M in 2004- $1.6M cap hit if traded.
92 SPD, 53 STR, 76 AWR, 94 AGI, 95 ACC, 93 JMP, 65 CTH, 59 TAK
GM Mellon reallikes Dyson’s age of just 24 years even if he is less than 6 foot tall. It is possible that GM Makes makes a trade or signs another taller CB to battle Dyson. Even if this were to happen though, Dyson would be no less than the NCB.
CB2 Samari Rolle- 87 Ovr, 27 years old from Florida State University, $8.99M in 2003 and $10.97M in 2004- $4.82M cap hit of traded.
GM Mellon has announced Rolle will be the teams all important CB2 who will be responsible for going against other teams best WR. This is an especially tough role given that Peyton Manning is QB of the divisional rival Indianapolis Colts.
FS Lace Schulters- 84 Ovr, 28 years old, from Hofstra University, $4.02M in 2003 and $4.8M in 2004- $2.74M cap hit if traded.
85 SPD, 60 STR, 75 AWR, 85 AGI, 87 ACC, 62 CTH, 88 JMP, 76 TAK
GM Mellon like schulters size of 6’2” and 202#. He also has average athletic ability to boost. He will be the teams starting FS baring an unexpected trade.
SS Tank Williams- 83 Ovr, 23 years old, from Stanford University, $1.86M in 2003, $2.26M in 2004, $2.79M in 2005- $1.6M cap hit if traded.
While not having ideal athletics, Williams is entering just his sophomore season, is 6’3”, 223# and if GM Mellon does not send him to training camp or progress him he will gain sophomore at the end of the season. This is normally a tactic GM Mellon does not do however Williams could really benefit from this type of progression.
Free Agents
The following players will be released into free agency as they were not designed as the teams resign or match eligible.
QB Billy Volek- 74 Ovr, 27 years old, from Fresno State University

Transactions
Trade: TE Frank Wycheck-86 OVR, 32 years old, RB Robert Holcombe- 80 OVR, 28 years old & the Titans 3rd round pick (3.2 to GM Anthony Cepparulo for RB Jonathan Wells- 75 OVR, 24 years old & TE Rod Rutledge- 71 OVR, 28 years old. The trade will save the Titans $3.15M this season but will cost them $1.15M towards the 2004 salary cap. The trade came about when Wycheck approached GM Mellon and explained he had went to school with GM Cepparulo. GM Mellon, knowing the Titans were a bit over the salary cap and knowing were looking for a young RB to back up starter Eddie George agreed to grant Wycheck the trade. Wycheck’s strongest traits include his 88 AWR, 80 CTH and 81 STR, Holcombe did not really posses what GM considered to be key traits. Likewise, Rutledge also does not posses any specific trait GM Mellon likes and will struggle to make the Titans roster. Wells on the other hand does have traits GM likes including his 6’1” and 252 frame, his youth of 24 years plus his 81 STR and 89 BTK, plus he is signed for two years at a low cost which will help the Titans cap situation. Since starter Eddie George is 30 years old, it will also give the Titans a training camp option at RB.
Released: DT Henry Ford- 77 Ovr, 32 years old- saves $3.19M this season but will cost $1.9M next season
Position Change: RE Jevon Kearse to LE
Position Change: LE Kevin Carter to RE
2003 Resign: TE Erron Kinney- 77 Ovr, 26 years old
75 SPD, 83 STR, 55 AWR, 75 AGI, 70 ACC, 73 CTH, 83 JMP, 55 PBK, 60 RBK
Contract details are unavailable at this time due to a league mishap regarding Kinney’s restricted free agency status but GM Mellon is expected to sign Kinney to at least a 3 year default money contract. GM Mellon is not a fan of Kinney’s lack of athleticism but he is 6’5” and as the saying goes, “You Can’t Teach That”.
2003 Match Eligible: QB Billy Volek- 74 Ovr, 27 years old
68 AWR, 90 THP, 80 THA
Volek, is in the same boat as Kinney above in that he is currently listed as a free agent but league paperwork and files will be corrected soon. GM Mellon is excepted to sign Volek to a 5 year contract after the match eligible period is over, unless another team offers him a deal. It is expected that GM Mellon would match another teams’ offer.
Trade: GM Mellon sends the Titans 5th round pick (5.2 to GM Fernandez of the Denver Broncos for veteran TE Shannon Sharpe and the Broncos 7th round pick (7.20). After the Broncos eat his signing bonus Sharpe will be set to earn $3.39M this season. Sharpe is not a guarantee to make the Titans day 1 roster but GM Mellon said this was “A nostalgia move that I made with my heart. We will see how it works out.” Sharpe is 35 years old, does not have good size at just 6’2” but does boast 96 AWR, 91 CTH with okay SPD of 79, ACC of 80, PBK of 44 and RBK of 46. Currently GM Mellon puts sharpe ahead of Erron Kinney on the Titans TE depth chart.
Draft Info
GM Mellon is rumored to be looking at QB, MLB, OLB or CB with the teams 1st round pick in the first ever PTF draft. Historically GM Mellon has been one to trade his early picks but we are told he likes what he sees in potential 1st round picks. We are even hearing rumbles that GM Mellon and the Titans may be interested in moving up in the draft.
